My favorite coping apps and mindfulness apps!
In the past week, I basically downloaded every Anxiety/Depression coping apps and mindfulness apps on the U.S App Store, and tested each and every one, some for hours, some for days, until I gleaned through all of them and kept only the ones that 1) utilizes CBT and/or DBT concepts and skills, 2) have friendly and intuitive user interface that can quickly direct you to the emergency soothing/coping tools when youâre overwhelmed by stress/anxiety/depression, 3) are helpful and resourceful even without ever upgrading to the premium, or are simply free.
This post focuses on the coping apps, if anyone is interested, I will talk about the mindfulness apps.
Now I will introduce them one by one.
1. Whatâs Up - free without premium option, great for anxiety/depression, or any overwhelming negative emotions. Utilizes DBT coping skills and has a bunch soothing practices. Good for daily use and great for emergency/crisis (such as anxiety attacks, suicidal episodes).
2. DBT Travel Guide - free w/o premium option. As the name suggests, this is a DBT app. It uses the DBT concepts developed by Marsha M. Linehan, has lots of texts for you to read and learn about DBT. Has audio DBT practices guides. Also good for daily use and emergency/crisis.
3. Companion - free with in-app purchases to unlock more content. This one is CBT based. Good for anxiety and stress. Has a bunch of practices and explains how each of the CBT thought practices work. Has one mindfulness audio guide (body scan). Good for daily practices. Not the best for emergency/crisis.
4. MindShift - free w/o in-app purchase option. This one is good for anxiety and stress. More CBT-based. Better for emergency/crisis than daily learning.
5. Anxiety Helper - totally free. This one is great for anxiety/depression/stress/ptsd. Lots of stuff to read and offers lots of self-soothing/distraction practices/games. My favorite thing about this app is that it has a âpanic buttonâ to let the people with you know that youâre experiencing anxiety and teach your people how to help you in those moments! (See the screen cap!) great for both daily learning and emergency/crisis.
6. SAM - completely free. Great for helping you keep track and managing your stress and anxiety. Good for daily use and self assessment, but not the most ideal for emergency/crisis.
7. Be Okay - free, no premium. A simple, intuitive anxiety/stress instant relief app. Not for daily use (hopefully) and not the best for emergency/crisis.
8. CBT-i Coach - totally free. This app is actually developed for veterans experiencing PTSD-related insomnia. Itâs strictly CBT based. Lots to read and learn. And lots of soothing practices and audio guides. Great for people with anxiety/stress related insomnia.
9. Calm Harm - totally free. This app is specifically designed to calm your self-harm urges. It uses lots of self soothing and distraction skills developed by DBT. You can choose the length for the skill/game that you want to practice. UI is very intuitive, you open the app, you choose the length and type of the skill you want to use, and go. It asks you to re-assess your urges at the end of the game. Great for emergency and crisis!
Ok, thatâs it! Like I said, I also experimented with a bunch mindfulness apps. If anyoneâs interested I will talk about them tomorrow!
