his mother told him he’d be fine. she’d said he’d eventually get over what happened to him and he’d be able to move on, but the thing was, she only saw him once a month. she didn’t know what he went through when he was alone. she wasn’t there for the nightmares that led to him locking himself in his closet for hours, the paranoid too strong for him to get any sleep at all.
when he was locked in that closet, he’d try all kinds of things to comfort himself ; the only successful one being to think about Dr. Reid. that nice man had saved him, he’d made the bad men go away. so, surely that meant it’d work on everything else Wyatt feared, right?
after Wyatt had been released from care ( with the assurances that he would be okay, physically, and that it’d just take TIME. ) he’d watched all the interviews and news segments about his case. he’d seen Dr. Reid’s team on the tv. they called themselves the BAU. after that, it hadn’t taken long to figure out exactly where the building was.
he hadn’t planned on actually going there, he really didn’t, but some things change.
he’d woken up after another long night of tossing and turning, throat tight with emotions he wasn’t quite ready to release. he’d rolled himself out of bed, exhausted with the lack of comfortable sleep. dark circles were under his eyes, lips in a seemingly permanent frown, and he stared at his closet for a long time. he’s been trying to trick himself into believing he didn’t need the closet, that going in there was only going to enable him and he’d never get better.
it got harder and harder as days passed and that’s why he’d finally decided to go find his hero.
it had taken hours to get there, which was much longer than it needed to be. it had taken everything in him to convince himself the cab driver wasn’t going to hurt him and that he was his only shot at seeing Dr. Reid.
once he was inside the building, Wyatt kept his head low and refused to look anyone in the eye, even when he asked for directions. he could feel everyone’s curious looks, but they only made him speed up. not looking up in a building full of people is certainly not the best idea, especially when that results in Wyatt running right into someone.
he gasped softly and looked up to meet the man’s hard look. eyes widen as he stumbles back a few steps, the commotion seeming to catch the attention of a few others agents who notice the unmasked fear in his eyes.
❝ reid — I-I just want dr. reid... ❞

pretty friend.
Wyatt is very pink and Carly wants to ask if he’s okay, but mostly she just wants to GRAB HIM. She wont, and she’s not really sure what she’d do with him if she did, but she figures it’d be something along the lines of kissing him all over his sweet baby animal face. He is just the kind of person you look at and, within the first five minutes of meeting them, blurt out I LOVE YOU— and that is not Carly’s fault, that’s on him. She blinks when he invites her in, because she was NOT expecting that, and she was also distracted by his freckles.
❝ Oh my god, YEAH, I would. THANK YOU. People don’t let me in their apartments anymore, you know, because when I was like ten I tried to steal an octopus preserved in a jar from Herb down the hall. But, like, come on. What ten year old wouldn’t try to steal an OCTOPUS that is PRESERVED in a JAR?❞
She likes the way he talks. She likes how when he’s NOT talking it gives her free reign to babble, but when he IS talking she actually stops and wants to hear what he’s trying to work out ( when, typically, she just listens to other people talk in order to find a pause and interject ).
❝ Yeah, I like The Price is Right. When Drew Carey became the host it changed my life. Bob was cool but he’s so tiny and old I was always afraid he was going to literally DIE on screen. Who needs that kind of stress from their game shows, you know?❞
She squeezes past Wyatt’s cute little body to gain access to his apartment before he changes his mind, but FREEZES at the compliment because— holy shit. She has never been so happy to have a nose.
❝ Are you kidding me? Look at you! You’re so cute I want to hang myself in my closet by a BELT. It’s ridiculous. I just wanna — ❞
Carly holds her hands out in Wyatt’s direction and scrunches her fingers at him. ( SQUEEZE YOU. Those are the words she’s looking for. ) She looks around his little apartment, because she’s NOSY and wants to know if they have the same carpet and kitchen tiles, before throwing herself down in front of the television set. She stretches her legs across the couch, but makes sure her feet hang off the edge because she’s not a hoodlum, and leaves enough room for Wyatt at the end.
❝ Just let me know when you’re ready to order— don’t feel rushed. Menus from new places are scary. Like, what does anything MEAN, y’know?❞
Wyatt doesn’t remember much from his childhood anymore, but he’s not that sad about it, it’s not like it was picture perfect. Anyway, he’s sure that if he’d seen an octopus in a jar when he was that age, he’d definitely be curious enough to press his face against the glass to get a closer look, so he simply nods in agreement, because he really doesn’t know who WOULDN’T do that.
She’s funny, too, but not like she’s actually trying. He continues to be surprised by every word that comes out of her mouth. He’s never spoken to anyone like her, that’s definitely for sure. He likes it, enjoys her voice. He actually finds it to be soothing after hearing nothing but his mother’s voice, in person, for weeks. He’ll definitely be inviting Carly over more often, even if just to sit around and do nothing.
❝ the show is... loud — the lights are crazy, too. I-I - I’d prefer to just... stare at the sun. ❞
He tries to joke with her, tries to sound normal. He’s sure that’s what someone who slept in their own bed every night would say. But also he thinks that before the incident, he might’ve liked The Price Is Right. He probably enjoyed bright and loud shows like that. They excited his childlike mind, but now, it’s simply dulled.
When she returns the compliment, his cheeks get even redder and his heart even speeds up. She’s really cute, he wasn’t lying about that, but it’s more the fact that he hasn’t had much experience in this field. Though it’s not like he needs any, they’re just friends.
❝ wh — thank you, but, uh, please... don’t do that. ❞
Wyatt knows she’s joking ( at least he hopes she is ). Why on earth would anyone do that to themselves simply because someone else is cute? Her words still make him smile sweetly, though, as he pushes the door shut and slowly follows her. He even waits patiently for her to get comfortable before he sits down where her feet aren’t. He’s already enjoying their time together.
❝ — I’ll, uh, let you squeeze me... sometime then. ❞
The idea doesn’t sound terrible. He’s still not used to his mother’s touches, he sometimes even flinches, but he knows he’s going to have to get used to that again if he wants any chance of being OKAY again.
Besides... he trusts Carly already.
❝ I’m ready when y-you are, I guess. um, what’s... good ?? ❞
Carly !!
❝ Yeah? Well, thank YOU, I would have killed myself with all of these. Too much power, you know?❞
Carly takes it upon herself to press herself up against his door frame and poke her head into his apartment.
❝ You doing okay in here? Got everything you need? You know, if you want me to call the order in I can. You kind of have to yell at them for them to hear, and you don’t really look like you got a lot of yell in you. NO OFFENSE. They haven’t really gotten with the times with online orders and stuff. Speaking of that, if you want our wifi code it’s spinach20— no spaces, twenty not spelled out. Don’t give it out, statistically there are at least five people in this building who look at child porn. I’m Carly, by the way. I know your name, obviously. Again, no offence. You know my brain always confuses Wyatt with watt? Like electricity? Guess you’re ELECTRIC. Get it? Anyways.❞
She knows that she’s talking A LOT, but she’s talking FAST so she figures it cuts the word count in half— also, people tend to cut her off and he’s NOT doing that so she interprets it as permission to keep going. She pushes herself off the frame and looks at his face. He looks like a very sweet animal that she can’t really place and for a moment all she can do is SMILE at him. It’s very disconcerting. She turns her head and thankfully snaps out of it, but there is still that lingering warm n’ fuzzy feeling that’s like wiggling into a pair of sweatpants fresh out of the dryer and it makes her pull a face.
❝ Ugh. Weird. Anyway! You don’t actually have to get sweet and sour chicken, there’s a menu on the back. Pro tip, anything with beef — give it a pass. Don’t know what it is but I can tell you it AIN’T cow.❞
Wyatt doesn’t say a thing about her peeking into his apartment. So far, she hasn’t been rude to him so he doesn’t see a point in shutting her out. His therapist also says he should start trying to make friends again; try to be NORMAL again. So, why shouldn’t he try to be friends with the first real person that’s friendly towards him?
He’s about to speak, but then he catches her eye and she’s just... SMILING at him. It makes his cheeks heat up and he’s suddenly even more thankful for the lack of lights on in his apartment. He’s sure she’s not blind, his cheeks are pink, but he just hopes it’s not that noticeable. He’s had plenty people stare at him, it comes with his story and he knows that, but no one’s looked at him the way she just did. He prefers this kind of attention, that’s for sure.
❝ carly — do you want... to come in? You can c-come in.❞
She’s nice, sweet even, and he knows he’ll definitely need help calling in his order if what she said is true. He hasn’t raised his voice on PURPOSE since the incident. Sometimes he has nightmares, but sitting in his closet helps. It’s weird, he knows that, but it takes him back to after the men were done with him. Sure, he was usually bloody and covered in a mixture of cuts and bruises, but they were still done with him for the time being. He’d always be alone in that shed for a few hours, safe and alone.
❝ I have — The Price is Right is on — don’t know if you... like that or not.❞
He’s so bad at talking, he knows that. He can feel himself being awkward, but he can’t do anything about it but stare hopelessly at her, praying she’ll understand. He didn’t think he’d ever try to make friends with anyone, but here he is, and he’s already messing things up because he doesn’t know how to TALK to anyone anymore.
FRIENDS COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER.
❝ I like your um... nose — I MEAN, you’re very... pretty ? ❞

Does he get lonely in there? The 24 hour news boy, with his freckled tabloid face and adjacent apartment that is always quiet despite the fact that Carly can hear Mrs. Georgina’s watery sigh through the ceiling sometimes ( she lost her son in Afghanistan two years ago to a child strapped to an IED; there was barely anything left to place in the flag blanketed casket they shipped back home ).
Carly doesn’t exactly strive to MAKE FRIENDS— people make her feel shifty, but she does WORRY about the tenants in the complex more than she’d personally care to. ( That’s the problem with APARTMENTS, so many lives stacked on top of each other you can have a hard time telling where yours ends and where someone else’s begins. )
She doesn’t knock on his door until she has a GOOD EXCUSE.
❝ Hey, so, this delivery guy got REALLY SHITTY with me, you know? So I called his manager, who also got really shitty with me, so I sent like twenty emails to corporate saying all kinds of stuff, like the whole experience gave me an eating disorder and my hair was coming out in CLUMPS, resulting in my dad breaking his ten year sobriety streak and my parents getting a divorce— and, anyway, they ended up giving me these buy one get one free coupons, like a STACK of them, but my dad doesn’t really like Chinese food, and I would definitely eat it all but I don’t want to SHIT TO DEATH, and reheated rice is— you know, for communists. So I thought maybe I could unload some of this sweet and sour chicken onto you? It’s cool if you don’t want it, you have that whole west coast vibe going on so if you think meat is murder that’s totally your prerogative. ❞
Wyatt never expects his door to be knocked on. It always confuses him for a few seconds, because he has to force himself to realize that he’s not back in his shed and he’s as safe as he can be.
‘ THEY WON’T FIND YOU, LITTLE WYATT, ‘ his mother would often tell him.
She didn’t visit a lot - only to take him to his therapy sessions. The one’s everyone insisted would be good for him. He hadn’t had a choice in the matter. And every time his mother stepped into his apartment, that mouth of hers would immediately start listing off all the PROS of him moving in with her. He didn’t want that.
He just wanted to be alone, why couldn’t anyone understand that?
He loved his mother, but she wasn’t a good person either. She loved him, he knew that, but she loved attention more. That’s why she did nothing but coddle him when they were on the news together. She wanted to come off as the heartbroken mother she wasn’t. He didn’t care though, whatever kept her happy.
Another knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts and he slowly blinked over at the source of the noise. Right, there was someone to see him. He rose from his spot on the couch where he’d had The Price Is Right on at low volume. His therapist had insisted he watch BRIGHT shows, no matter how much he told her the light bothered him. He was doing alright so far, if you didn’t count the headache, of course.
There had only been a few people brave enough to knock on his door since the INCIDENT. The first time, it was an older woman bringing him a little container of brownies, but the second he put his hand on the plastic box she snatched them back saying, “oh, how could I be so insensitive? They’re in a BOX and they’re the color of dirt. Let me go get you a round container... and cookies!” And boy did she follow through, Wyatt didn’t even think to ask how she’d made the cookies whiter than paper, but they’d been delicious.
When he finally opened the door to find a little lady there, it made him think of the time those two boys (couldn’t be older than twelve) came to his door. They’d wanted to know what IT was like and why he didn’t look like Gollum. Wyatt hadn’t said one word to them before shutting and locking the door.
He hoped he didn’t have to do that again this time.
But then she started speaking and he was overwhelmed with how many words were coming out of her mouth. He narrowed his eyes and stared at her lips, half of his face hidden behind the door, as she ranted on. He’s certainly never met her, but he knows her voice. He’s sure he’s heard it echoing through the halls.
When the wild story is over and she holds out one of the coupons, he simply stares at it for a long moment. He has been running low on food for a while. His mom was supposed to bring him his box of supplies for the month almost a week ago. He’d called her and she insisted she’d be there within the next few days, but did he want to wait?
‘ you have to speak more, Wyatt! Just put yourself out there! ‘, his therapist’s voice rang in his head.
The thought made him sigh softly through his nose before he slowly pulled his door open wider, revealing all of him. He stepped closer to her, and as he reached out to carefully take the coupon he checked up and down the hallway, shoulders untensing when he made sure they were empty. It was just the two of them.
❝ I-I’ll eat... anything. — thanks. ❞
His voice is just above being a mumble, but he ignores that fact just like he ignores the empty rumble of his stomach as he looks over the coupon. He’s definitely hungry and he has the freedom to get food whenever he wants now, he doesn’t have to wait for anyone else anymore... well, except his mother.
❝ I think... I’ll, uhm, get this now. ❞
