Extremely loud and Incredibly Close was a very interesting book but I felt like it was more of a burden to read rather than actually enjoy. It was harder to jump from character to character in this novel then in The Things They Carried as well as the ending was a letdown in my opinion. I was hoping the key, the map of the park, or maybe the whole story was going to end in an interesting way, but that was not the case. It seemed to be a huge build up and then Foer just ended it.

Going out of town this past weekend set me back a bit, but from what I have read in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close so far has been fairly easy to follow even though his postmodernism style is everywhere, just like Tim O’Brien. Oskar seems to be a curious 9 year old with a mind of someone much older, and maybe even a deeper mental problem as well. Grandpa losing his voice was interesting how some words went before others, and what was causing his muteness? Was it fear or something else?

I made this the other day after finishing The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien.

Tim O’Brien’s style of writing is much jumbled and unorganized providing a great example of what postmodernism is exactly. Although the book was everywhere it was still had such a great back story, like a movie that just keeps changing scenes to explain a much bigger story. The last line in the book was such a great way to end though. It actually made you think of so much more, and realize how much the real versus seeming truth has affected him in his life. He tells the seeming truth to fill in the gaps of what he may not actually remember fully of the war, but it’s also a way for him to escape into a false reality of what has gone on in his life. Just like his dreams of Linda, and what seems like this entire story they’re a way of coping with his past that continues to haunt him. All in all it was Great book to start with, and hopefully the next one is good as well.

Tim O’Brien’s creates vivid images with his use of words that make the each chapter memorable even though the story continues to be all over the place. Even though it’s so scattered but easy to follow, and Turing out to be an interesting “True War story”. In the Chapter “The Man I Killed” it makes you think that Tim is actually talking about himself in a lot of aspects.  He says the man probably went to college, and did not want to be in this war just like him. Forced by the government and fighting for things they did not believe in or even care much about to begin with. This makes you think a lot about what it would actually take to be put in his situation, and would you run or stay and be forced to fight?

The modern mind. A series of normal conceptions. Brief, normal images. Like a cat on a stick covered in antibiotics, indescribable? An unflinching narrator presuming it’s life; a conflicting caricature. Thoughts may be medium in length at most, yet sometimes short. These short thinkers can be emotionally invested in the status quo like a first love.

A postmodernist thinks without the bounds set by the indiscriminate founders of society riddled by apprehension. As Neil Degrasse Tyson once said, “what exactly is postmodernism, except modernism without the anxiety?” That is, the anxiety that we must act within society’s rules. Postmodernists create art with no boundaries and extend beyond reality like a five dimensional hypercube composed of legos

(For copyright’s sake, that quote was from American novelist Johnathan Lethem, not Neil Degrasse Tyson. I’m that postmodern.)

Almost as confusing as the see the moon? story. Seems like no explanation can truly explain postmodernism.

This article above helped clear up the idea of postmodernism a little better for me. There is no guidelines to the art or writing when it comes to these artist and authors.  It really seems that the story “See the Moon” was a good representation of what postmodernism is. After reading it I Hope that the rest of the material we do have to read is nowhere close to that confusing.
