to say he saw this coming would be a silly thing.
death was all around, the war wasn’t stopping, people went where they were needed —- he should’ve never left pippins side. it was a mistake.
he didn’t see it coming per-say, but he felt it.
soulmates are often seen as lovers —- but that’s not true. he knew, everyone knew, pippin knew —- the cousins were soul mates. bound to be side by side till death did them part. it was stupid to say he felt it – felt the absence of pippin grow heavy like something had happened. but he did. and it felt horrible. worse than anything could’ve thought up.
to hear that he was right to feel what he had … words make no match for the lost. it’d be hard. people would move on, forget of tales and all would become myth soon enough. but merry swore, he swore on his own life – which now felt rather without reason, that they would meet again. he’d win this for pippin. he wouldn’t cry.
but he did. a lot. at simple things that made people worry he’d lost it.
but that was in the future. and this was now.
this was life now, in the moment – useless and dangling. merry wouldn’t be a danger to himself or others —— not to his friends at least.
this knowledge was put to war. he had so much to live for, but his bestfriend, his soulmate, was no longer on the list of things that got him up in the morning.
merry didn’t reply to them, he wouldn’t break in front of them. he just go off and do something reckless — he’d never felt so angry. so he walked off, stumbling to who knows where. he blamed himself. he blamed gandalf. he even blamed frodo ——- reckless pippin, the fool of a took —– causing his cousin to feel anger beyond his height and twice as many. how awful, indeed.
