this is something I’ve been working on for a long time. It’s fiction, but packaged as a memoir. it’s actually based on the true story of my life, but a lot of the details, stories, and people are all made up. here’s my first, very tentative and terrifying to post installment. let me know if you like it and want to hear more. it’s called pieces.

I’ve always liked living in neighborhoods that were a little rough around the edges – not the kind where you’ve got to worry about being the third party in a drive-by, but just a little seedy, mostly poor and black, a dealer on every corner and a runner in every alleyway. My favorite city is New York City. Brooklyn, where I do what I guess counts as living, since I’m not dead yet. On my block, the 7/11 guy knows me by name, and always has a New York Poker scratch off at the ready for me. And if my boyfriend goes for me because I’m too sick to go, he infallibly asks how I’m doing. He knows something is wrong with me – it was obvious just looking at me. That would make most people feel uncomfortable. But it makes me feel strangely more comfortable; it’s all out there, and among people who aren’t getting invited to any Bottle Service blow-outs on Saturday night, they don’t really care. It makes me feel at ease, at home, unjudged and generally accepted. I also carry switchblade that looks like a regular little pink housekey, but flicks out into a three inch blade – a halfway decent weapon and always handy. It’s technically legal, so long as the authorities can’t flick it open with one hand like I can. ���5yDJ��
