I just smelt summer. It was balmy nights and damp hair. Hot skin limbs on freshly-laundered cotton. Blackberries and rose bushes and just-mowed grass. Barbecued skewers and lemon in water. It was heads in caps and bodies in suncream. Love and heat, ripe peaches and softness. It was freedom and warmth and touch and togetherness; nostalgia swirled into the present, like caramel. The cool of the mornings and nights that feel sticky, hot air from a fan being spun round the room. The window cracked open, a breeze when it comes. But that scent, it was summer distilled in a moment.
