What nicer thing can you do for someone than make them breakfast?

This is treasure. Real life treasure from a bygone era. Today, we found this plain, unassuming wooden box with a handle on top, a latch on the front & a small drawer with a hook closure at the bottom. Howard & I were actually hunting for antique boxes which is the only reason we even saw this thing. We popped it open & inside was a plate of glass with paint swatches on it & a piece of paper beneath it with the colour names written on it. It was sat in a wooden tray that lifted out & beneath it were countless little vials of pigment all with their original labels & cork stoppers, bottles & pots, brushes, tools, repurposed cosmetic containers and a newspaper clipping dated June 29th 1958. This was somebody’s china painting kit. Their entire hobby or livelihood in one little box. I know how valuable my pens and paints and various kit are to me so I can only imagine what this once meant to somebody. The clippings inside the box relate to art competitions & news. I feel almost tearful thinking about who this belonged to & what it meant to them and, although I never knew them & will never know who they were, I feel honoured that it is now in my possession & I will treasure it forever.

Sometimes we expect more from others because we would be willing to do that much for them.
