~Here~
I have pictured us thousands of times
And in each time I see the light in the space between us
I see us then
Ripples of heat from the desert
Barely touching until we reach the cool, darkened
rooms of hotels whose names we have long forgotten
We peel off the layers of unnecessary clothing
sometimes slowly
Sometimes we undress each other
but mostly rip through the cloth hindrances
We leave no light or space between us
I see us after
sometimes in another life
tending to dark haired little ones
I watch us from the outside
exist in a world of our own
talking and laughing together
The glow of the waning daylight warms the room
and the spaces between us
A toddler girl colors at the dining room table
you walk by and tickle her just before
you kiss my neck
I am making our familyβs favorite meal
A little boy runs swiftly after the cat we have
we both say βslow downβ
He stops for a moment
just long enough to appear regretful
We kiss
He runs off in the direction of the cat
I turn down another street in the night
It leads to a long and bumpy dirt road
I hear your voice
I see us standing at a sliding glass door
and you hold me from behind
We watch the sun set over an empty field
and trees that have no leaves
You tell me you love me
My body fits into yours
I tell you that you are my everything
We talk and laugh about our forever
and what we plan to do together
Despite time and distance, we are essentially the same
We murmur to each other about our younger selves
We still crave the honesty of shedding our clothes
but now it is more deliberate
Thoughtful
Treasured
We care nothing of the light or space that may exist
We are finally here
This is the only version of us that matters
