Classroom teachers, especially those who are just out of college and entering the profession, are more stressed and less valued than at any previous time in our history. They have to listen to a long list of politicians who belittle their ability, blame them for every student whose grades do not reach arbitrary standards, and want to take away every fringe benefit they have — everything from the possibility of achieving tenure to receiving a decent pension.

I found these classic school art projects over thanksgiving break. The first, a pasta picture frame pained gold to add class, and the second, a ceramic pumpkin Jack-o-Lantern.

11-9-14 Class response

Our in-class experiment this week was to create three self portraits of ourselves, one happy, one sad and one indifferent. When we were done Dr. Bey told us to rip each self portrait into 6 pieces. Then to create two portraits made of those ripped pieces. After that he had us share what ripped pieces we had lest and create one portrait with pieces from other people. This project forgot about the boundaries of school art, where we cherish works that we work hard on.  It totally threw that out the window. The result was more interesting portraits and made us realize Its okay to step out of those boundaries.

My cooperating teacher printed a huge picture of MLK for MLK Day, so it was tiled (72 pages). We had the K-2 grade color pages from it, but they didn’t know what it was. Then we pieced it together and hung it in the hallway near the entrance. I think it’s awesome!

I love how in the end of this project, although the kids worked seperately, they could see that the end result was something awesome that they essentially made together! it’s a great example of teamwork in a different light: collaboration!

Street art: City scape Stencil

In this class we created city-scape stencils using x-acto knives and thick paper. I really enjoyed this project with offered the objective of learning about the relationship of negative and positive spaces.

Torn paper project

In this class we created our own paper collages of "the first snow." this promo allowed for a variation in composition and ideas. It also created conversation of when we saw our first snow and changed the regular cut paper collage into an entirely different image.

I haven’t had a painting class for a year so I’ve been loving trying out some new projects with my students this semester. The students have been working exclusively with oil so I decided to have them try out some impasto paintings! 

We spent about a week working on this project. I set up simple still lifes and they completed at least two compositions. The first one was pears and the second was gourds. 

The students started by painting canvas paper with an acrylic base color. While those dried, I did a pretty in depth demo of the impasto technique. I emphasized using thick brush strokes and working from basic forms to smaller details. 

I had the students stand while they worked on these which seems to keep them moving pretty quickly. They spend about three days working on their two paintings and then had a day to do touch ups. This project was fast!

I love the way these turned out. Some of them really took to the technique and some student struggled with the more unrefined style. I kept reminding them that it was ok to mess up since they had never done this before. I mostly loved it because the atmosphere in the room was so nice. Loose, experimental, and energetic - my favorite kind of project!

Although I think this is inaccurate, it makes a good point. In Delaware we have Cab Calloway school of the Arts (CAB). It is a PUBLIC school that emphasizes preforming and visual arts. Their manifesto is: 1. Arts and academics have equal value.

2. Arts are integral to education. 3. Through expressional learning and the act of creating, students develop self esteem and self confidence. 4. An education in the arts develops the student as a whole person; academically, emotionally, physically, intellectually, and socially. 5. Passion of learning originates from a passion of teaching. 6. Innovation is fundamental to teaching and learning. 7. All children have a right to an education that recognizes different learning styles. 8. Educational success is the shared responsibility of the student, the family, the school, and the community. 9. All members of the school community have the right to a safe learning environment. 10. Technology allows education to become a more global experience. 11. Risk-taking and a willingness to change are necessary for continuous improvement. 12. Arts lead to a more balanced and innovative learner and citizen.

Also my roommate went to a school in public school in New Jersey where she also studied theater. "The Freehold Regional High School District Fine and Performing Arts Academy has provided conservatory type training since 1984 to young artists who want to combine a college preparatory academic schedule with advanced arts training in a traditional high school setting. "

What’s Going on Inside the Brain Of A Curious Child?

Students asking questions and then exploring the answers. That’s something any good teacher lives for. And at the heart of it all is curiosity.

But why? What, exactly, is curiosity and how does it work? A study published in the October issue of the journal Neuron, suggests that the brain’s chemistry changes when we become curious, helping us better learn and retain information.

Experiment #4 School Art Revisited: Eric Carle Collage

Materials: White Drawing Paper, Printer paper, Acrylic paints, assorted stamps/ texturized objects, brushes, water dishes, scissors, glue

The plan: 

1. Read a book by Eric Carle to students - study the art work and speculate how it was made 

2. Paint paper with various textures using different tequniques

3. Wait for paper to dry, then cut out paper into shapes to create a collage

Objectives: 

Learn about Eric Carle 

Speculate about a work of art, what materials, techniques and skills were used -Study Carle's work to determine how he did it.

Exploration of acrylic paints, mixing, brush techniques, stamping, etc. 

Ability to create compositions through collage- negative and positive spaces

This lesson taught not only skills like, creating a collage from paper, but also taught creative problem solving and allowed for exploration. 

My personal experience with this lesson was last year when I helped the art teacher from my sister's school. A class came in, and there was a shadow (some one who follows a student around to see if they would be a good fit). This boy was about 7 and had no interest in even stepping in the art room. When he finally did come in the room and sat down, he didn't know what to do because the class had already started the project. So I sat next to him and helped him and the people at his table along the way. He ended up making an awesome Eric Carle style green dragon. At the end of class when his teacher got to the door he said "i don't want to leave." That the experience that led me to want to become an art teacher. That you can help a child with just 30 min, some paper and a glue stick is an amazing feeling. This semester I realized how a students art class experience effects them. I think that reflect my personal experience of seeing the difference a good art class can make.
