‘Huddled together for warmth on a cold morning, these juvenile numbats (affectionately known as numbubs) survey their surroundings for any potential threats. With introduced species such as the feral cat and European red fox to contend with, their formative years are spent learning to blend in with their woodland surroundings, always alert to danger.’ Wiilman country, Dryandra, Western Australia.

Rabbit or squirrel? Neither: It's the southern viscacha (Lagidium viscacia)! This gregarious rodent lives in colonies of up to 70 individuals and inhabits mountainous areas in South America. It’s an agile climber that can be found at altitudes as high as 16,000 ft (5,000 m). Because its habitat is sparsely vegetated, this herbivorous critter dines on whatever it can find, including mosses, lichens, and grasses.

As today is the Fourth of July, here is “Anthem,” often performed on national holidays for it expresses one’s love of country, not the government. It is beautiful to hear any time.
From the Broadway musical, “Chess,” with music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA, and lyrics by Tim Rice.
