For anyone who doesn't know what's going on in Canada right now (which, let's be real, is probably everyone who's not in Canada):

This week, a mass grave was discovered at a former Indian Residential School, in Kamloops, BC. The grave contained the bodies of 215 Indigenous children.

For people outside of North America, residential schools were places that Indigenous children were sent to, to have their language and culture stripped away from them. They were literally stolen from their families, and scattered across Canada, to ensure that they would be surrounded by children who didn't speak their language. They were given Christian names and forced to speak English. They were horrendously abused, and the survivors have been traumatized.

Hundreds of children never returned. The assumption has always been that they died. This has now been confirmed.

The school in Kamloops closed in 1978. They are now trying to identify bodies to inform family members. The last residential school closed in the 1990s. There is growing demand to search all of them, but the government hasn't responded to that, as of yet. Ottawa JUST gave in to pressure to fly the Canada flag at half mast. They weren't even going to do that.

This is the reality if anti-Indigenous racism in Canada. The residential schools may be closed, but that hasn't stopped the abduction of Indigenous children, let alone the hundreds of missing and murdered Indigenous women.

one day some of you will actually go outside and go to pride and you’re going to meet old black queens who refers to themselves as femme, you’ll meet people from small towns who still use the word transsexual, you’ll see that your local activist organization set up a stall about your local LGBT history that includes leather bar’s history, you’ll see lesbians in groups refer to themselves as “guys” and “boys”, you’ll see someone with breasts and pasties and little else have “he / him” painted on his chest, and you’ll be so caught up with your terminally online attitude that instead of appreciating the wide diversity of people who exist in the LGBT community who are brave enough to share themselves you’ll just be formulating posts and tweets in your head for when get home about how “problematic” it all was and it’s honestly tragic

these people are unarmed and defenseless. these people are PRAYING. the last ten days of Ramadan, especially tonight, is the holiest time of the entire year for Muslims.

this is not the first time israel committed a horrible attack like this and it won't be the last. for example, as we speak, people are being forced out of their homes in Sheikh Jarrah.

please don't let yourself get desensitized to what's happening in Palestine and speak up about this issue whenever you can

For those unaware, israeli occupying forces are using white phosphorus, a substance banned by the Geneva Convention for it’s deadly effects, against the people of Palestine.

They are bombing residential homes under the claim that they are aiming for Hamas’ weapon stash in said buildings. An entire residential complex was bombed and toppled over earlier. The casualties are horrific.

Adding on, the people in Gaza cannot survive this. There are limited spaces in hospitals, the water is mostly undrinkable, they’re barley getting enough electricity in the day, etc.. They were attacked heavily before and they have yet to recover.

However, I understand this is all distressing and very overwhelming, so I am going to add a lighthearted tweet translating how the Palestinians are fighting back in the streets. May it serve as a reminder that many things in this world can be broken, but the Palestinian spirit is not one of them.

This is not a matter of sides when one has broken international law and has crossed the Geneva Convention, while the other is being shamed for using rocks against soldiers and firing back for the deadly massacre going on as I type this.

Do not burn yourselves out defending Palestine. However, remember to not stop defending.
