What makes a great trainer great?
What makes someone a great trainer?
I used to believe important leadership traits like vision, initiative, tenacity, courage, motivation, humility, integrity and energy were the key. But the more I thought about it, I realized I was looking at it all wrong:
Do trainers lead traits or do they lead people?
People. 100% of the time.
It’s the human behind the goals and dreams, who’s working out so hard to live fit and healthy. It’s the human behind the lofty traits they aspire to live by on a daily basis.
And, 99% of the time, trainers are leading the most stubborn, most critical, most negative self-talk individual out there: Themselves...
Greatness - in life and in our career - isn’t a matter of our character traits, but rather the result of our choices.
Washington and Lincoln faced overwhelming challenges, and they made choices to take action and forever change history.
King Jr and Ghandi faced insurmountable adversity, and they made choices to lead with peace over violence and forever altered history.
Elon Musk and Richard Branson faced country governments, and they made choices to invest 100% of their time, money and focus to forever change the way we travel.
These great leaders saw where the world as it was and where it needed to go. Then they made choices put themselves between the two in a way that left the rest of us seeking out their wisdom and trying to emulate their every move.
So before we run out to copy the traits of great trainers who are atop of our industry, why not simply evaluate the choices we make on a daily basis?
What if we made a choice everyday...
...to bring our best, regardless of how we feel?
...to authentically lead our communities vs putting on a show of someone we’re not?
...to face our fear of building a truly great training business by refocusing on meeting the basic needs of our current community vs seeking out LIKES and SHAREs on Facebook?
...to rethink our current training philosophy to include more emphasis on sleeping more, eating better and training less vs focusing solely on crushing calories with a client who’s stressed to the max and running on the fumes from just 5.5 hours of sleep?
It’s challenging to ask “What if..?” but when you can wrestle with truthfully answering these questions and then to make a choice to take action in the direction of your fears, that’s when you’ll become one of the great trainers the rest of us seek to learn from....
5 Truths Every Fit Pro Needs to Know
The future of the personal training world is changing faster than we could ever imagine. It’s not so much that ground breaking studies prove a new set and rep scheme is superior. It’s not because we’ve discovered new ways to lunge. It’s not that we’ve discovered the fountain of youth...
The PT world is changing because the individual communities we serve are changing. It’s the human dynamic evolving that we as coaches have to adapt to or soon to find ourselves out of a career.
To hit this head on and become the catalyst of the next generation fit pro in your community, here are 5 principles to act upon...starting today
1) From Trainer to Leader:
Gone are the rep counting, all you need is more rah-rah, look at how hard I can crush you days of training. The communities we serve are seeking out you for one reason: Leadership.
They want you to know them, develop appropriate goal setting strategies, connect with them on an emotional basis (even guys look for that), match your personality to theirs, coach to their unique needs, and motivate them in creative ways. They long for you to hold them accountable and invest in their development both inside and outside of the gym.
They want a solid training program, but they yearning for a leader to help them achieve their goals in the most efficient way possible.
2) Leads by example:
There’s a shift happening and it’s impacting your community’s health. That shift is a refocus back on the basics of what it means to live fit: Sleeping more, eating better & training less.
Our communities of clients are growing tired of constantly being tired. They’re starting to realize that you don’t have to trash your body to become fit and they are seeking out leaders how are leading that move by example.
It’s easy for trainers to skimp on sleep, chug buckets of caffeine, train all morning, chug more caffeine, grab a quick workout, pound some protein bars, then fizzle through our afternoon training schedule all in the name of being the so called fittest trainer around.
Clients are starting to see through the cracks and that is why they are seeking leaders who are literally walking their talk.
3) Embraces vulnerability:
Self-awareness is your only sustainable competitive advantage.
There’s wisdom in a leader knowing who they are, their strengths, weaknesses, drivers, values & goals. It resonates with people when you authentically lead with that knowledge, accepting your own short-comings, but betting 100% on your strengths.
Gone are the days where a trainer has to be superhuman to be success. Show your clients the cracks in your armor. If you struggle with food, talk about it. If you struggle with a workout addiction, share it with them.
The most important part is that you should be you, nobody else. Be real and your clients will rave about you to their friends.
4) Focused:
We are a notorious industry in that we have the attention span of a squirrel - constantly searching, never fully invested in the long-term, and dart off at the sign of any sudden movement.
The future leaders of our industry will simply focus on one course of action until successful. And by successful, I mean that they are not only financially fit, but their business is thriving, they’re developing their teams leadership skills and they are refocusing their communities back to the basics of living fit.
5) Believes 100%: Time = Most Valuable Resource
The most valuable resource you own is your time. Only you dictate how you can spend it. You could waste mindless hours surfing social media or you can invest the same time into developing your own leadership abilities - which do you feel will have a great ROI?
Our time is slowly slipping away. We’ve fallen into the trap of “I’m so busy” to make ourselves feel important. But we’re simply so ‘busy’ because we lack focus around the key areas of our lives.
If we protected our time like we do the day before leaving on vacation - saying no to things that will get in the way of your #1 priority, laser focused the entire day, marking off your check list left and right, doing whatever it takes to accomplish one goal - we’d all redefine our time and suddenly find more of it available to invest in the most important things in our life: Relationships.
4 Step Financially Fit Process
Getting out of debt can be challenging. How do you become financially fit so you can sleep peacefully at night, not worrying about next months rent?
Here are your 4 steps to becoming financially fit:
1) Hand write out a monthly budget on paper:
This helps you to begin to understand where every incoming dollar is going
List all reoccurring bills and estimate others that are not fixed
Simply assign every dollar to a specific payment or account before the end of the month
2) Trim the “extra fat” spending:
Personal
Cutting cable TV in favor of Netflix’s and reading more
Only eating what you cook at home vs eating out
Biking to work vs excuses it’s too far (I biked 6 miles)
Inviting friends over to your home vs going out on the weekends
Business
Bringing lunch to work vs picking up something at the store
Purchasing used / refurbished equipment vs new
Cleaning your facility yourself vs hiring a cleaning service (I cleaned toilets for 8 years)
Asking clients to use online bill pay vs getting slammed with huge credit card fees
Cutting out monthly subscriptions (music, magazines, education platforms, etc) for now, but not for ever. Just until you get the debt paid off.
3) Map out your debt payment in a spreadsheet:
List all debt payments from smallest to largest
Start tackling the smallest payment with the same intensity we took towards living fit.
Once paid off, apply this payment to your next debt.
Continue this process of compounding your payments until completed.
4) Stick to it
An accountability partner who’s willing to meet with you monthly. One who’s willing to call you out if you spending goes A-wall or you fall off course.
A significant reason - a purpose - for achieving this life changing outcome…
Again, it’s a simple plan on paper. The struggle comes with sticking to it over the course of a few months or year.
Are You Financially Fit or Swimming in Debt?
Over 10 years ago, I took the hardest yet most gratifying step of my career: Getting out of debt.
At just 26, my wife (Cassie) and I accumulated over $220,000 in personal and business debt. My future outlook was bleak to say the least since we just opened Avenu and we just got married, had a handful of clients and rent was due.
Step 1: Monthly Budget
We set up a monthly budget on paper that showed us where every incoming dollar was going. We wrote out all our reoccurring bills and estimated others to the best of our abilities. Then we simply assigned every dollar to a specific payment or account before the end of the month.
We talked about the “extra fat” in our monthly spending we could cut - you know, the “I can’t live without” wants vs your true needs (hard).
To jog your memory of a few things we can live without, take a look:
Personal
Cutting cable TV in favor of Netflix’s and reading more
Only eating what you cook at home vs eating out
Biking to work vs excuses it’s too far (I biked 6 miles for 7 years)
Inviting friends over to your home vs going out on the weekends
Bringing lunch to work vs picking up something at the store
Business
Purchasing used / refurbished equipment vs new
Cleaning your facility yourself vs hiring a cleaning service (I cleaned toilets for 8 years)
Asking clients to use online bill pay vs getting slammed with huge credit card fees
Cutting out monthly subscriptions (music, magazines, education platforms, etc) for now, not forever. Just until you get the debt paid off.
Step 2: Debt Payments
We devised a simple plan on paper to pay off our debt. It was also a plan that was going to test our grit and ability to delay gratification to see through till the end.
We listed all our debts out on paper from smallest to largest (simple).
Next we started tackling the smallest payment with the same intensity we took towards living fit. As soon as we paid it off, we took that payment and began applying it to our next debt. And on and on the journey went, taking the debt payments and adding them to the next.
Again, it’s a simple plan on paper. The struggle comes with sticking to it over the course of a few months or few years.
3rd and final step: Sticking to it
When my daughter is tested with delaying gratification, she can get a little moody. But I’d expect that from a 6 year old.
When the initial excitement passed with getting out of debt, reality sat in: It’s going to be a couple year process.
Yes I got moody. Yes I wanted to splurge when all my friends were living large. Yes I wanted to buy the latest greatest equipment. Yes I wanted and wanted, right then and there.
If it wasn’t for my awesome accountability partner and wife reminding me that one day we were going to be able to build a business worth telling a story about, I believe we would be still paying off the debt little chunks at a time.
She reminded me how important it was to stick with the plan because one day, we would have a family and team to take care of. She reminded me that one day we would want to reward our team and pay them the best, we would have to follow our own path and do things differently.
So to remain focused throughout your journey of paying off your debt, you need two things:
An accountability partner who’s willing to meet with you monthly. One who’s willing to call you out if you spending goes A-wall or you fall off course.
A significant reason - a purpose - for achieving this life changing outcome…
Keep this is mind as you set off on this challenging, yet rewarding journey towards getting out of debt:
Yard by yard, life is hard. But inch by inch, it’s a synch.
What my career as a DJ taught me about creating an experience
I’m a quiet person. And when you hear that I DJ’ed for 10 years, you’d probably spit out your drink laughing.
But throughout those years, I’ve learned some amazing lessons around creating experiences that engaged people without saying a word. The craziest thing about this journey, is that I’ve used these same principles to build a training business around an experience.
Here are my 3 biggest takeaways:
The Art of the Playlist
Typically I’d map out the first 10 songs. It’s during this time, most people where arriving and connecting with friends. You wanted them to feel the beat, but not go crazy, since there needed to be time spent getting comfortable. As the set moved along, I’d pay attention to people’s body languages, facial expressions, and group dynamics to get a feel as to how the rest of the night was going to go.
This is where the art of the playlist came into play. It’s that feeling in your gut that you know something needs to go a different way, stay the same or drop all together.
In training, you can lay out a perfect session on paper. As the warm up begins to flow, you have to watch for the little signs that truly tell you how your clients are feeling. It’s that keen sense of awareness of not only yourself and how you show up, but the group dynamic. It’s easy to assume that everyone's on top of their game with a full nights sleep, proper eating and injury free.
What do their eyes tell you?
How did they greet you when you said hello?
Are they slouched over, walking with their head down?
Is there an extra bounce in their step or is it just a caffeinated jolt?
This is where the art of training comes into play and being able to make changes on the fly and still create a unique experience that entices them to come back and possible invite a friend.
People don’t want something truly new. Familiar done differently
There where times I had discovered a new song that I truly loved that hadn’t made it to the mainstream yet. I was like a kid in the candy shop waiting to play it. And when I finally mixed it in, it flopped...people left the floor. It was a complete buzz kill.
I had to swallow my pride and quickly mix in a familiar tune with a different beat.
When people are training with you, they don’t necessarily want you to bring them the latest and greatest training techniques. They like their old school favorites, even though you might be getting tired of them.
Where the true coaching artist shines is by taking some of the old school moves and putting a new twist on them. It’s not about reinventing the wheel, but about using the wheel for what it was initially intended for - moving people forward in an efficient manner.
It’s about an emotional connection
Songs bring back memories. It’s why you always flash back to a past relationship or your glory high school, Al Bundy days when you hear a song. When you factor friends around you and music together, that emotional connection to a song becomes even stronger. When you factor friends, music and a high quality environment, you have a recipe to create a connection beyond a simple interaction.
When people walk into your facility to train, it’s not just about the quality of the session. It’s about so much more. It’s about the....
...music
...set up of your facility and equipment
...greeting they get at the door
...way you introduce them to others around your facility
...interaction between your team and each client
...cleanliness of your bathrooms
...way you lead your clients through the session
...way you match your coaching style to each unique client, not forcing them to match up to your style.
...way you turn a group of strangers into a community of friends
Often, experiences are systemized into place. Like a robot, people follow the protocol and create an average experience.
When you turn the system into a unique work of art, seeing each and every interaction as a blank canvass to create something that builds a deep emotional connection, that’s when you win the game. That’s when you redefine the playing field for what it means to create an experience.
Throw out the protocol and break out the paint brushes...
Give your clients what they want by asking one question
Becoming a great trainer - a true leader of a community of clients - takes a different set of skills other than designing a program, dishing out grueling workouts and barking out motivational quotes.
In order to create lasting change in the communities a great trainer serves, we need to develop 3 powerful and challenging abilities:
1: Judgment
We have to help clients narrow down their focus to answer one key question “What problem are we trying to solve?” Fat loss. Building muscle. Preparing for a marathon. Getting rid of pain. Once you define what you’re trying to solve for, the answer becomes your focus and #1 priority moving forward. To become an influential trainer, one must choose the right problem to solve.
2: Open-mindedness
We have to be vigilantly open-minded to see past our own assumptions, ideologies, experiences and limitations. In order to help clients solve a problem (fat loss) and not just implement a short-term solution (supplements & metabolic circuits), great trainers have to consider as many possible remedies - no matter how incorrect, irreverent, roundabout or seemingly absurd they may initial sound. Maybe it’s a simple as going to be earlier and getting 7.5 hours of sleep each night vs adding another day of training or an extra mile to your run.
3: An eye on the consequences
We have to understand interrelationships and interdependencies between problems and potential solutions better than anyone else. For example, if we set up our clients on a 4 day a week, 5:30am fat loss program, yet fail to look at their sleeping habits, we could be doing more harm than good by forcing them to skimp on sleep. This is one of the great challenges of leadership - and it’s not a simple one.
Every ambitious trainer wants to maximize their influence in their clients lives. We can do this by asking a simple question:
What problem am I trying to solve?
It takes facing a tough conversation when a client wants to treat their training session like a buffet meal - a little bit of this and a little bit of that.
It takes focusing your own program design and not switching up things because you get bored.
It takes taking your foot of the gas from kicking your clients butt when you know they’re beat down from the stress of life and a poor nights sleep.
But to change the lives of the community we serve, we have to be willing to make better judgement, be more open-minded, and pay attention to consequences not just in the immediate session, but in the weeks, months and years to come working with your client.
What problem are you trying to solve?
How to Build a Debt-Free Training Business

How to truly measure business success
It’s a fit pro’s most asked question: How can I increase my training sales?
AKA: How can I make more $$$?
Some recommend that we:
Increase our conversation rate
Increase our ‘closing’ rate
Increase our sales per training client
All of these will directly lead back to increasing your bottom line, but they are missing a key measurement to business success.
A Numbers Game
First, we need to understand a simple number: Sales Per Square Foot (SPSF)
Why? Because it indicates how efficiently our facility uses its assets (people, time, equipment, space & money) to make sales, create a community and build a profit. For this reason, the higher the sales per square foot, the better.
How it Works
The average training facility makes only $297,000. The average square footage is roughly 4,200.
SPSF: $297,000 / 4,200 = $70.71 (Calculator: Sales Per Square Foot)
Boiled down, that’s only $24,750 a month to pay your rent, utilities, equipment loans, debt payments, monthly subscriptions, grow your business, teammates, yourself, and hopefully, you have a few extra dollars left over to save up for a rainy day.
Why SPSF is Key
When our SPSF increases, we begin to deploy our business assets more efficiently. That means...
people are sitting around less.
equipment is being used more.
training floor space is taken up by clients.
and time, the most valuable asset a personal training company owns, is finally utilized to the max.
Action
Use this calculator to discover your SPSF
If you’re below $100 SPSF...
Start with a monthly written budget (Download Here)
Do a time audit of your day, week & month.
What are your time wasters?
60 min sessions vs 30 mins?
1v1 vs small group (2-4)?
Surfing social media for LIKES, comments and check-ins?
Writing blogs to become ‘the expert’ vs actually training?
Busy being busy...not really accomplishing much?
Develop an action plan to waste less time... :-) and achieve the $100 SPSF - ASAP
If you’re above $100 SPSF...
Have you paid off all your debt? (Here’s a Step-by-Step)
Do you have a 3-6 month emergency fund of expenses set aside in a separate savings account?
Are you saving 25% of your monthly profit for taxes?
Aim to reach the $200 SPSF in 1 years time.
How to Build a Healthy Brand
There’s always talk about ‘building a culture’ and how it creates your brand reputation.
But the single greatest question we must ask ourselves first:
Is my business even healthy to begin with?
When our businesses are healthy, the finances seem to fall into place, word of mouth marketing works like a charm and team unity explodes as more and more clients seek our services.
Here are 5 questions to help you determine if your business is even healthy enough to begin exploring how to build a true brand:
Is there a lack of trust amongst your team and our community of clients?
Do we avoid having the tough conversations (AKA: scared of conflict)?
As a group, have we all bought into the story of the business?
Are we holding each other accountable to the commitments we have made?
Where is our focus: Collective Team Goals or Individual Goals?
How Are You Wired To Workout?
What if you could discover an optimal way to help your clients eat, workout, and set achievable health and fitness goals?
Guess what, you can!
Personalization is the key to unlocking your health and fitness goals. That’s why we’ve created a simple framework from the best-practice in peak performance psychology that equips you with the knowledge and tools to optimize your approach to health and fitness: The Four Workout Styles™.
DRIVERS
For the DRIVERS out there (like me) who focus on precision and an end goal of achieving practical results, success is a calculated process. You believe talk is cheap unless it is followed by immediate action and a measurable outcome where you can keep score. Your approach to health and fitness is nothing short of an obsession. Your sheer will to persevere and hard-charging race to finish what you start is what sets you apart from the masses.
Workout Style Tips:
Exercise is about a measureable routine. Keep it simple, intense and maximize your time for optimal results.
Nutrition is about fuel and efficiency. Plan out your meals and prepare ahead of time for your busy week ahead.
Goal Setting is about the next quarter. You’ll be successful by mapping out where you want to be in 90 days and tracking your progress accordingly.
DOERS
For the DOERS out there who focus on consensus and an end goal of engaging others in meaningful ways, success is a job well done. You believe personal interaction and connection matter most - especially when it comes to achieving your health and fitness goals. Your commitment and intense loyalty fuel you to finish what you start with style and grace.
Workout Style Tips:
Exercise is an essential part of your weekly, well-being routine. Schedule your workouts and don’t overcommit for the week ahead.
Nutrition is about ensuring health and happiness for your family and yourself. Plan out your meals and think about how to create a time to engage in healthy ways.
Goal Setting is about the next week. You’ll be successful by mapping out the next 7 days and how consistency will help you achieve your long-term goals.
DEVELOPERS
For the DEVELOPERS out there who focus on activities you are passionate about and an end goal of enjoying the moment, success is a meaningful experience. You believe that life is a journey that we’re all on together and tomorrow can and should be better than today. Your enthusiasm for the moment and need for personal growth pull you towards your future goals.
Workout Style Tips:
Exercise is a big part of your social life that you approach with fun and spontaneity. Sign-up for group activities or commit to workout with a friend for added accountability.
Nutrition is about having healthy alternatives and choices at arms reach. Fight the urge to cheat on your diet by planning ahead to keep healthy food options close by.
Goal Setting is about today. You’ll be successful by creating a healthy rhythm of life that incorporates daily physical activities and the freedom to choose.
DESIGNERS
For the DESIGNERS out there who focus on mastering new skills and an end goal of achieving innovative results, success is about personal mastery. You believe that there is always a better way of doing something and desire to know the theory behind whatever product or program you are using. Your innate curiosity and personal imagination challenge conventional wisdom, especially when it comes to a health and fitness routine.
Workout Style Tips:
Exercise is about maximizing your effectiveness and ingenuity. Look for flexible fitness programs or facilities that enable you to learn a new skill or that’s tied to a bigger goal outside of just breaking a sweat.
Nutrition is about fueling your mind and body. Experiment with different foods and diets to see what your body best responds to for optimal performance.
Goal Setting is about this year. You’ll be successful by creating a healthy rhythm of life that connects with the bigger picture of what you’re hoping to achieve in the year ahead.
Knowing how you’re wired to workout is essential if you hope to become the best version of yourself.
One size does not fit all when it comes to your personal health and fitness.
You can take the next step and get in the best shape of your life by adapting your health and fitness goals to fit your personal Workout Style.
Why I’m Shutting Down My Gym
The need to recharge is a necessity, not a luxury.
We all understand that principle but do we actually take action on it?
A few months back, my wife began to notice our team seemed a little tired. After speaking with everyone, we discovered a break was needed.
Not an optional break - a mandatory break.
So that's exactly what we're doing here at Avenu Fitness. We're powering down from July 1-5th to reboot and refresh.
Sometimes we need someone else to give us permission to take time for ourselves:
So here's permission to take some time off from training. Enjoy the chance to slow down and refresh.
Thanks for being a community that knows training matters, but life goes beyond the workout.
Here’s an email I sent out to my community of clients to explain the much needed R&R.....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Every night we plug in our phones to recharge from all the day's usage. Sometimes we have an emergency where we have to find a charger halfway through the day. Sometimes we could go days without a recharge.
The same holds true with our lives. The need to recharge is a necessity, not a luxury.
At times we need to pull away early in our day because we missed out on a solid nights sleep because our minds were preoccupied with some daily stress. Other times the kiddo's want to jump into bed with you somewhere around 2:00am for no apparent reason.
Either way, we need to pull away from the daily grind to recharge our batteries so we can operate at our absolute best - we can give more of ourselves to our loved ones - we can be fully present in our daily lives vs dreaming of checking some zzz's later on that night.
We take this so seriously, we want to make sure we're leading by example.
Since January 1, we've served you and our awesome community over 17,515 times in our unique IN30 training program! (not to sure about the wording here).
When our alarm goes off at 4:00am, we typically hit the ground running until 6:30pm. It adds up, but I know it's self inflicted!!!! We love what we do though.
But at times, instead of just plugging in to recharge, you need to shut down to completely reboot.
At that's exactly what we're doing here at Avenu Fitness. We're powering down from July 1-5th to reboot so we can come back...
redefined with our new unique look and messaging
refocused to serve you even better
refreshed to continue making living fit convenient and attainable
Basically we're giving you permission to take some time off from training. Take some time to sleep in. Take some time to go eat breakfast or sit down for dinner with the family. Heck, even go play at the park with the kids. What ever you decide to do, enjoy the chance to slow down.
For a small period of time, forget worrying about measuring your waist or biceps. Simply focus on the quality of life you can live by unplugging for your daily routine and slowing down to enjoy the friends, family and loved ones around you.
Hope you enjoy the R&R

Redefining How To Talk Food w/ Your Clients
To burn fat, build a healthier body and create lasting change, people need to lift weights, condition their bodies, sleep more and eat real food.
How does the fitness industry address these four elements?
Lift weights and conditioning—Done. They are what we do best.
Sleep—It's not cool to talk about sleep, right?
Food—At best, we take an artificial approach.
The Artificial Food Approach
Health clubs typically surround clients with supplement tablets, selling the idea that all they need are certain vitamins to crack the fat loss code. Next, we tell them to eat energy bars between meals to keep their metabolism burning. Then, we tell them that they need protein shakes after their workouts to feed their muscles. Finally, we sell them 10-day fat loss fixes by pimping out the latest fat burner booster for their post workout nutrition.
Does this really create change? Short term: Yes. Long term: No.
These quick fixes are tools used to grow a bottom line, not help our clients lose their bottoms. Artificial fixes can't and won't trump good habits and healthy behaviors when it comes to food. Poor nutrition habits around eating fake food are what packed on the fat and led to poor health in the first place.
A Shift in Thinking
It's not all doom and gloom. Some facilities are trying to teach proper nutrition by:
Partnering with local farms and community-supported agriculture (CSAs) to make it easier to find and buy high-quality, real food by hosting community pickups at their clubs.
Building kitchens at their facilities to teach simple cooking classes and help clients become comfortable preparing home-cooked meals again.
Providing avenues for community recipe sharing among clients.
Hosting education sessions with local farmers and local restaurant chefs.
Allowing clients to share their struggles and triumphs in their battle with food.
What if these offerings became the norm at fitness facilities? What if we changed lives by teaching our communities about the importance of eating real food instead of just teaching them about bench presses and pushing artificial fixes.
As soon as everyday prospects become paying clients, they become a responsibility of our facilities. They are entrusting us to steer them toward a better version of themselves by measuring the quality of their life, not just their waistline and biceps.
The First Step
What do we recommend besides an extra day of cardio to burn fat? How do we show clients we care what caused that five-pound weight gain over the holidays? How can we lead our clients to achieve the results they signed up for in the first place? Evaluate your nutrition strategy:
How many real ingredients are in the energy bars you sell?
If you have a vending machine, how many of the products in it are processed, diet or fat-free?
Have you reviewed your snack bar menus lately to ensure they are healthy?
Do the smoothies include real fruit?
We should serve our communities by offering them products and services that embody true health and nutrition rather than just paying lip service to that idea in order to sell a membership, training session or supplements.
Our industry has the opportunity to affect millions of lives daily by sharing the importance of eating real food. You can start that with a simple evaluation of your nutrition strategy. What are you doing to spread the word?
Fly Your Fitness Business to New Heights
Lately you’ve been dreaming up how you can make your fitness business more attractive to the community.
Your head is up in the clouds and you are watching ideas fly by like jets.
What if I sent a jumbo airliner right your way?
If you are looking for your gym to be a one stop shop for health and wellness, then I suggest you hop on board.
This baby will turn your gym into Cheers. Just without Cliff, Norm, Sam, alcohol….okay what I meant to say is that your gym can be that place people won’t mind spending their time (and money) at.
Build up an unparalleled arsenal of services that no fit business in your area has. Bring in dieticians, chefs, food businesses, and more that make your gym THE PLACE to be.
Get wild.
Partner up with a food truck to set up shop outside your place for people to grab a bite to eat after their workout. Buddy up with a local barista to bring in their coffee set up to slang caffeinated goodness inside your gym.
Oh the places you can go!
There is unlimited potential of what you and people/ businesses you associate with are capable of. You bring in a different focus of health to community with food and food products.
The limiting factor is what you build in your own mind. Fear, skepticism, and procrastination will prevent you from taking your business to the next level.
Fear of how your clients will view the food.
Skepticism of if you can find a vendor/ food truck that will take some of their time and be a part of this.
Procrastination that results from the fear and skepticism.
Kick all that in the mouth and just do it. Make that call to a local quality food truck. Tell your clients. Feed them well, train them well and they will love you forever.
Quit watching the jets fly by and hop on the airliner before it’s too far out of reach.
The Unknown’s of 30 minute training
Why do we behave like church mice when confronted with the unknowns of 30 minute training?
We become scared of what our clients might say.
We scurry away quickly to even entertaining the idea of trying something new.
We make choices that don’t align with our true character and hide behind other trainers ideas and follow their actions to stick with the standard 60 minute session - all not to disrupt the status quo.
But when we get comfortable with our fear, when we face it head on - the world opens up with possibility when we begin exploring the 30 minute model:
We can impact more lives on a daily basis
We can increase our productivity, while actually training less
We can incorporate the basics of living fit (sleeping more, eating real food, training less) back into our training
We can innovate the basics in creative way that reignites a drive back into our career
We can impress upon our clients that Less is Truly More
We can improve our own lives by gaining more free time back into our day - while being able to still making a living training in 30 minute blocks.
How to determine your hourly rate
The fitness industry standard is to automatically discount our services the more sessions a client invests in. Typically, a package of…
10 for $50 per session
20 for $45 per session
30 for $40 per session
Ask yourself this:
Do you offer less value per session the more a client trains with you?
Or do you offer the same, if not better, value for them investing longer in your leadership and accountability?
Most of us would choose the latter. Yet most of us still continue to discount our value the more sessions a client invests in.
Sometimes it helps to look at this from an outsiders perspective:
If you go to McDonalds 3 times a week for a month (12 trips) to purchase a Happy Meal, do they give you a discount?
Nope. So does McDonalds value their Happy Meal more than you value your time?
I hear the cries: “But everybody discounts their services. It’s always been that way.”
I say: Why follow the crowd and put less money in your pocket? Challenge the status quo when it comes to valuing your time. A true fitness professional invests the WOW factor into each session and should be compensated comparably.
How? By determining your hourly rate.
If you want to make $100,000 a year working 40 hours a week for 50 weeks a year (2 weeks of vacation) you’d have to generate $50/hr every working hour.
For you overachievers looking to become the top earners in the industry, here are some bench marks:
Income Goal / 2,000 Hours
$100,000 = $50/hr
$250,000 = $125/hr
$500,000 = $250/hr
$1,000,000 = $500/hr
Knowing you have to produce $50 an hour even when you’re replying to clients emails, designing programs, marketing your services and various other admin duties may cause you to reconsider discounting the time you actually spend in the trenches training clients.
It may cause you to plan out your days differently.
It may cause you to invest every minute differently.
It may cause you to ask yourself this profound question as you waste time doing no productive work:
Would I pay someone $50 to do what I’m doing now?
So where do you start? How do you make the change in your business to a flat rate per session after years of operating differently?
It starts with one small step to ask yourself this:
Why do YOU value your time?
Very open ended, but it’s deep. It’s hard to wrestle with why others should value your time.
Once you’ve taken the time to answer honestly - not just because you’re certified, experienced, motivational, bubbly, hard-nosed, inspirational, or super fit - you’ll begin to feel the conviction in your heart to make a change to your current sacred cow of discounting your time.
