Katniss Everdeen x female!covey!reader
Just read âsunrise on the reapingâ and it send me down a spiral.
!Mention of sunrise on the reaping if you squint!
but no real spoiler, only if you know you know :)
The air was cold. Colder than it shouldâve been around this time a year.
But I guess weâll have to thank the reaping for that.
Every year on this day exact, the air grows colder becomes sharper and more icy. Like nature reacting to the utter evil that the Capitol brings.
Like it could feel the Capitol lurking in the shadows, enclosing on our districts like an animal hunting its prey.
And on these days nothing could possibly make me feel better. Not my music, not my family, not even my flowers.
But maybe, just maybe seeing my girlfriend could slightly brighten my day.
On the outskirts of the forest I pause just to catch a glimpse of the meadow behind me. How peaceful everything seems here. Like nothing could ever destroy the calm of the meadow grass blowing softly in the wind. Oh how I longed to be part of that grass.
The woods before me were familiar in a way a loved one is. Every time I walked the familiar path between the trees it felt like visiting an old friend, an ancient one whose wisdom and sheer endless storyâs still surprised you even after years of knowing each other.
The path led me deeper and deeper into the forest till I finally came to the clearing that me and my girlfriend would spend most of our afternoons together. Hidden and protected by the green trees and giant rocks.
Leave it to Katniss to find spots like this.
I guess with her hunting skills sheâs bound to know the woods like her own house. Even tough the walk here was always more a of a hike than an afternoon stroll I wouldnât trade it for all the gold in the world.
This was ours. Something that belonged to no one but us.
And I was thankful for it.
The sun reflected on the water in the little stream at the center of the clearing. The trees borrowed their shadow and the grass was greener than anywhere else in the woods. Or maybe it wasnât and my head made it special cause my heart told him to.
âTook you long enough.â Katniss voice comes from behind a tree. My head shoots up just to see her slowly walking out behind it.
âMy apologies your highness. The walk is always rather challenging you see.â I smirk at her. Waiting for her next move.
I love us. Our conversations. Our talk. Our humor. Us.
She understood me effortlessly. Got my jokes, my sarcasm. Got me.
âWell maybe if you started coming on hunts with me instead of singing all day youâd be in better shape.â she walks forward until she stands right in front of me.
I wrap my arms around her neck and play with the hairs that came undone from her braid.
âMaybe I should consider that.â
Her mouth is on mine before I can say anything else. Her soft lips melt perfectly with mine, our tongues dancing in a way that just ours can. She leads, I follow.
I wind my hands around her neck to bring her closer to me. Her hands find my waist, her grip tightening as if Iâd disappear any second. Itâs like two magnets finding each other, not having the power to separate on their own.
But I know Katniss. Maybe even better than myself. I know why her grip tightened. Why we meet here in the morning and not as we usual do in the afternoon.
Because today one of us could disappear. Forever.
With almost a guarantee of no return.
We break apart. Our breaths heavy, staring into each others eyes.
Shes not good with words but she doesnât need to be. Her eyes speak volumes. Her beautiful grey eyes that look more troubled than ever.
âI donât want to lose youâ she whispers so softly I wouldnât have caught it if it wasnât for our closeness.
My hands unwind from behind her neck, caressing her face with soft touches. âI donât want to loose you eitherâ.
Her eyes close for a moment and her face relaxes as if to savors the moment, trying to burn it in her brain forever.
Branding every little detail about her in my brain. Someday Iâll write a song about her.
As she opens her eyes she smiles at my concentrated face.
âMaybe you should take a picture, itâll last longer.â
I smirk. Maybe I should. I could do with a few pictures of her on my wall.
âMh not really Covey style. But I could put you into a song.â my cheeks hurt from smiling so big. God knows how long I wanted to do that for.
âA song sounds kinda serious. You know once you write it youâll always have a reminder of me, even if you one day decide you donât want it anymore.â she tells me slightly more serious than before. As if she was afraid Iâd run away any second.
âNah you know, one of my relatives once said âlike the geese I mate for lifeâ and I believe I fall under the same category.â I smile at her reassuringly before I turn around to drag her to the small grey stone on the other side of the little stream with me.
There in the middle is a âKâ carved into the stone, right next to an âEâ.
âSee? Youâre kinda stuck with me forever Everdeenâ she looks at me and smiles softly. Itâs a real smile, a rare one. And I feel lucky to be allowed to see it, hell to be the cause of it makes thousands of butterflies go of in my stomach.
âNothing bad will happen to us. We got this far without being reaped. We can get through it two more times.â our fingers interlock and her head leans on my shoulder.
If I could freeze this moment I would. Nothing has ever felt more peaceful.
And I know weâll be ok.
