This fandom can be so toxic sometimes. Can't express a simple opinion without people immediately making a million bad faith assumptions about you. I'm not an idiot. I know he's not responsible for Byler being queerbait, and I'm not mad that he changed his mind about the ship. I actually agree with everything he said about Mike and Will's relationship. I love Byler, but canonically, Mike and Will's friendship is very dysfunctional. I just find the sudden switch-up disheartening, because he was one of the only people from the show who was ever willing to positively acknowledge the ship. Maybe my last post was a little hyperbolic, but this is Tumblr.com. Most fandom posts on here are hyperbolic.

Giving El an E.T.-style ending doesn't work for several reasons (like the fact that she's a human girl, not a fucking alien), but the main one is that E.T.'s ending is bittersweet, not tragic. It's sad that he can't stay on Earth with Elliott, but he's not dying or doomed to spend the rest of his life alone. He's going home to be with his family. We know he's going to be okay.

Even if El miraculously survived, she could never return to the people she loves, and she's completely alone. In Mike's vision of her future, there's no indication she's found new friends or family. It's just El, isolated from everyone and everything she cares about.

E.T. loses Elliott, but gets to go home; El loses her loved ones and her home, and is left with nothing but those fucking waterfalls her middle school boyfriend dreamed up for her.

I think the Kerouac parallel between Jesse Walsh and Mike Wheeler is particularly damning evidence against the Duffers' repeated insistence that their character was never intentionally queer-coded, especially given all the other parallels between Stranger Things and Freddy's Revenge. Somebody on that set knew exactly what they were doing.

Also, openly gay author Truman Capote sharply criticized the writing of Jack Kerouac and other Beat writers, arguing that their stream-of-consciousness style relied too much on spontaneity and not enough on editing or craftsmanship. He famously quipped their work was "not writing, it's typing".

Mike was never my favorite character, but I always felt like he had the potential to be far more compelling than the Duffers allowed him to be. Even setting Byler aside, there were a million different directions they could've taken him in. Instead, they left him largely stagnant for most of the series. Even Mr. Clarke had more of an arc than he did. I think that's what frustrates me most about the show: it had the potential to be great, but the Duffers either didn't realize what they had or just didn't care enough to do their own story and characters justice.

Even if CG ultimately leads somewhere meaningful, I’ll never forgive the Duffers for using such a harmful marketing strategy. Mocking fans and giving bullies more ammunition is not acceptable.

Having 70% of the fandom turn against you is not a success, even if there’s a bigger plan behind it. People won’t simply forget everything that happened over the past year. Good marketing should build excitement and engagement, not alienate a large portion of the audience while catering to only a tiny fraction of the fandom.

What frustrates me most is that they created an environment where people felt comfortable openly ridiculing and attacking us. That’s what I resent the most.

The thing is, it really didn't have to be Mike. It could've been Carlton, or Chance, or even fucking Mikhail, but the Duffers chose Mike. They could've given him another love interest, or at least shown him expressing interest in other boys, but instead they chose to center his entire sexuality arc around his feelings for Mike and only Mike.

I love Byler, but I could've gotten on board with another love interest for Will if they'd made an effort to write one for him. They had several seasons to do so. They could've written a flirty interaction between him and another boy in Lenora. They could've subverted our expectations and revealed that the painting was actually for someone else he had a crush on. They could've made the bar scene with Carlton longer so we could finally see the "snowballs" and "avalanches" conversation pay off. But they didn't do any of that. They dragged out his feelings for Mike until the penultimate episode, stunting his character development, and then had the nerve to claim they didn't give him another love interest because they wanted his journey to be "more internal and about himself."

Still, I might've been okay with this half-assed self-acceptance angle if they hadn't also established that Will wants romantic love. No, I don't think anyone needs sex or romance to be happy, and as poorly written as his coming-out arc is, I am glad he learned to love and accept himself before he started dating anyone. But we are repeatedly shown how self-sacrificing Will is, and one of the few selfish desires he has is to be loved romantically. Not only is it cruel to deny him this after all the horrible shit he's endured, it's also bad writing to establish this as one of his central desires then fail to meaningfully resolve that aspect of his character arc. If they were really so determined not to give him a love interest, they could've at least used the vision Vecna gave him about his future to explain the sudden change in his feelings for Mike. But in typical Duffer fashion, "it happened off-screen."

It didn't have to be Mike, but Mike is what they gave us. So every time the Duffers try to play dumb and act like Bylers were delusional for thinking Mike and Will might end up together, I start throwing imaginary tomatoes at them, because they're responsible for all of this. Even if Byler was "never in the cards", they still should've addressed the ship once they realized how popular it had become. Mike and Will barely interact in season 5; telling us Byler wasn't going to happen wouldn't have spoiled anything. Instead, they leaned into it, both in the story and in the marketing, because as the "loudest" subsection of the fandom, they knew we'd give them the most money and attention.

And I don't expect them to ever take accountability for any of this, but I really wish they'd stop trying to rewrite their own narrative by scapegoating us.

Exactly, I would have been fine with byler not being canon, if they had made a little effort to give these two some kind of closure. Will didn't have a storyline of his own for the last three seasons, he just suffered from his unrequited love. By the end of season 4, it seemed like this had been resolved, Will finally gave up on Mike and realized he didn't stand a chance, when suddenly in season 5 they gave him hope only to break his heart once again.

I would have even accepted all that Tammy nonsense if Will's revelation hadn't happened off-screen over the course of a day, and if they had actually shown that he had moved on. Instead, what happened was that Will once again buried his feelings for Mike and El's sake, not to be a burden to them. It's obvious that he hasn't moved on at all in the finale, and he continues to suffer in silence. What was the point of all this?

I get that it's supposed to be an homage to Little Shop of Horrors and It, but they gave it a fleshier, less exoskeletal look than Pennywise's spider form, and made it vertical instead of horizontal like Audrey II, with more pronounced "lobes".💀

If conformitygate is real, it might be a movie. During WSQK's New Year's Eve broadcast, Robin mentioned something about possibly returning for a movie, which could've been referring to the finale screening in theaters, but despite its length and release format, it's still an episode, not an actual movie. And I'm pretty sure everyone who's been asked about conformitygate has only ever denied the existence of another season, not a film.
