Today would've been the official date of this years Bowie's Beckenham Oddity Festival , but Covid-19 struck and the council cancelled all events in the park for this year. We will now be back in August 2021, stay tuned for announcements, ticket links etc. Thank you to everyone that has supported, donated and attended the festival, without you all there wouldn't be an event! Just to let you lovely folks know that we've been given the green light again to open the gates at the Bowie Bandstand for anyone wishing to pay their respects to Bowie on his birthday or the anniversary. We'll be at the bandstand from 8th -11th January (between 10.30am - 3.30pm during those dates). Anyone wishing to visit, sign the remembrance book or leave flowers etc, please make a note of the dates and times. For those of you that don't know where the Bowie Bandstand is situated, it's in Croydon Road Recreation Ground, Beckenham, Kent, BR3 3PR. 'Arts Lab' "I run an arts lab which is my chief occupation. It's in Beckenham and I think it's the best in the country. There isn't one pseud involved. All the people are real - like labourers or bank clerks. It started out as a folk club, arts labs generally have such a bad reputation as pseud places. "There's a lot of talent in the green belt and there is a load of tripe in Drury Lane. I think the arts lab movement is extremely important and should take over from the youth club concept as a social service. "The people who come are completely pacifist and we get a lot of cooperation from the police in our area. They are more than helpful. "Respect breeds respect. We've got a few greasers who come and a few skinheads who are just as enthusiastic. "We started our lab a few months ago with poets and artists who just came along. It's got bigger and bigger and now we have our own light show and sculptures, et cetera. And I never knew there were so many sitar players in Beckenham"..... David Bowie, September 1969. *The return of the Big Red Bus....for the fourth year!* ⭕⚡★⭕⚡★⭕⚡★ Bowie's Beckenham Oddity are pleased to announce the return of the Bowie Bus. It will take festival goers from Beckenham Junction train station to Croydon Road recreation Ground as well as take them back to the station after the event. The bus will be running a shuttle sevice leaving Beckenham Junction station every fifteen minutes to the Bowie's Beckenham Oddity event. This will start from 11.00 am on the Saturday morning of the event( 17th august). A special thank you to my good friend Jason Mee for not only the use of the bus for the event (as he has done in previous years) but for his support for the festival. Jason you're a star and I bless you madly! xxx The bus will run from Beckenham Junction Station from 11am till 1pm every 15 mins. David Bowie talking about the song 'Life On Mars'.... This song was so easy. Being young was easy. A really beautiful day in the park, sitting on the steps of the bandstand. 'Sailors bap-bap-bap-bap-baaa-bap.' An anomic (not a 'gnomic') heroine. Middle-class ecstasy. I took a walk to Beckenham High Street to catch a bus to Lewisham to buy shoes and shirts but couldn't get the riff out of my head. Jumped off two stops into the ride and more or less loped back to the house up on Southend Road. Workspace was a big empty room with a chaise longue; a bargain-price art nouveau screen ('William Morris,' so I told anyone who asked); a huge overflowing freestanding ashtray and a grand piano. Little else. I started working it out on the piano and had the whole lyric and melody finished by late afternoon. Nice.
