I seem to have a running theme of glowy characters, and I love water and Paladin themes! It’s been so fun to work on these!

“Success achieved by the most contemptible means cannot but destroy the soul…. It helps to cover up the inner corruption and gradually dulls one’s scruples, so that those who begin with some high ambition cannot, even if they would, create anything out of themselves.”
— Emma Goldman, “Intellectual Proletarians”

"For silence is not God, nor speaking; fasting is not God, nor eating; solitude is not God, nor company; nor any other pair of opposites. He is hidden between them, and cannot be found by anything your soul does, but only by the love of your heart. He cannot be known by reason, he cannot be thought, caught, or sought by understanding."

"The Cloud of Unknowing (Middle English: The Cloude of Unknowyng) is an anonymous work of Christian mysticism written in Middle English in the latter half of the 14th century. The text is a spiritual guide on contemplative prayer. The underlying message of this work suggests that the way to know God is to abandon consideration of God's particular activities and attributes, and be courageous enough to surrender one's mind and ego to the realm of "unknowing", at which point one may begin to glimpse the nature of God."

Hmm. You know, I’m going to use my platform here to be a little self serving. You see, I’m finally giving Warframe a proper try and finding I really enjoy it. And while simple compared to other frames, I am enjoying playing with the Rhino warframe enough that I’m willing to buy the Rhino Prime Set. But I’m unfamiliar with the trade process in warframe since it doesn’t seem to have an auction house equivalent. So, ideally, I’d like to find someone who has what I’m willing to buy and the patience to guide me through it, if possible.
Here it is! The Oath of Whimsy!
You know, I think that’s the first time I’ve seen an ultimate ability include a superior version of Legendary Saves
The tenets of the Oath of The Sun have spurred grossly incandescent champions to action since the stars first lit the night sky.
This oath emphasizes the importance of light, warmth, and burning away rot so new life may grow.
The Sun Burns. No matter which shadows the forces of evil hide within, by the holy light of the stars you must burn them out.
The Sun Rises. You are the star by which common folks are guided, your fire warms the hearts of others to the point of ignition, by your example others also kindle themselves.
The Sun Sets. In inaction a stellar champion fades away, all stars must one day burn out, may your sun set for a greater dawn.
I made an Oath of Whimsy for paladins, I’d like to share the link if you want to take a look at it.
Sure. I’m curious how strong an oath you can make that way
Fair play, I figured the secrecy as both a shield and... in part, a test.
If I may go off on a side tangent, one thing I particular dislike is purposefully building a loophole so you can claim you're still "playing fair". Rules as written instead of intended, essentially.
I figure if there's someone who knows all the details of the oath, its likely higher ups who don't get out much. Say... a pali who's too old to keep fighting, so they train the new generation instead. The goal of this would be less about "here's what each rule is" and "here's the reason we do so-and-so"
Of course their patron diety or what-have-you certainly knows the whole thing too, but that's probably obvious.
Rules as written is how Hell works, so unsurprising you dislike that.
That said, I think there’s merit in the idea, just try to keep it simple. If the truth of the oath is mired in endless complexity to keep it secret, something of the key message is at risk of being lost in the process.
If, after all, the original mission statement is to adhere to decency and goodness without getting trapped in the terminology, the opposite is also true, where without any kind of open terminology on what is good and how to be good, anyone can say that they are that without a standard to uphold themselves by.
You know? I like the idea of 'em facing old ones and obscuring what their memory of the oath is to stop it being messed with, and I've got another idea of who this order could face.
Justice is blind, the written law may have exceptions and loopholes, but again justice itself cares little for that. Those who try to exploit those rules for their own gain... say, Devils, will quickly learn how fast that plan falls apart when nobody knows the rules themselves.
Oh what's that? You're trying to read an oath to force it to break? That's cool now check this out.
Intriguing, but has its risks. While frustrating to a devil, the oath may lose its power if it is truly nullified from the sense of awareness. Someone, somewhere, knows if it is being upheld, otherwise any sword slinger could claim to be oath keeper if they never to have to prove what oaths they keep. I prefer the secrecy of the Oath as a shield. Else you’re too comfortable with perhaps using it as a weapon.
it is so funny when you realize that by drow standards, especially drow noble house and ESPECIALLY Baenre standards, Minthara is the woke liberal
She is willing to work with men in leadership positions even post-mind control and she will actually compliment and admire their tyrannical prowess
She will argue that the refugees in Baldur’s Gate should be enslaved because it’s practical and better for them that way, not because they’re weak lesser races that deserve to be subjugated
Like she probably gets called a libtard at Spider Thanksgiving every year while all her relatives are trying to poison each other
I apologize, I needed to draw an image to this.
Hey pali, concept for ya.
Paladin order that purposefully tries to forget the details of their oath, under the belief their god would prefer someone who does right because its right, rather than just 'cause they gave their word they will.
Said diety is a little confused, but gets the spirit.
Hmm. At first blush, kind of silly, doesn’t sound like it would last a generation if no one is remembering critical details of to whom, what, and why Oaths are being sworn.
But!
What about a setting where you deal with hostile forces capable of making memory and physical observation of the here and now untrustworthy, like an Old One whose physical presences causes madness, alteration of history, and the way physics and the environment works. In that case, an Oath capable of being upheld when its keeper cannot trust their own preception and memory would a be pivotal force to utilize against eldritch forces, the fixed point of light, the northern star, to guide any oathkeeping paladin through madness and unreality.
Hi pally. Just curious about your thoughts on Minthara. I really like her, but I feel like she's a bit too pro world domination for me. I still save her, of course, but still.
Me personally, if find her interesting, and a compelling performance by Emma Gregory. Character wise, she’s a deliberate contrast on what to expect from Paladins, but still has convictions and values, even if they are oft antagonistic ones. She’s also largely “evil” in the ambitious and ruthless sense, rather than any of the truly heinous characteristics I would find abhorrent. Her ambition is vast and she is slow to extend empathy to outside her circle of worthiness, but these are traits that are hardly scorned if applied in a healthy manner. A desire to lead and being loyal to your companions is another way of looking at it.
That said, if you feed her excess, then they will only grow, as excess does.
Ultimately though, my favorite part about Minthara, or at least, the bit of her writing and character that sneaks past my objective thoughts to hit me where I live, is that especially in the Dark Urge playthrough, she see’s the darkness within her paramour and does not fear it or become repulsed by it. As someone who often wrestles with my own shadow and how I feel about myself, a lover who sees that same darkness and continues to love me unconditionally, or sees that same darkness as beautiful, touches me where I live.
