Can't Wait To Watch The Red Sox Beat Up On College Kids

Saturday, March 3 - the Boston Red Sox kick off the Spring Training schedule with back-to-back games against Northeastern and Boston College in Fort Myers, Florida. Nothing inflates a fan's confidence more than watching pro ballplayers stick it to snot nosed, aluminum bat swinging college kids. Jokes aside, these games are great because we finally get to see the type of team that will be on the field at Fenway Park in just over a month. Baseball season has officially arrived, folks. I can smell the Fenway Franks already.

Rush Limbaugh Slut Comment Best Thing That Could Ever Happen To Sandra Fluke?

YAHOO - In a show of moral support, President Barack Obama called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke on Friday defending her in the face of conservative radio icon Rush Limbaugh's "reprehensible ... personal and crude" attacks on her, the White House said.

WTF Is Wrong With The Bruins?

The Bruins were shut out for the 5th time in the month of February on Tuesday night - this time against the Ottawa Senators. I had been blaming their recent struggles on Tim Thomas since the team has been terrible ever since his White House stunt - but the fact that they're being shut out suggests the problem may be on offense. Even if your goalie plays great (which Thomas did on Tuesday) you can't win the game if you don't score any goals. The B's definitely miss Nathan Horton and Rich Peverley - two skilled scorers - but that's no excuse. Boston has have plenty of talented guys up front that can put the puck in the net. So, I'm going to chalk this up as an inevitable slump. The Bruins went on a tear for 2 months in which they were absolutely unbeatable, so perhaps they got worn out and have cooled down as a result. If the B's are going to be a hot-and-cold type of team, I only hope they find  the hot button when Stanley Cup playoff time comes around.

Tek To Hang 'Em Up

MLB.com - Jason Varitek, long defined by his leadership and toughness, is expected to announce his retirement on Thursday, making him that rare player in this era who spent his entire career with one team.

Much like Wakefield's stepping down, I see this as a sad but necessary move. Varitek had a hell of career here in Boston and you really can't ask for much more out of the guy from a playing standpoint - Tek is just a victim of time. All signs point to the Captain staying with the team in some way shape or form. Who knows? Varitek might contribute more as a coach/mentor than he did as a player for the past several years.

Bruins Beef Up At Deadline (Sorta)

NESN - The B's have acquired Brian Rolston. The Islander will call Boston home for the second time in his career, as he spent 2000-04 in the Hub. Rolston has four goals and nine helpers to go with a minus-12 in 40 games this year...The B's have also landed Mike Mottau in the Rolston deal, according to reports. Mottau, a Quincy native and former Boston College standout (and Hobey Baker Award winner), has played just 49 total games over the last two seasons between the Rangers and Isles. The B's also picked up defenseman Greg Zanon...for Steve Kampfer

Not the most exciting moves made by the B's - or anyone else in the League for that matter. The NHL trade deadline is historically the most active in sports but 2012 brought very few noteworthy trades. If you're still intrigued, you can see them all here

Awww...Poor Kobe Got His Nose Broke'd

Kobe Bryant fractured his nose & suffered a mild concussion during Sunday's NBA All-Star game in an incident that can only be attributed to the Basketball Gods striking him down after absurd comments about being the 2nd best player of all time behind  Wilt Chamberlain (video below). Sent To Jail For Siz-urp (No, Not That Kind)

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A Rhode Island man has pleaded guilty in Vermont federal court to selling mislabeled maple syrup.

Fifty-year-old Bernard Coleman of West Warwick, R.I., said he initially sold pure maple syrup over the Internet. But when the price of syrup increased, he decided to make his own out of water, sugar and maple flavoring. He said he made the syrup in his home and sold it since 2009. A couple who bought about $220 worth of syrup from him doubted that it was authentic and had it tested by the state Department of Agriculture Consumer Protection. It was determined to be made from cane sugar.

Coleman pleaded guilty Thursday to introducing adulterated food into interstate commerce with the intent to defraud or mislead. He faces up to three years in prison.

I've heard of people going to jail for syrup but it's usually infused with codeine and makes "screwed and chopped" rap songs sound normal.

The Bruins Big Move

ESPN - Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli has changed course and is trying to add an impact player before Monday’s NHL trade deadline, league sources not directly tied to the negotiations told ESPNBoston.com.

The shift in emphasis is a result of injuries to key forwards -- Nathan Horton (concussion) and Rich Peverley (knee) -- and the team’s overall lackluster play since the beginning of January (Wednesday night’s win notwithstanding), the sources indicated.

  Adding a scorer like Rick Nash, Ales Hemsky or Milan Hejduk could ignite a Bruins team that has been playing relatively flat ever since Tim Thomas started acting like Che Guevara. Look for Chiarelli, a master of mid-season pickups, to make a move before Monday. The main obstacle is making sense of the dollars and cents. Nash could be pricey, making a short term deal for a veteran like Hejduk a more realistic outcome. Even the the Bruins stand pat I believe this team has the firepower to make another run at the Cup as long as TT and Tuukka Rask are in top form come tournament time.

Rajon Rondo has long been known as a hot-head, but his most recent stunt was unlike anything I've seen in recent memory. Dude, we all know he should have called a foul but you can't huck the ball at the ref. That's something I'd expect to see from a AAU game in the hood, not the NBA - then again maybe the NBA is just a bunch of AAU players from the hood that are a few years older now

Vancouver Riot Dickhead Going To Jail

NESN - Sentencing was handed down to the first man convicted of participating in the riots in downtown Vancouver after the Stanley Cup Finals last June. Ryan Dickinson was given 17-months in prison after it was discovered that the 20-year-old man was seen throwing a newspaper box at two police cars and through a store window...Pleading guilty to one count of participating in the riot and another for violating a court ordered curfew, Dickinson claims he was "caught up in the moment," after the Vancouver Canucks lost to the Boston Bruins in Game 7.

I can't believe his "caught up in the moment" defense didn't work! That's what happens when you do stupid shit in the age of 1080p camera phones. Check out this high quality photograph of Mr. Dickinson committing the deed.

Still, almost a year & a half in jail for rioting is pretty harsh. When I was in College we used to riot all the time and the worst punishment you would getting your head bashed in by the cops and maybe expelled from school. We never did anything as dumb as these Vancouver morons, though. What a bunch of idiots. Can't wait to see more of them get sent to jail as the court cases get processed.

RIP Knuckleball

Tim Wakefield retiring is probably the best thing that could have happened for the Red Sox. The Sox simply didn't have a spot for Wake this year, so it may be best for him to ride off into the sunset now. The biggest downside of Wakefield's retirement is the fact that we may never see a great knuckleballer again. I am going to miss watching guys get humiliated by the dancing knuckler.

Are You Sick Of Jeremy Lin?

I can't tell whether I love or hate the Jeremy Lin fever. It's a great story but I would like to be able to turn on my TV and go 5 minutes without hearing some stupid word or phrase that cleverly incorporates his last name

LINSANITY, LINSPIRATIONAL - GET IT? HIS NAME IS LIN IT'S ONLY ONE SYLLABLE AND IT FITS REALLY WELL INTO EXISTING WORDS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE - SO COOL!

I am also torn because he went to Harvard so I want to like him but he plays for the New York Knicks which makes me automatically inclined to root against him. And the recent NESN article comparing Lin to Tom Brady made me puke in my mouth a little bit - let's all relax here, he's won a few regular season games, call me when he wins a Championship.
