Silences tend to be the size of the spaces in which they happen. The silence in an empty church is larger than the silence you’d find in a dark closet. But sometimes a silence is the wrong size. The silence between two people in bed should be small and warm, but sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes it’s too big. Larger than it should be. But that’s not nearly as disturbing as a silence that lasts longer than it really did. What I mean is, those silences that you can still feel even after they’ve been broken. Like someone starts talking but the silence doesn’t end. The words just float on the surface of the silence, which is somehow still there, filling up the space.
