“Perspective is completing- it gives meaning to everything. I find it very reassuring actually.
I meant luckily for them since apparently you think I’d bore them.”
“Reassuring? In what way? Death isn’t all that reassuring. I mean, who knows what they’ll do with your body after you’re gone. Maybe you’ll just, poof. I do not think you’d bore them, probably just drift them off into an existential crisis way before their time. They’d go home to eat their candy and all of a sudden realize all these silly holidays are meaningless.”

“I’m sorry. It just made me laugh.”
“Do I look silly? I’d rather silly than scary - I don’t think there’s ever really been a scary cowboy in the history of cowboys has there?”

“How is that depressing? Luckily I don’t get a lot of trick-or-treaters since I live in a third floor apartment.”
“Well I mean, you go on about how everything eventually dies it puts your life into perspective and kind of makes the mood a little low, don’t you think? I’d rather not think that eventually all I’ll be is bones, instead I want to think about how right now I’ve got skin and I’m alive and well, yeah? Luckily? You don’t like seeing the kids dress up in costumes? Though if I were still young I’d probably still climb up to a third story apartment.”

“I’m not really sure what that was.. I’m still a little confused by the costume.”
“What’s so confusing about it? It’s a cowboy hat. I’m a cowboy.”

“Cowboy? Not bad. I don’t usually indulge in costumes, so it took me a couple of months to come up with something of my own.”
“Yes, actually, I am. I’m glad someone could get it, I was afraid no one would be able to. And what are you again?”

“Well.. wow. Looks great.” Heidi laughed a bit.
“Is that sarcasm? I really can’t tell.”

“These are more than just festive decorations, you know. It’s about celebrating death as being a part of the human experience- knowing that every living thing will eventually die. Every human being, no matter how beautiful or well-dressed, will eventually be exposed as nothing more than a skeleton and skull. The half-decorated calacas and calaveras recognize this duality. That’s worth noting, I think.”
“That’s the most depressing fucking thing I’ve heard all day - I sure as hell hope you don’t go on saying that to kids when they show up to your house on halloween.”
“I spent a lot of time on my costume - not much money, but a lot of time. It took me two days to think of putting the hat on my head.”

“I’d feel weird arresting Bob the Builder.”
“Then I’ll dress up like Bob the Builder year round and commit crimes so you won’t arrest me because you’ll feel too weird about it.”

“I just hope I don’t get called into work on Halloween. What are you dressing up as?”
“I’d fucking surrender the moment a cop in a viking’s costume hunted me down. I’ll be sure to get in a bar fight and specifically ask for you. I’m thinking Bob the Builder, but who knows.”

“How’s this for a costume?”
“Amazing,” Boyd retorted, trying his best to keep back his laugh. There was something comical about adults trying to carry on a child tradition, especially when they wore foolish costumes. “You look fabulous, I’m sure the viking ladies will be all over you on Halloween.”

“I already can’t wait for spring.”
“Fuck spring,” Boyd grumbled, giving a shake of his head, stuffing his hands into his jacket’s pockets. “I want to skip and go right for Summer again.”

Heidi stood on the crowded city street holding a chai tea latte between her gloved hands. Lowering her face to the stream she did her best to warm up her body temperature. Hearing the stranger comment on the cold, she laughed and nodded. “Extremely, not sure if i’m ready.” She said shifting her body weight to the other foot. “I wouldn’t doubt it, last year was a very old one.”
He hadn’t expected the girl to respond to his open comment, but he was pleased in a response, raising both brows at the girl as she seemed to be trying her best to keep herself warm. It was as easy as ducking into a shop or wandering home to keep themselves warm, at yet, in the odd human existence they were conditioned to, they chose to stay out in the cold and comment about it. “Last year was a nasty one, wasn’t it? I think any winter would be better than last years. I don’t think I have enough clothes to layer up if we get any worse than that.”
“Sure is getting cold, isn’t it?” Boyd mumbled aloud, half to himself and half to anyone in earshot. He rubbed his hands together, hoping the movement would warm them, knowing very well it wasn’t cold enough for gloves. “Hopefully it’s not too cold of a winter.”
