Well shelter is a basic need, and would at the very least allow them a place where they can get back on their feet. Food water and shelter are necessary for a healthy body and psychology. There’s also the fact that they’re people too, and a little help goes a long way in making a decent community. There’s plenty of reasons

Just got done reading an interesting article about how language affects the way we think and perceive the world. There were some interesting examples. Like how in Spanish, the word bridge is masculine, while in German, it is feminine. So native speakers of these languages describe the same thing differently. Spanish speakers will comment on how strong or sturdy a bridge is, while German speakers will comment on how elegant or beautiful it is. Another example that blew my mind was the Guugu Yimithirr language. So, most languages, including English, use an egocentric type of directional language (turn right, left, behind, in front.) these directions are relative to you as a person. Well, the Guugu Yimithirr language uses fixed geographical directions (North, East, South, and West) no matter the context. If you were to put an English speaker and a Guugu Yimithirr speaker in the same hotel, and put them in rooms opposite sides of the hallway from each other, the English speaker will see the exact same room (that person will see the desk to the right of blah and the closet in front of blah) but the Guugu Yimithirr speaker will see a COMPLETELY different room because the bed will be facing south instead of north, and all of that jazz. And the article went on to state how speakers of this language might even have a lower sense of egotism, because directions do not revolve around them, they’re just another part of the picture. Really fascinating. It made me think really long about language imperialism and how rapidly we’re moving towards a world that deals almost exclusively in English. It makes me sad to know that we’re losing completely different ways of thinking. Completely different perspectives, just gone. I guess that’s why I always get upset when people say that language imperialism isn’t so bad, and that English as a language is connecting people together. The world is a great big place, with completely different perspectives, and I think the fastest way to kill a culture is to take away the language, because not only are you taking away a method of communication, but a way of thinking.

We know Kat broke it off with Tia and Adena, to find herself (sigh!). Do you think TBT will have Kat date men again? Just don’t see what else writers could come up with in her love dept. Other than our major wish to reunite with Adena, of course.

I’d be surprised if she had any kind of arc with a guy next season. I think the whole point is that she needs to not have a love life right now and focus on herself. Or, I guess more accurately, Kat has some stuff that she needs to work through that she’s used recent romantic relationships to avoid working through. And she knows she needs to avoid that crutch. I get the sense that Kat was someone who always sort of dissociated from her insecurities and didn’t really acknowledge them in her life. And then she ends up in this romantic relationship with Adena who really breaks her walls down and Kat is finally recognizing some things she feels insecure and uncertain about, but Adena makes her feel amazing so it’s ok. She doesn’t have to confront her feelings about not being good enough and her fears that despite caring so passionately she won’t actually make any kind of difference or mark on the world. She doesn’t have to confront those feelings, until everything flips, and Adena becomes someone who reinforces everything Kat fears rather than the person who protected her from those feelings. And then she found Tia, who believed Kat is all the things she wants to be but doesn’t feel like she is, especially after things end with Adena—a badass confident woman who’s going to change the world. And the city council race and the romantic relationship that evolved from it all kind of represented the same thing. And it worked as a great crutch, until she lost.

I think Kat recognizes she’s so close to believing in herself in a new and important way. Believing that she’s enough and she’s going to make her own sort of mark, and that it doesn’t have to mean changing who she is or what she enjoys doing. But she can’t derive that from how Adena sees her, or Tia for that matter; the source has to be herself. Kat has to believe she’s inspiring because she knows she is, not because Adena or Tia said so.

So I think she’s going to be single while this happens. In practical terms, this means Kat likely finally having multiple substantive career episodes that are separate from her romantic life. And once Kat feels like she’s gotten to that place within herself that she needed to give herself the chance to reach, she’s going to pursue Adena again. I don’t necessarily think it’s going to take that much time. Like Kat said in 3x10, she’s so close. Close enough that she can’t give up and give in now. She has to see this through.
