   META 02 -  LOGAN & HIS BEHAVIOUR IN THE PARK.

I am going to preface this by saying that this meta is not me excusing away any of Logan’s behaviour when he was in the park. I am not excusing his hedonistic, sadistic actions or ways of looking at things.

When we first see Logan in the park, he is with William and it is plainly obvious that Logan is in his element here. He stabs a local host in the hand, has threesomes and orgies, drinks, etc. I do believe that he is functioning on the understanding that the hosts aren’t human. He knows they’re not “human”, that their memories will be wiped and everything over the following day. He doesn’t see the hosts as people and with the knowledge that he is immortal, it gives him a kind of fearlessness that he doesn’t have in day to day life.

Logan lashes out in Westworld because he can control how things end. If he gets shot, he won’t die. If they get shot? They die. It’s temporary, they’ll be back the next day like nothing happened and he can go through it all over again. He enjoys the storylines, he enjoys living them like he was there in the moment and like he can finally feel powerful. In real life, Logan feels anything but. Westworld is his playground and anything is fair game. He would not act the same way he does within it out in the real world. He has responsibilities. He has a life. Bills to pay.

In Westworld, Logan thrives off of the host’s fear because of how scared he feels in his own life. If he can pretend for one little moment, that he is powerful, then he will.

He will murder.

He will fuck.

He will fight.

He will be powerful.

  META 01 - LOGAN’S ADDICTION, DEATH AND RELATIONSHIP WITH JAMES DELOS.

Alright, I was going to leave this little piece of meta until I’d done a rewatch and taken notes regarding Logan and his behaviour, but since I can’t stop thinking about the little snippet of conversation quoted below... I guess it’s coming early.

“Remember when you taught me how to hold my breath underwater? Threw me in, wouldn’t let me back out until I touched the bottom?” “My father taught me to swim the same way I taught you to swim, and I didn’t end up a fucking junkie, did I? If this is about money, let’s skip past the memory lane crap. You’re not fucking getting any. Get clean. Come back and we can talk.” “I got clean. I came back and I asked you for your help. And what did you tell me?” “I told you it wouldn’t last. And it didn’t, did it? I’ll tell the staff to give you five minutes to get out.” “Dad? Dad, I’m all the way down now. I can see the bottom. Don’t you wanna see what I see?”

 The above quote is noted to have been a defining part of James Delos’ life - the last time he ever spoke to Logan before he overdosed. The first thing that stood out to me was the fact that James thought it was perfectly okay to hold a child underwater until his feet touched the bottom, and likely he only let him up for air - if that’s something that stood out, the chances that there were more case of abuse (that’s what this is and you can’t tell me otherwise lmfao) that weren’t mentioned in the show, but I believe most of those were verbal above physical.

  “I got clean. I came back I asked you for your help. And what did you tell me?”   “I told you it wouldn’t last. And it didn’t, did it?”

The first time Logan got clean, the first thing he did was go to his dad-- someone who should have helped him after he had taken the hardest first steps in improving himself-- for help. He didn’t want money. He didn’t want coddled, or fussed over. He wanted his dad to approve and to put a hand on his shoulder and go, “Hey, Logan? You did good. You did a good job. You’re clean.” He was met with scepticism -- it wouldn’t last, would it? I think it was a few days after that that Logan just thought, what’s the point in getting clean? Had Logan had some support from the one person he needed it from, I imagine that he would have been able to stay clean. 

But the next time he was offered a hit, he just thought - there’s no point, everyone sees me as a junkie anyway, and that will never change. 

“Dad? Dad, I’m all the way down now. I can see the bottom. Don’t you wanna see what I see?”

This was the last time Logan asked for help. He knew he was hitting rock bottom, and he knew, deep in his heart of hearts that James would turn him away. The man had never shown him an ounce of love in all of his years alive (I just think James Delos was the kind of person who struggled to show love in a conventional way - after all, we can only assume he took after his own father who, James admits within the boundaries of the swimming lessons, did the exact same thing). I think a big part of it was James thinking, tough love made me strong and not realising from the start that it wasn’t working for Logan.

Children who have suffered from abuse from parental figures often try to please said parental figure, they often seek to please said parent in any way they can. The first time he got clean, he was looking for that little bit of pride in his eyes that he craved. He came to his dad as a last ditch effort to explain that he needed help, and the moment he turned his back on him... he was slamming the last nail in the coffin of Logan Delos. The next few months he spend in a stupor, never sober and never with an empty bed. 

I believe, with the deterioration of Logan’s mental health, that his death was no accident. I think everything got so on top of him that he felt like dying was the only way to cope with it. Getting high wasn’t doing anything to stifle his misery any more. It just made him angry, make his self-loathing that much worse... that it felt like dying was the only way to escape it all.

   There wasn’t much that interested him nowadays. A near-death experience tends to do that to a man, makes him obsessed with routine -- he wakes up at the same time every morning. Takes a shit at the same time every morning. A shower. A walk. Then he returns back to his apartment to watch TV until he grows bored and takes a nap. Little disruptions were rarely welcome, but in Emily’s case, he was always happy to see her. In his eyes, she would be the only good thing Billy’s ever done in his goddamned life. The park destroyed the man, Juliet would say sometimes, turned him into something awful. That’s not the case, what the park had done for Billy was bring out the worst in him and put his true colours on display for all to see.

   Little Billy went in there as he was and came out a man who was neither white nor black in morality, but varying shades of grey. “Oh yeah?” He doesn’t mean for it to sound as bitter as it does, but the company should have been given to one of James Delos’ kids - not some random pulled in by marriage. The fact that he had been given everything, even after everything he had done, everything he continues to do, never ceases to amaze him. It boils him from the inside out and if it continues much longer he is certain that everything inside of him will be cooked through.

    “--- Pretty sure that’s gonna be hard to do, considering he’s playin’ them all like a fiddle.” Logan can hear Juliet chiding him in his head, tsking at him for slagging off her father. Hypocritical, really, when he’s heard her say much worse things when she’s too deep in the cups to control her own mouth.

 Funny how that works. “Honestly, Em, I’m all ears.”

It was a good place to be, really, to get all of that restless energy caused by built up stress out of their system and Logan’s vouched enough for the park to his dad about additional funding. Logan all but laughs in her face.

 “What? You think this is real? They aren’t even people. You can shoot them all right between the eyes and the next day they’ll be here like nothing ever happened. No mark, no bruises - this ain’t war. It is, however,” he takes a sip of his whiskey and smacks his lips. “A damned fine way of blowing off some steam. Stop worrying, get stuck in and have the time of your life; they’re not gonna remember you, ‘n if you make a mistake? It’ll all start over with the next reset.”
