Sam practices, over and over. Two fists in front of his chest pushed down and out, point to himself, fingers together tapping the corner of his mouth than his cheekbone, then point out. May I kiss you?

Even after he’s pretty sure he has it, he keeps practicing. He wants it to be fluid, easy, and he doesn’t want to forget. He’s in the library, moving his hands over and over--down and out, point, tap tap, point. They aren’t hard movements or anything, but he wants them to be right.

“Sam,” a voice says. Sam jumps, startled, and turns. Eileen is standing there, an incomprehensible expression on her face. Sam prays that she just walked up. How did he not notice her?

“Hi,” Sam says. “How long have you been standing there?”

Eileen blinks, then she signs Can I kiss you? Sam wishes she had gone slower so he could see the movement better.

“Did I do it wrong?” he asks. He must’ve, if she’s showing him how to sign it. “Can you do it again?” She frowns and signs it again. Sam copies her movements as she goes.

“Thank you,” Sam says, and then she signs it again, her fingers moving aggressively.

“Can I kiss you?”

Oh.

“Oh,” he says. He’s an idiot, and she tells him so after they break apart, her fingers lodged firmly in his hair. He laughs sheepishly, and she rolls her eyes fondly and kisses him again.
