“Brown Bark,

Yet I lack color.

You see my branches,

My leaves...

But the roots

You’ll never see.

They water me

With hatred.

And up I sprout

into the shadows

of a forest.”

"People would say that my hair was "too crazy" for work and constantly suggested that I straighten it. It hurt because this is my natural hair! It's such an extension of myself and where I come from and they wanted me to conceal that. It probably hurt even more because I knew that for years I did conceal it...with straighteners and flirting with the idea of a Brazilian blowout. It took me a long time to find strength and confidence, not only in my hair, but what my hair represents...it took me a long time to love my brown skin.”
