Sorry I have disappeared!
Meet Peter wabbit ❤️
Sorry for lack of posts everyone! I recently took in a cresty! As you can see, blogging has become harder due to her claiming my keyboard... What animal should I blog about next?
Having a pet is so weird. Like neither of you speak each other’s language and yet you form some strong bond by rubbing against each other and sleeping together and you might accidentally kick them in the face or step on their tail once in a while but at the end of the day you two are best buddies from entirely different species.
Let's talk turtle care and shell rot! First let me introduce, Happy, My African Sideneck aquatic turtle (who's featured in the photos)!
Did you know that turtles REQUIRE UVB lighting, a heat bulb, a floating dock or climb to get out of the water, 40 gallon tank and up, an air pump, filtration, calcium, and live food more often then pellet? Yes! This all madatory for a happy turtle life! Turtles are sensitive to obesity, shell rot, and metabolic bone disorder from poor care.
Metabolic bone disorder happens from a lack of D3 and Calcium. This is easily given to turtles by water drops, vitamins, or cuddle bones. They have cuddle bones specifically for turtles, but some bird brands are the same thing. MBD can also happen if your turtle is not active enough. Provide plenty of space and this will be avoided, but also keep in mind that you will need the D3 and calcium to have a fully healthy turtle!
Did you know that over feeding your turtle makes their organs push against their shell? It can cause ruptures or cracks in the shell from strong pressure for long periods of time. Usually you will see people feed their turtles a diet of plain pellet, twice a day. Did you know that turtles eat meal worms, crickets, minnows, and commet fish? Live food is always better, but you can mix pellet and live things. Just limit pellet, even if it's your turtles absolute favorite.
Now, let's talk shell rot! Basically shell rot is a bacterial or fungal infection of the shell. It can happen in aquatic and land turtles/ tortoises, most often aquatic. Shell rot is often easy to spot. Keep an eye out for mushy spots, exsposed tissue, foul smelling shell, or parts of the shell breaking away. In the photo above is when Happy first came to me. He had shell rot. Being too poor to afford treatment right away, I bought API TURTLE FIX. Which helped calm down the infection. A better and faster solution is letting betadine dry onto the infected spots twice daily until it heals. Also keep in mind that having a proper doc to let your turtle FULLY dry on is mandatory and will help avoid rot.
Meet Piglet! (Fair warning, I have 11 pets)
Good night or... er morning! Time to sleep! It is 2:00 am currently where I am at! What about you??
Recommendation post!
I highly recommend the ZooMed Betta Mirror for all bettas! Did you know that allowing your betta 5-10 minutes of this mirror a day promotes healthy behavior and gives your betta a complete work out? You can get these mirrors pretty cheap too!
Meet Clover 🐸☘️ Clover is a pacman frog. Did you know that Clover, being a female pacman frog, can or will grow about 7 inches wide?
Pacman frogs require more then just a tiny plastic tub! Although they can survive some neglectful housing situations, keep in mind that the bigger the better. Yes they are pretty lazy animals, but require at least a 10 gallon (when young) and a 20 gallon (adult). Did you know that they also require a heat bulb that's constantly on and a uvb for 12 hrs a day? Again, these frogs require way more then a cold tub!
Other requirements for these frogs is misting with declorinated water twice daily, calcium supplements, and multi vitamins. These frogs absorb water through their skin, so misting is crucial. It also helps aid in their ability to burrow. Why calcium and multivitamins? These items aid in avoidance of metabolic bone disorder. A sign of this disorder is splayed out back legs.
Wanna learn more about these frogs? Let me know an I'll do a more exstensive post! C:
She’s so good!!
My cat Boo, aka Booger, getting comfy😍
Let's talk bettas!
Did you know that bettas need to be housed in at least a 2.5-5 gallon tank? Yep! Those bowls need to go! Did you know that bettas require heat in their water for sufficient living? Did you know that bettas require more then pellet food?
Let's talk about this! I would like to start by talking about heat requirements. Bettas require at minimum a water temperature of 72-82 degrees. They originally come from Thailand where they live in swampy, marshy, pools of water. So heat makes sense!
Secondly, let's discuss feeding! Commonly bettas are fed pellet their entire life, but let's be honest. Boring and totally not healthy! Bettas require frozen bugs and other frozen things. Like blood worms and brineshrimp. Be sure to supply these 1-2 times weekly in place of a serving of pellet. Then continue with feeding pellet the rest of the week. Now, if you want your water quailty to stay cleaner, consider feeding your betta every other day. It's fine to do, but I however feed my betta each day.
Lastly, let's discuss fin rot! Ahhhh the big betta fish scary! Fin rot is a baterial infection in which the bacteria eats at your bettas fins and skin. This is most common in bowl kept bettas who are also housed in dirty water. Yuck! To prevent this health issue you can practice good house keeping for your little swimmer. Filters can be added in tanks 3.5 and up. Why 3.5 and up? Well if you have too small of a space for your betta with a strong filter, it can suck in their fins and damage them or kill them.
Recommendations:
If fin rot appears, try API BETTA FIX. I use it for all of my betta rescues!
Thanks for reading!
(The betta in this post is a recent rescue. His name is Sr. Glubberson!)
