we, as a fandom, have moved past hating the female characters in The Outsiders. and I hope all the young adults that read the book can understand that Cherry had no obligation to say hi to Ponyboy or be his friend, whether it’s a matter of societal pressure or her own judgment. he was an accessory to her boyfriend’s murder and she’s known him for approximately two days. she doesn’t owe him anything. 

ALSO. any girl is entitled to reject any guy that tries to talk or flirt with them. any person is allowed to reject another person who makes them feel uncomfortable.  please understand this as an important point of the book and the world, whether it’s 1965 or 2020.

I promise you all that you can recognize these indisputable facts and that the  fictional male characters will not love you any less.
