Gear Suggestions
I did want to write a brief post to anyone who is interested in doing a trip like mine. I thought I would give some gear recommendations. What I couldn’t live without and what I would’ve brought if I could do it again.
Nothing glamorous but might be helpful! So here it goes!
Sleeping bag: REI Helio Sack
This sleeping bag is super light weight, perfect for sleeping in hot humid climates. It also is very easy to pack because it compresses down into a tiny stuff sack.
Bug Net: REI Bug Bivy
I did not use my bug net as much as I thought I would on this trip. So for how often I was using it, the Bug Bivy was perfect. It is small and easy to pack. It has one pole that allows the net to prop up over your head, which gives you a comfortable sleeping space. Most people on my team brought Sans Bugs, which is like a tent. But I thought for the amount of times I actually used my net the Bug Bivy was the perfect size and not any hassle.
Pillow: Thermarest
If you are someone who is very specific about their sleeping setup, I highly suggest packing a pillow. I almost didn’t buy one because so many people told me it was a waste of space. The thermarest pillow is perfect for this trip though. It’s tiny and it rolls up so it’s easy to pack. It isn’t inflatable either which I like. It is made out of some type of special material so it fluffs up and compacts super easily.
Bug Spray: Anything and everything
People will tell you that you 90% deet in order to keep the bugs away. The honest truth is, the bugs are going to bite you no matter what. I brought a variety of bug spray. Bring some natural lemon and eucalyptus spray, as well as, some heavy duty deet. You can alternate and fine what works best for you. Osana soap is something that I used too. Its all natural, I washed my whole body with it any time I showered and it seemed to keep the bites at bay.
Clothes: Dress more for everyday life
I wish I would have brought more clothes that I was comfortable in and felt more like “me” in. By the end of the trip all my clothes were paint stained and ratty. I wish I wouldn’t have packed just running shorts and work clothes as my “everyday clothes”. Rather some nice shorts with pockets and a v-neck t-shirt would have been good for everyday wear. In regards to church, I would have brought more knee-lengh skirts and dresses (less maxi skirts) because those could have been worn throughout the week too.
Shoes: Chacos ALWAYS
I love love loved my Chacos! I never had any problems breaking them in. They never gave me blisters or were uncomfortable. I went in to a store and got fitted. I also had the woman show me how to adjust the straps, because thats probably the most complicated part of the shoe. Nothing but good things to say about these shoes.
I also packed a pair of Merrell hiking shoes. I loved these shoes as well. Had no problems breaking them in. They are incredibly comfortable and great for long hikes or working outside.
