britpoprps writes a guide: if your faceclaim dies.
most people don't like to think about this. but, with the recent deaths of many famous and beloved people, including alan rickman and david bowie, i felt as if this needed to be written. people who use real life faceclaims usually don't think of what would happen if their faceclaim was to die. often, people look down upon using people who are deceased as faceclaims. though this may not happen to you in your streak of roleplaying, here are a few options in the event that your faceclaim passes away. most of this only applies to ORIGINAL CHARACTERS, but i'll address that later.
i. choose a different faceclaim.
this might be a bit of a difficult task, especially if you've become quite attached to your faceclaim, and have used them for a few years. but, out of respect, choosing a different faceclaim for your character would be BEST. there are many faceclaim directories out there, where you can find someone who looked similar to your old faceclaim, or, maybe you'll find someone who suits the character better. i will add a couple of links down below to directories. and, you can always ask a roleplay help blog, like this one, for suggestions. for example, my most used character uses jarvis cocker as a faceclaim. in the event that jarvis cocker passes away, i plan on using ed byrne for him, because they are similar in appearance and in how i imagine the character.
ii. wait.
like many of us, surely you have a few characters that you switch between. or, you have an idea for another one that you've been dreaming up for some time, and you'd like to put them to use. using a different character for a while might be a good option for you, if you're far too attached to your faceclaim to pick a different one, and you don't want to go through a bit of a sad time seeing their face everywhere again. waiting to use the deceased faceclaim could be a good idea. though, you might have to give it a few years before you could return to the character, so, going with suggestion number one is still the best option. that way, you could still play your character, but only the appearance would be different.
iii. exceptions.
there are a couple of exceptions i've seen when writing with a faceclaim who is deceased. one of them is if you are playing a canon character that the faceclaim played in real life. above, i mentioned alan rickman and david bowie. if you're roleplaying severus snape from harry potter, or jareth the goblin king from labyrinth, as common examples that both of those people are well known for, then this may not apply to you, considering you are only working from the canon material. but, if you want to use a different person as a faceclaim, no one is stopping you. another example i've seen is how long the person has been dead. i see many people using old hollywood actors as faceclaims, and they have been dead for over twenty years, maybe more. if the person you want to use as a faceclaim died over twenty years ago, then it might be less controversial to use them than if they had just died a few months ago. but, again, this is all up to your own sense of judgement. it still might be best to just choose a different faceclaim, one who is alive.
