Driving my grandma home from Christmas t my house I couldn't help but think of physics. At the top of the hill I had so much potential energy and at the bottom it had all been converted to kinetic energy or lost as heat!
A real life example of some elastic (but not perfectly elastic because perfection is impossible) collisions.
I have very little patience. Cleaning up wrestling mats requires a lot of patience. I HATE cleaning up mats. Today we were cleaning up and I stood behind the mat and tried to push it forward. Emphasis on the "tried." even though the mat was on wheels, it wasn't moving. I pushed as hard as a could, practically bursting the veins in my head. Angrily I looked under the mat at the wheels and saw a strap under one of the wheels. I removed the strap and moved that god forsaken mat. But then I was thinking how much damage can ONE strap on ONE of the eight wheels really do? But it's actually a lot. Friction be the answer. The coefficient of friction between the wheels and the floor are relatively low which makes it relatively easy to push the 400 pound mat around. The coefficient of friction between the strap and the floor are is much much greater. More friction, more difficult to move. Case and point... I still hate moving mats

This video displays several pendulums, each of different lengths, resulting in visual patterns. Each pendulum conserves energy throughout the ball’s path. When the ball is at one of the ends of its path, its potential energy is a maximum and its kinetic energy is a minimum. At the center of the path, the potential energy is a minimum and the kinetic energy is a maximum. The kinetic energy in the middle of the path = the potential energy at the end of the path = the total energy in the system. The fact that the pendulum’s return to starting position and the original pattern shows that both energy and momentum were conserved.
Nice video. However, keep in mind that energy is not always conserved, it can be lost in the form of heat through friction or other ways such as sound.

So yesterday at a wrestling tournament I was reminded of mr. Love. Wait that sounded wrong... I thought of physics. (ah thats better)... In one of my matches I lifted a kid up and slammed him down on the mat. I find it hard to believe that even though I was expending so much energy I wasn't doing any work holding that 170 pound, angry, sweaty kid above my head but I wasn't. Work is force times distance, so since I was just holding him above my head, making the distance 0, the amount of work I was doing, which would be in joules, was 0. So in reality I wasn't doing work in the physics sense of the word, but I was "doin work" in the modern sense of the word.

Today I learned that the equation for kinetic energy is equal to force times distance. It’s hard to make the connection between these equations, but physics is awesome like that. Also, the answer to number 17 was 50 newtons…

This is after yash did some serious work. He traveled 16.3 feet up stairs. By multiplying his weight in newtons by the distance travelled, divided by the time it took him to travel you find his newton pounds per second. If you divide that by 550 you can find his horse power. Wow man. Too much awesome knowledge!
Today in class we learned about work, which is defined as Force times distance. The units for work are Joules, a combination of Newtons and meters. In this picture, Liao Hui, a world class weightlifter for China isn’t doing any work because the weight is not moving so the distance is zero. However, for him to get that weight to this point he needed to work. It can be calculated if we knew the mass of the weights, as well as the distance it traveled from the ground to just above his head.
That's crazy. It looks like he's doing work, or maybe he stubbed his toe and that's why he's screaming, but it looks like holding that up would be work. But it's not! Physics is straight wild

The other day in physics we learned that if and object has mass (all objects do) and it's velocity is changing, acceleration must be present, and thus a force must also be acting on the object over some period of time. This holds true in the fact that acceleration is a change in velocity and a change in velocity times mass would result in a change in momentum. Not to mention all this is equal to impulse too! There's like 9 ways to solve every problem basically!
Last night when hanging out with b-rhymez physics impacted my life once again. I found myself in a boiling fit of rage and in anger, punched my two fists together (stupid? Yes. Necessary? Also yes.) I found that my fists bounced off each other but not nearly at the same speed they crashed together which is what they would do provided they have roughly the same amount of mass and had the same velocity before impact AND were perfectly elastic. However, my hands are not perfectly elastic so the kinetic energy had to go somewhere. Unlike a car, my fists did not become misshapen, however the kinetic energy found it's way into the little bit of flesh and bones in my knuckles. This is evident because my knuckles are sore today and maybe even slightly bruised if you look closely. There's no escaping physics, even in a fit of rage!
This video shows an astronaut dropping a feather and a hammer at the same time on the surface of the moon. The video supports the notion that all objects accelerate due to gravity at the same rate, regardless of mass. On earth, the hammer would fall first because of air resistance, but there is no air on the moon, so only gravity is present. These objects fall more slowly than they would on earth because the moon’s gravitational force is weaker than earth’s. This is because the moon has less mass, and gravitational force and mass are directly related.
I think its crazy how it's not only the hammer and feather falling to the moons surface but the moon is being pulled upward (in the words of the great Martin Mahoney: ever so slightly).
