"I'd ask if he wants to hang out, yeah. Not gonna come off too strong. Deckerd takes things a bit too seriously, and I ain't ready for all that. At least not right away. It'd be nice to just see 'im more, have some time alone and check his reaction. I felt somethin' goin' on after the mess with Kirisaki, but it could've just been Deckerd being...well, Deckerd. I gotta figure out what he thinks about me."

"Let's just say there is a will, but a way hasn't presented itself." Gunmax laughed a little, rubbing the back of his head. "Something always comes up, and it's kinda hard to get him alone."
Shadowmaru was, of course, cognizant of Gunmax's tension, and aimed to help put him at ease with humor rather than naked sincerity.
"Of course," he said. "Given that the secret doesn't endanger you or the team overmuch, I shall take it to my grave." He mimed crossing his non-existent heart.
Gunmax appreciated the lightheartedness of their interaction. The whole reason he came to Shadowmaru was because he didn't want to have to deal with the sort of open, genuine concern that left him feeling uncomfortable and raw, and his desk mate seemed to understand that better than everyone else.
"Nah, it's got nothing to do with the team or work." He smiled, trying to look reassuring. "Thanks, man. I owe you one." Yikes. Too sincere. He went on before things could get awkward. "I was wondering if you could take my shift on Monday, but make it look like you wanna trade one of your shifts for mine. I have something I gotta do, and I don't really want questions from the others."

"To put me in a bad situation every time? Unquestioningly," Shadowmaru jokes. "Now. What horrible idea have you cooked up in that AI chip of yours this time?"
"Shut up, asshole. I'm being serious." Gunmax gave Shadowmaru a small shove on the arm, a lopsided grin on his faceplate, but he seemed a bit tense, trying to play it off with his usual banter.
"For the record, my ideas are always top notch. Don't tell me Deckerd's got you convinced about my supposed 'recklessness'." Even as he griped, his expression eased with visible fondness for their leader. "Anyway, I need to know if you got my back. I figured you of all people would know how to keep a secret, no questions asked."

"The fuck..." Gunmax muttered in English as he was given yet another handful of eggplants. "...Thanks?" He switched to Japanese, rubbing the back of his head. "You a farmer or something?" That airheaded sister of the boss would probably appreciate the vegetables. He decided to keep them for now, and drop them off along with the first batch to the Tomonaga household after his shift.

"Craziest thing I've ever done? You tryin'a get me in trouble?" Gunmax gave a lopsided grin. "I ain't one to kiss and tell, but since it made national news..."
"The craziest thing I've ever done was definitely runnin' down a barrier while my old colleagues were chasin' after me with my baby in the backseat. In my defense, Deckerd was the one to handcuff himself to me. Always knew he's got a wild side under that law-abiding, good-cop look."
