As soon as Anti felt an arm wrap around him, his entire body tensed up as his brain screamed at him to reject the touch. To get away lest this were a cruel trick or a trap before it was too late.
But his body didn’t listen. Once he realized that it was a kind embrace, Anti’s muscles practically melted like butter as he gently leaned into the half hug like an abused puppy that was experiencing affection for the first time. He was a little… starved for this kind of attention. Quint’s presence was like a sturdy rock for Anti to hold onto, anchoring him to the present moment so that he wouldn’t spiral too far.
“… it… hhh… every day… it feels like I have to work harder than everyone else every day… how do they all make it look so easy…”
Anti reached up to raise his visor so that he could wipe at his eyes. Getting all messed-up over something so silly… he was ridiculous, wasn’t he… he really hoped that Quint wasn’t repulsed by him in any way. Who wants to watch someone cry? Nobody. It was uncomfortable and uncool. He should be better than this…

“Mm…”
After a moment, Anti sat back down beside Quint once more and pulled his legs to his chest. The thoughts swirling around in his head weren’t very fun or good, and yet… for once, it felt okay to think about these things. Acknowledging the things that hurt and bothered him to Quint brought him some strange feeling of comfort. Was that weird?
“… I was made without a purpose. Without any grand meaning behind my creation. Nothing more than just to see what would happen. I think my creator… my dad… I think he’s disappointed that I turned out like this. I wasn’t born with a killer instinct and I hate following orders.”
His shoulders began to shake as he squeezed his eyes shut.
“But even though I didn’t want to follow him, all I ever wanted was his love and attention. I thought I could at least impress him. Show him that I could be smart and as strong as everyone else. But nothing was ever enough. I’m just…”
A mistake.
Anti sighed deeply and buried his face into his arms. Why was he being so open and honest with Quint? He even pointed out how they’ve only just met. Has it even been half an hour yet? Ugh, he was being completely ridiculous! It’s no wonder people don’t like talking to him!

Anti straightened back up with a raised index finger.
“With even limited free will, there is always a choice! I’ve met Robot Masters before who were… less than kind… and it all had to do with who they were as people.”
He lowered his hand and rubbed his arm uncomfortably.
“Though, it’s entirely possible that they were just reacting to me and that they’re super nice to everyone else…”
Quint turned to face Anti once more, lips parted and jaw open, like he had something to say.
... But it never comes. Quint suddenly remembered what happened...happens to Ballade. His sacrifice. He hasn't made it yet, but Quint remembered how upset he was when he watched it. He also remembered how Quick Man decided to see himself shut down after their effort to save him. How he'd rather stay loyal to Wily instead of doing good. That was his choice. How Skull Man, someone who was made specifically for combat, actively chooses peace, and to do good, every single day. He'd forgotten that there were still robots that choose to do good. That there were still robots that had that choice.
He just didn't have one.
"Maybe you're right. But we're still limited by our programming. There's only so much we can do."
Anti whimpered softly as his antennas drooped.
“… I remember meeting someone once on a cold and rainy day… he… put some things into perspective for me. And he made me realize for the first time how… small I am. And how wrong my perception of ‘good’ and ‘evil’ were.”
He looked up at the sky as memories played out before his eyes.
“There’s just so many shades of grey… I feel… comforted when I play make-believe. When I pretend that things are as black and white as they used to be. I don’t mean any harm by my monologues, really I don’t. I just… wish I could go back… to when I thought the world made sense…”

Anti scoffed quietly and waved his free hand.
“Normally I don’t, but I can tell that you’re good people,” he responded warmly before he tucked the device back safely into his scarf where it belonged. “I trust you, Quint.”
That was… true. And it was sort of a big deal for Anti. He was so used to being ignored, overlooked, and put down by other people. But Quint? He made Anti feel seen and heard, like his thoughts and opinions mattered. Like he mattered. And that meant more to him than he knew how to put into words.
Quint felt like… a friend. A real friend.
Now that made Quint feel guilty. At one point, he was. And he still wanted to be, but now....
...
"...You just met me today." He reminded. "But... You can trust me." Quint wouldn't want to hurt Anti. That much he was certain of. He was a good person, and Quint admired that. He wished he could still be one. "Still. You really ought to keep that stuff to yourself. Take it from me: people will use any edge they can get."
Anti nodded with a quiet grunt in acknowledgment. Quint had definitely seen some horrors and been through his fair share of hardship, it was easy to tell. Anti would be a fool not to take his advice to heart.
“People are so complicated and unpredictable. It’s hard to know who you can trust sometimes…”
Rising up to his feet, Anti adopted his deep gravelly voice once more as he took on a stance that he thought was especially dark and broody.
“The people in this world sicken me… human, robot… is there even a difference between them anymore? Each and every one of them has the capacity to stab you in the back for their own selfish gain. This planet is rotten to its core…”
Anti finished off his very deep and insightful thought with another practiced pose as the ends of his long tattered scarf began to sway dramatically in a breeze that coincidentally blew past them as if to encourage his shenanigans.

Anti sighed and leaned forward to rest his chin in the palm of his hand.
“That sounds like my comrades, if you can even call them that. If Benjamin’s not playing his keytar, he’s training to kill stuff. And if Waya’s not gushing over her dumb crush, she’s stabbing everything that moves. I lost count of how many times I’ve had to dodge her and her stupid swords,” he grumbled. “Just because I can be rebuilt doesn’t make it hurt any less, you know? It’s one of the reasons why I want to become stronger. So I can at least keep up with them.”
"I hear you. That's why I've always hated fighting. I don't even like sparring. At most, I train with Sakugarne, because I'm not used to a support unit like him." Quint hummed, letting his feet drop to the side of the building. "I used to help build robots. I hate destroying them. I know how much it hurts. Especially if there's a situation where shutting them down could...." He swallowed. He'd never forget the first time he almost died.
Oh no… Anti could tell that Quint was remembering something unpleasant. Had he lost someone close to him because of a repair gone wrong, maybe? That was a terrifying thought. Sure, he was not especially close to Waya or Benjamin, but losing either of them forever would still… he didn’t want to think about it.
“Well, hey… building robots, that’s kind of a big deal! It’s like you could build your own family with your bare hands. That’s pretty darn cool,” Anti smiled in an attempt to lift Quint’s spirits back up. “I don’t know if I could build a whole person. But I did build this all by myself,” he said as he reached into his scarf to pull out an unassuming metal box with a single button in the middle of it. “This lets me directly tap into my power to trigger fusion. Theoretically, I could use this to fuse our bodies together and turn you into a half-human!”
Anti held the button close to his chest with a sheepish smile.
“But it’s kind of unsettling for me. Unless we’re mentally on the same wavelength, I could lose my grip and fade away to the back of our shared mind. That’s why I try to only use this power in an absolute emergency!”
On purpose, anyways. He could still fuse with someone accidentally if he took on too much physical damage. Primarily, his ability was a built-in failsafe to keep himself alive by assimilating the bodies of others. Only, it sort of backfired and had the opposite effect…

Oh… ohhh wow. Wowie wowie wow. Anti couldn’t help but feel like this was a super heavy topic with a lot to unpack for Quint. Was Anti really prepared to dive into something like this with him? He didn’t really know. They’ve only just met and all…
“I think I get what you’re saying… at the same time, I’m not sure if I really like the alternative,” he shrugged. “Being a helpless citizen, a bystander, watching things go down and being helpless to stop it… I know there’s people in my life who just want me to… be a normal kid. But what’s the point of my power if I just stand by and do nothing, you know what I mean..?”
"I think I understand...." Really he did. Quint had been there. Nobody else would fight. Nobody else could fight. So he begged for power. Dr. Light gave him power....
But that was past and gone. That power was stripped, and now....
"But. Nobody said you had to be helpless..."
Anti frowned slightly as he turned his body a little to better face Quint.
“Sometimes it feels like I am. What do you do to feel stronger? Like you have some control over your life,” he asked with a hint of vulnerability.

“Better than nothing,” Anti agreed as he raised up his hands and shrugged. “I want to be a hero that people can rely on. One that people can turn to no matter what. But how can I do that when I’m so…”
Anti began to quite literally wiggle his arms around like boneless noodles, not to show off his unique anatomy but to highlight his tragic lack of big buff muscles.
Quint stared, more curious than alarmed, but looked out at the skyline once again.
"Maybe it's a blessing. When you become a hero, it's not exactly a role you can quit. Even when you want to. No matter how much you want to." Quint pulled up his knees and just... Hugged them.
Anti stopped waving his arms around and lowered them slowly as he considered Quint’s words. He suppose he never thought about that.
“… huh. Sounds like you’re talking from experience,” he responded quietly. “Is that what you’re up here to get away from? Some role you’re obligated to carry out?”
