Gabriel #WearingIrish - Brendan Joseph Bow Tie with Elks of Ireland Coat and Primark Trousers and Shirt. from Brendan Joseph on Vimeo.
Gallery Trunk Show at The Westbury
The Brendan Joseph Gallery Trunk Show is presented at N°5 The Westbury Mall, Grafton Street, Dublin as part of a series of #DesignIreland popups supported by The Doyle Collection and Design & Crafts Council of Ireland.
Opening Monday 28th November - Sunday 4th December with a special VIP event on Thursday 1st December. Working from his studio in Rathmines, Dublin, Brendan Joseph creates timeless wearable stories, crafting a distillation of Ireland's beauty for you to bring anywhere in the world. Each pocket square, bow tie, necktie, scarf and shawl is crafted from the finest silk, linen and cashmere yarn. Brendan Joseph tells the story of a special place in Ireland through both sight and touch, in unique braille-like woven surfaces, and in how the structures he has developed that imitate the incredible natural dance of light on water. Watch our videos for 'Silver Shore', 'Horizonless' or 'The Duck' and travel to their source, their colours change exactly as their sources do in every fractal of natural light. Brendan Joseph's creations are heirlooms, transcending seasons and trends, yours to cherish, enjoy and gift in their laser-engraved wooden gift boxes. A card with words and images evokes the story, bringing you back to Ireland, and video, imagery and text on our website immerses you further in the source - adding meaning and offering inspiration.

SILVER SHORE by Brendan Joseph from Brendan Joseph on Vimeo.
On the shoreline of Cúltrá our journey begins, amid rapid tides and swirling rain. We take one brave step past the edge of our known world into the uncontrollable unknown. This is that moment distilled.
Our woven structures emerge from the dazzling dance of lough and light, shimmering just like the sea, which changes colour in natural light.
From stark neutral tones of natural linen and silk, the sunlight awakens notes of pink, bronze, gold, grey, blue, and more, as the threads find their voice in its rays.

If you can't make my talk at @wearerubicon today, here is everything I want to say in one image, a boy climbs past the barrier to see the brush strokes of the painting with his touch. My grandfather was blind, and this is how he saw, with his hands. In my work, I encoded secrets and stories in the structures and surfaces of the weave, I shared it only with those who I trusted, and yet I was sad that so few people thought to even look at it with their hands, to look for meaning, but I was also scared of those secrets being discovered in a single touch. The artist as an adult retains the instinct of play and is an active participant in their life. To touch. To taste. To feel. To understand in seconds what years of study can only hint at. To invite others into our soul/spirit/imagination, our deepest hopes/dreams/fears, takes courage and intimacy. The work of the artist is to pursue what lies not within but beyond your imagination, and uniquely, we must give utter intimacy, for free to strangers and must be willing to surrender our control over meaning in order to grow. Irish tradition, music in particular carries an open invitation to transcendent play, there is permission, and when someone's singing or playing needs it, the room will call silent and with their feet, gently echo. Everyone is involved. I was reminded of this and excited last week at #macalla, a playing of @roisindebuitlear's glass objets led by Liam O'Maonlai in which a two part permission took place. The audience gave permission, or trust, to the artists to lead them, and the artists gave permission to the audience to use their feet, hands, voices and to be s part of the music. This picture came to me and changed my talk, and so I took a few hours this evening and drew it, so that you could see it too. (at Brendan Joseph Studio)

Getting ready to launch #SilverShore, our new Shawl woven and handmade in Ireland from silk and linen. This is the most exciting and most radical stripping back to my core DNA as an artist so far, and is the first of many beautiful new wearable artworks to come. If you've followed the story on my journal you'll know it's an extremely personal piece for me. Its launch is my 'Brendan voyage' where my work journeys at the the edge of the world and bares the stories and secrets that the mathematics of weaving have allowed me to encode and hide and which I'm now ready to show. Working on Piece 2 in the #JournalSeries, To Drown is To Breathe, take once daily. (at Dublin, Ireland)
