Happy belated, Scorsese. It's important to remember that when he set out to make films about Italian Americans in the 1960s, his people still hadn't been welcomed, without reservation, into this country. Despite its violence and misogyny, Scorsese's work—and Coppola's simultaneously—presented anti-heroes that Americans of all cultures and races could identify with. That's the power of film: to show common struggles, and in-so-doing bridge divides of racism and miscommunication.
