this thing…stab of pain in my stomach :’(
A frown settled over his face as he noticed she was crying. If the tables had been turned he would have been the same, but it didn’t hurt the pain any less. She was trying because of him. Though, their situation ended up during out for the better. In the original calculations he wouldn’t have made it out alive. “True, that’s why I need ya. To be the hero and save me when I’m bein’ too dense.”
Jemma laughed sarcastically, the tears rolling down her colour worn face as she stroked his cheek softly, shaking her head. "If anyone's going to get the hero label here, it's you Fitz." She smiled sadly down at him, hesitating a moment before she was stretching her body across the bed, careful not to disturb his position as she placed her head against his chest.
"Maybe I should jump in?"
"Yeah"
Fitzsimmons in 1.08 : The Well
A groan of protest left his lips at her words. He didn’t want to sleep. He felt like he’d been sleeping for days. All he wanted was to be able to get up and move around and just be silly. Instead he’d just have to settle for just being able to open his eyes. “No,” he responded his voice hoarse like it had been scratched with sandpaper.
The scientist sighed, shaking her head with a weak smile. "You always were stubborn--" She hadn't realized she'd been crying at first, and when she did, she was quick to wipe away her tears. Though they kept coming. She still couldn't believe this had happened to them. She was just glad that she hadn't lost him.
Clint closed the door a little, hand reaching into his pocket for the hidden dagger he had. “Who are you?” He asked quietly, trying not to let her cute awkwardness deter him. For all he knew, she could be a killer for HYDRA.
He didn’t know what to think anymore, and it killed him.
"My name is Jemma Simmons... I'm an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D not that that really means much these days-- um... sorry, I was uhh.. I was sent under direct orders to gather you and bring you back to the bus... err.. well it's a plane, really-- dunno why we call it a bus, it looks nothing like one. Ahh-- sorry, off topic. I um... I have a badge still if you'd like to see it... and an ID card."
She was just as bad at talking to people she hardly knew as she was at lying. She really needed to talk to Skye about lessons in social interaction. She was a scientist-- she didn't like confrontation of any sort.
He could hear her. That was all that mattered. That meant she had to be alive, right? Though, confusion did strike him as to why then he’d hear her if he was a live. Well, at least if they were in heaven they were still together. Though it would have been nice if heaven took away the ache of having tons of water hit him full force. He let out a gruff noise in response to her voice as his eyes tried to slowly open.
Of course she'd noticed him struggling to open his eyes the moment he thought about it. She shook her head, plopping herself down beside him in his bed, a hand absentmindedly cupping his cheek, her thumb rubbing small circles on his cheek bone. "Don't strain yourself. You're going to be fine but right now-- you just need to rest."
It was strange, how he felt so disconnected, so different despite not even being there to experience it first hand.
Yet all he could do was sit in silence as he tried to contemplate how his life would run now. He was never very good at change, and this was going to be the biggest change of his life.
And all he could do was sit and stare out the window of a motel he had managed to get a room in by scrounging his money together.
It was about the middle of the day when he heard the door knock and Clint waited a few seconds, trying to gather the strength to stand, before moving toward the door and opening it. “Hello?”
Jemma was under orders from Coulson himself to gather the Avengers. At first, she was reluctant. She still didn't think it was a good idea to expose himself, or the fact that they were rebuilding the agency from the ashes. Then, she remembered how long Coulson had gone without being able to speak to anyone, really, because everyone he knew thought he was dead, so she obliged.
With Skye's hacker skills, of course the rag-tag team was able to track down the group, no matter how far they'd gotten. (Romanoff was specifically tricky, but they'd managed.)
Each of them was assigned an Avenger, so here she stood, outside the door of a beaten and worn old motel.
At first, she hadn't expected him to answer, and when he did, she was surprised at how tall he was in person. "Uhm-- Clint Barton, I presume?" Jemma smiled awkwardly. Smooth, Jemma.

"Watch out!"
"You could have been killed!"
"Run! Hurry up, go!"
"Save yourself, I’ll hold them back."
"Leave me here! Go! Hurry! I can handle it."
"I promise I’ll make sure they don’t hurt you."
"They better not have laid a damn finger on you or I’ll [insert threat]."
"I swear, if they so much as breathe next to you, I’ll knock them out.”
"I’m not leaving you here!"
"And let you get yourself killed?"
"Are you crazy?"
"Are you hurt anywhere?"
"I don’t trust him/her. They seem off."
"I’m saying this for your own good!"
"Don’t worry. I’ll protect you."
"I don’t want to lose you! You’re all I have left!"

She'd been beside him that entire day. She hadn't even gone back to her room the night previous, she'd fallen asleep in the chair beside his bed. The events of what had happened were still hitting her rather hard. "Oh Fitz..." She sighed, knowing he probably couldn't hear her. "You're a hero, you know."
She had been sent here for some reason—or maybe she had chosen to come see him, but either way, she was now choosing not to look at him. The pain in her eyes was killing him.
”——Jemma.”
For a moment, she ignored him. But she knew that wouldn't last for long. The next second was a blur for even her. She'd swooshed around and back handed him right across the face. She stood angrily, tears welling up in her eyes. She needed this. She knew she needed this. Of all the people that had gone off on Ward since uncovering him as Hydra, Jemma wasn't one of them. Until now.
"How could you?! You were our friend! You were his friend. He was willing to defend you until his last dying breath and he was the only one who still believed in you. He still had hope for your redemption when everyone else had lost theirs. And now he's lying in critical condition with brain damage thanks to you."
Now she knew she was crying, and honestly, she didn't care. She was also well aware that she'd been screaming.

”In a sense, yes.”
”Ah— I’m Agent Jemma Simmons of S.H.I.E.L.D. I was wondering if you’d come with me? I’m under direct orders to bring you to the hub.” A familiar voice came through on her earpiece. It was Fitz. 'Be careful, Jemma! He's dangerous— I dun want you gettin' hurt.'
"That I am," Steve replied, a small smile appearing, amused. "I… I had heard some news… about Coulson. I just… I had to see it for myself."
Her eyes went wide for a moment before shaking her head and pursing her lips just a bit. "Whatttt...." Her voice hit an octave higher before she could control it. "Y-You mean Phil Coulson? I thought he um....ya know...died during the battle of New York..." Jemma was a terrible liar. And that was especially true when she was already nervous.
