when i started my job, i had to watch two days of training videos that were all about compliance and saving the store money, things like checking ids, never double bagging items, the consequences of stealing, how to beg for donations from customers, how to politely stop shoplifters.
but the one that stood out to me the most was the 10+ minutes video about the evils of labor unions and how they only exist to steal your hard earned money and stand in the way of the corporation taking care of you... now listen
i make $12/hr. this is not enough to pay my bills or to feed myself, but it is too much to qualify for SNAP where i live. the two days of videos i watched was the ONLY training i received. i was put on register without even being told how to make a sale. i did not know how to clock in or out. i did not know how to locate items in the store to put them away. i did not know how to use the handheld scanner. i straight up did not know anything but compliance standards and that unions are evil.
i complained about not being trained how to do things and was told to just figure it out, its "common sense". when i ask for help finding things, not a single member of the management staff will help me, they will just say "its over there" and point to a random corner of the store and expect me to find it in a cupboard buried under six other things. i can not make voids on my register and there are no walkie talkies or other means of getting assistance, i have to hunt for help for 5+ mins while the manager is nowhere to be found and customers are just leaving the store without paying bc they dont want to wait. my schedule is a mix of first and second shifts. they are trying to pressure me to take a promotion i do not want, for a 25 cent raise and twice the responsibility. i am extremely overqualified for the position yet they treat me like an idiot for not having the "common sense" to know how their store works without being told.
on top of all of this, the a/c in the store is broken and it has ben 90 degrees inside for three weeks now, every day, every shift, standing inside an oven trying not to pass out while i take care of their customers.
labor unions stand up for your rights as a laborer. they not only fight for you to be paid fairly, but also to be trained properly and to ensure your safety always comes first. they negotiate with upper management on your behalf for you to be treated as a human being. if they charge you a $20 monthly union fee but they win you an extra $3/hr, youre still making $460 more per month than you were without the union fee (assuming a 40 hour position).
the union i used to work for fought for me constantly. every time management made me do something i wasnt supposed to do, i got a grievance check. every time they forced me to stay at work when i could have gone home, i got a grievance check. i got paid time off when my cat died. i got paid sick time and paid vacation time and health benefits that were negotiated with the healthcare companies to be significantly cheaper than traditional insurance plans with even better packages. i had retirement and a dupe for a 401k. i attended monthly meetings where the union organizers were extremely transparent about everything they had been working on. i knew the president personally and could speak to him whenever i had a concern about something. all of the officials were elected. i had mandatory days off so i could not be worked 7+ days in a row. i paid $30/mo and made $21/hr. i got a raise every single year in addition to cost of living raises. i was trained well and my safety mattered. i was good at my job bc they made sure i was enabled to be good at my job. i understood what my rights were and how valuable i was to the company. my position was protected against reactionary discipline.
without a labor union, you have no rights. they can do whatever they want with you and tell you youre lucky to be employed at all. they can fire you for calling off to go to the doctor you cant afford. they can fire you for being black or queer or too outspoken or GOD FORBID you have a nonvisible disability, and theyll just say its bc you were lazy or find some other excuse they cant be sued for. they can pay you so little you cant feed your kids. they can make you work in an airless 90 degree cement block and bust your balls the whole time about how youd never survive the heat out west.
