@athellamell ASKED ╱ look – athella rolls back his sleeve to see their wound / scar :))))))))) ❜ from ; (accepting).
it is only one scar among MANY, but it is very clearly the newest. raised flesh still pink, though wrinkled and stretched from the healing processes ── natural and not. for the most part, cullen sits perfectly still. he cannot help his CURIOSITY, though, and looks about his shoulder to watch her hands push up a linen sleeve towards the peak of his shoulder. “ i think it’s healed nicely, ” he comments. the large scar arrows through his flesh and follows the curve of his shoulder blade, where it abruptly ends thanks to ─ now severely dented ─ armor. halberds were nasty, meant to hurt and bring down to the mud; cullen remembers his fall and, despite a wounded pride, is thankful to be breathing. which is due in no small part to athella. even if a wound is not fatal, neglect can be a cruel, quiet killer. he takes his hazel eyes away from her fingers to a wooden frame bearing his breastplate and lion-faced helm; damage was plain as day and he grimaces mid reminiscence.
cullen is not one to be taken by surprise quite so easily in combat. he’s handled more than his fair share of battles and one-on-many skirmishes, and learned very quickly the difference between a controlled unit and a wild clammer of foes. though the latter may be thwarted with a coordinated effort, the unpredictability of red templars proved itself that day. a silence descends upon him; contemplative, he looks straight ahead to the old stone wall of his tower room. “ i don't know that i properly THANKED you, lady amell, ” and to her, his eyes avert. how can he thank her in a way that he might deem worthy? perhaps it is just as simple: “ thank you. ”

sheharrowed ╱ TAMARA. ❜
time had certainly not been kind.
or, perhaps, it isn’t time the one to blame, as much as it is the way of the world: the bloody war, the breaches. it seems as if all was a continuous painful cycle: peace regained only to be broken anew and the same tale unfold before her eyes. the world at great peril, whereas the rich and the mighty can seem to care only for themselves. where are diplomacy, solidarity, understanding ? nowhere to be found when all seem to think of their survival alone.
tamara walks into skyhold proud as if she were the queen herself. given the many years of work within the court of denerim, perhaps she could be, but she knows only too well such is not the fate of a mage woman. mage women are demons from birth, are they not? pretty faces awaiting to lull their next foolish victim. oh, maker! if only it hurt less! but, this is no time to think of her personal injury suffered at the hands of the chantry. she has come to speak to the so-called herald of andraste, who has become a force to be considered. this force could be the world’s assurance for life as well as a force to turn the tide between the mages and the templars. and there is no way tamara spears can set aside the grand opportunity to bring the herald to understand the power they hold.
her proud head is turned and, for a moment, her characteristic stern expression begins to wear off, as if a mask were falling to reveal her true face, the gentle one, which she has not shown to many. it seems to her she has seen the face of the man upon whom her glance has been laid, stirring memories so painful to her. perhaps the maker has a sense of irony. perhaps she’s mistaken…
“i take you’re in charge around here?” she asks instead of greeting, her icy glance seeking his own. a confident woman always looks another in the eye, even if within the eyes her unbearable past is reflected, memories she cannot cast aside despite countless failed attempts to do so. “that would be a relief,” she sighs, “it would mean there is, at last, a competent person i can speak to.” her tone is stern, but a smile is spread on her lips. “i am tamara spears, representative of the crown.” the woman offers a polite gesture of her head. “and i come with urgent business. would you be so kind to tell me where can i find the herald of andraste?”
but rigidity follows suit, and he is the PINNACLE of command once more. the lion feels her gaze and this time, does not falter. even when her eyes catch his, even when he does not expect to feel challenged ── instead, a light hand rests upon the pommel of his sword and a second atop those steel-covered knuckles. she is a diplomat; nobility, perhaps? purpose guides her here, whatever it may be, for she is not the frightful come to seek sanctuary. ah, but her stride is lambent, he notices. she bares PRIDE, hubris cloudlike above her head. it almost makes him grimace, were he not in better control of his own expressions, because it is him she approaches. cullen FEELS his hair stand on end, not because of this woman, but because of the familiarity.
it comes as no surprise that she would slight the people under the inquisition banner with underhanded insults, then follow it with a display of manners. representative to the crown? cullen holds his chin only a little high. “ i am in charge of our forces, yes. ” but he is humble, and would not overshadow his fellow advisors, much less the herald. “ the inquisitor, ” he declares, “ is not present at skyhold. you are not the first to seek their aid with urgent business. ” and will not be the last. rifts and demons and red lyrium abound ── everyone, everyone, was otherwise occupied. a wonder it is that cullen would be granted this temporary freedom of walking skyhold’s grounds midst his training soldiers. for a moment, though short, he does look away towards skyhold’s gatehouse. “ but you are a guest, and will be granted the necessities of such during your stay. i cannot provide you with when the inquisitor will return, only assure you that they will. ”
he lingers like this, wanting, wanting to say more; KNOW more. who are you, his tamed stare wanders over the woman’s face, leliana would tell me. “ i am cullen, ” he presses under a guise of politeness (hunting for a NAME), “ commander of the inquisition’s army. you’ll forgive me if i find your presence here somewhat ODD; it is not often representatives of the crown visit skyhold. king alistair usually sends letters. ” if not poorly worded ones, but he would keep those thoughts for himself. he did respect the king, after all, and would not slander him. but there is a hint of doubt in the validity of her words. either this matter is truly severe or this is a front managed to snake past their spymaster’s people. the latter was terribly unlikely, but forgive him he cannot trust something so easily. perhaps that is the uneasiness he feels, cullen surmises, that it is not familiarity but UNEASE.

and he does hesitate, at first, to extend his arm even a little. the mage had sought his comfort, which was not a rare occurrence as of late (from either of them; though, he is much less inclined to do so for sake of following orders), and he wished only to bring such comfort to her. but, as if the sound of his own ARMOR had startled him, cullen recoiled, all but fingertips had brushed tamara’s shoulder. for even that, he would be deep in prayer within the hour. “ you should. . . return to your studies, right? yes. i have to, um, return. to my, my post. ” his rigidity is blatant, vigil forced upon himself ── though trained. indeed a templar, but he is a young one yet, and still feels regret and uncertainty strongly.

magiaburnt ╱ CHAMPION. ❜
Fleeting is the sense of relief that momentarily allows her previously shrunken lungs to breathe once more, albeit with ravenous despair and the awareness that the worst part is yet to come. Truth to be told, Hawke had not expected anything ───── He has always been a difficult book to read, an abstract painting of divergent and contrasting colors that constantly seems to be slithering away and escaping from any kind of proper comprehension, as if the mere idea of being touched or seen by another was more than enough to make his very core tremble and weep in terror.
A nod is thus given in return, for silent is the “thank you” that resides ‘pon the tip of her tongue, destined to quickly die before it can be properly vocalized / Too many times, has the Champion’s tongue become a graveyard of thoughts and feelings and complaints and finally, albeit quite late, she’s starting to realize it. With no words to accompany her actions, she throws a quick glance towards her surroundings before allowing her instincts to guide her towards a more secretive place, far from the hungry ears and prying eyes of any unwanted guest: it would be unfortunately correct to say that even the hardened walls can hear and see, when strictly necessary, here in the Gallows. With each step, the voices of the crowds become number and number until they’re naught but a far away echo that descends ‘pon her ears like a cruel downpour ; her entire attention is focused ‘pon the Templar, ‘pon his deceitfully tranquil movement and his breathing pace, ‘pon the mysterious intentions that he manages to conceal oh so well underneath his heavy armor.
❝ I know that you don’t trust me and I can honestly assure you that, right now, that feeling is mutual. ❞ Suddenly states the Mage, halting her steps and turning towards her interlocutor with a much colder expressionism painted across scarred features ; no one in this wicked city is truly deserving of someone else’s trust. ❝ But maybe you could help me… SOMETHING is happening right in front of my eyes, I can feel it ─── But it doesn’t matter how much I look, I just cannot see what it is. ❞
it does not escape cullen, the watching eyes of his fellow templars, whose gazes cast the moment he thinks to look. were it not for the day’s sun and the gallows’ bustle, his footfalls would have driven him mad. hawke or no, the air is thick, he tastes tension with each breath and feels it amongst the rest of the order. they do not distrust him, no, he has earned his brothers’ and sisters’ loyalty and he KNOWS it. but among them, he’s seeded doubts in his mind’s garden ─ they are devoted to the order and to the maker and to their knight-commander. but he no longer knows to whom the order is devout. maker or meredith; because there are some whose loyalties are blinded. rumors of madness make him sick, but tyranny is palatable. tyranny has festered, because cruelty has become a purpose. in itself, he thinks this heresy. the idea of it, his opinions, he keeps them tucked safe. he is doing the maker’s work. the order is doing the maker’s work. he is doing what he believes to truly be right! . . . dissension is not a phrase he casts so easily, but for all he strives for, he begins to wonder. (IS THIS RIGHT?)
the blur of thought distracts him and a dull ache blooms between his temples when the distance they’ve made allows him to hear his own plate armor rattling against itself. hawke turns her gaze and it is ice; yes, he thinks, i have faith in the order. and so it begins.
“ perhaps you wish a gaze into the circle ─ where you should be ─ to see what ELUDES you so. ” but he breathes in, his eyes do not close but they sullen. there had come a point in time when hawke had aided him. he should not be so jagged. “ my mistrust in you does not guide me entirely, CHAMPION ─ i do not easily FORGET what you’ve done for this city. ” his voice is stern, yes, but there is a hint of softness behind it. “ you must know how your presence incites rebellion amongst the mages and how the templars must act upon it. ” he will not garner sympathy from her.
“ every day, tensions grow. i fear it is only a matter of time before something gives. ”

@shelavellan ASKED ╱ you’re not taking care of yourself, you know. your voice sounds awful. ❜ from ; (accepting).
it catches him off guard, her voice cut cleanly through the shrill cries of blades and pounding shields. in itself, the comment is offhand. cullen, commander of the inquisition’s forces, had wished only to walk the grounds and keep their herald up to date with the comings and goings of military. but he does find, oddly enough, a comfort, if not somewhat of an awkwardness, in her concern of him. “ my━━ my voice? ” had he not noticed the scratch, the dull pitch and nasal inflection? no, there are far worse things he endures to fret over a sore throat and straining voice. cullen’s leather-gloved palm rests upon the side of his throat. “ i’m fine, ” he deflects, “ i’ll feel better when this is all over. ” and it becomes an open door into his mind, one quickly shut when the draft cuts through. “ but until that day comes, your army stands ready, lady herald. ” for his lacking care of self, he shows a remarkable confidence ━━ and perhaps it is a genuine kind. there is a grin upon his lips and his chin is higher, for they stand amongst their soldiers willing to fight and die for their cause. it had been so long since cullen could truly put his faith into something like an idea, if all he has to suffer was a sore throat, then he will gladly pay that price.
