Lots of people come home from the office and numb out to the TV until it’s time to fall asleep; some people use that time to desperately search for meaning. That might be making tapes, painting, training for marathons, collecting coins. It doesn’t really matter. We choose to reclaim our identity from the system we all have to fit into, and it doesn’t matter if anybody sees us doing it. Who cares if you only ever sell 50 copies of a tape, or you’re always in the middle of the pack for that marathon? You put an original and authentic stamp of “you” out into the world for a moment, an act of will and redefinition. The act itself is what’s important.
