āDo you know where Hotch is?ā
You caught sight of Emily as you passed through the bullpen, nearly tripping over your own hurried steps in your search for him.Ā
āYeah, he just headed into Agent Jamisonās office.ā She answered, gesturing in the general direction. āAround five minutes ago. Third door on the left.ā
Flashing her a grateful smile, āYouāre the best, thank you.ā
With your file held close to your chest, you hurried across the precinct, heading down a small hallway as you exchanged brief acknowledgments and weaved through the different agents on the way.Ā
You'd just finished an interview with the most recent victimās significant other, who casually dropped a detail that could break the case wide open. It wasnāt uncommon for key information to come out that way: unintentional, but invaluable. And it was definitely the kind of information Hotch had to be given right away.Ā
As you reached the barely ajar door, you could hear Aaronās elevated voice coming from the inside. That, along with the tension radiating from the room, caused you to stop in your tracks. Remaining strictly out of sight, you listened in.
ā-youāre also outranked by every member of my team.ā Aaron stated firmly, his tone steady and unwavering.
This was clearly a private conversation, one you had no right to eavesdrop on, and your findings could certainly wait until he was finished. They were just findings, after all, not another murder. But you couldnāt bring yourself away - your heels stayed firmly where they were, as if they had been miraculously glued to the laminate flooring.
She scoffed, clearly offended by the notion that she was in any way subordinate, āwhat is that supposed to mean?ā
āAn agent using a case as a stepping stone for their own personal gain can be the thing to compromise the case, and deny justice to who actually matters: the victims.ā Aaron snapped, his voice shifting to one of anger. You could easily picture the hardened expression that had to be on his face; his eyebrows drawn in a furious line, jaw detrimentally clenched as his cold glare dared her to rebuttal.
Heat erupted through your body, rushing up your spine and spreading beneath your skin.
Youād heard Aaron raise his voice before. Numerous times, at that. In elevated situations, at incompetent officers, at those who questioned his command or overstepped a line. But this was different, and it had a shocking, yet extremely welcomed effect on your body - it left you with a gentle yet satisfied hum. Addictive almost, you wanted - needed to hear more.Ā
Not that you were surprised by the fact that he was having such an effect on your body to begin with; it wasnāt the first time something similar had happened, it was standard territory when it came to having a crush. But this was different. Aaron had never sounded more attractive than he did right now.
āEverybody remembers the killer. Not the victims. An agent whoās more interested in selling good copy than they are in doing their actual job is exactly what the Bureau does not need more of. If thatās where youāre concerned, I suggest you start looking into a career as a tabloid journalist. Otherwise, you do the work the Bureau hired you to do.ā His inflection was sharp, āDo you understand?
Your heart thumped wildly, his authority so profound goosebumps trickled across your arms. He wasn't showing her any mercy.
āWhat are you doing?ā
Behind you, Daveās voice came out of nowhere - causing you to nearly jump and jolt back to reality. His lips curled into a barely contained smirk, eyes glinting with amusement as he took in your reaction.Ā
How long had he been standing here? Or, how long had he known youād been standing here?Ā
āRossi, I was just,ā you stammered, your cheeks flushing more profusely by the second. You swallowed, scrambling to organize your thoughts before they came out of your mouth, āI was just, I have a thing for Hotch. No, I mean, the victimās partner-ā
āI hear you, cāmon,ā his hand found your shoulder, gently guiding you away in mortified silence. You had your suspicions that Dave had an idea about your crush, and you couldnāt be grateful enough that he didnāt say anything about it. āHeāll be all yours in a moment.ā
