It was unexpected, the way it started. But she couldn’t imagine it any other way.
“God, finally…” she exhales, locking her door and dropping her bag onto the couch. She barely has time to sit before a sharp thud hits her window.
“Jesus—”
The Red Hood is on her fire escape.
Normally, she wouldn’t open her window for a stranger. But there’s blood. And its literally the Red Hood.. controversial or not, he helps people.
So she has to help him too.
She slides the window open, eyes scanning quickly. “Are you dying?”
“No—” He cuts himself off with a cough. Even through the mask, she knows there’s blood.
“Hold on.” She’s already rushing to her bathroom, grabbing her first aid kit.
“I’m fine… I just need to sit for a bit…” The strain in his voice gives him away.
“Stop. You need help.”
“No, I don’t.”
“Fine, no you don’t,” she snaps, already working. “I’m forcing it on you, okay? You’re still big and tough. Just shut up and let me help before you pass out.”
She presses down on the wound, trying to slow the bleeding before wrapping the stab wound.
Even with the mask
(though it was frustrating not being able to read him)
she could tell, he’s grateful.
Out of all the people she could’ve been, she didn’t ask questions, and she let him keep his pride.
“Im gonna get you some water”
But the second she turned away, he vanished. Not noticing until she turned back.
“You’re welcome!” an annoyed shout flowed out her window before she shut it. “Did i just meet the Red Hood” she plops down on her couch muttering to herself. “What a way to start the night..”
She tells herself it doesn’t matter.
But a part of her hopes that he’ll come back. Leave a note. Something.
He never does.
Eventually, it fades from the front of her mind.
But not completely.
It sticks with him.
The fact that she helped with no strings attached. Like he forgot that was even possible. That there was any goodness left in Gotham.
So, as a weird way of thanking her, he adds her walk home to his patrol route.
You know. Just in case.
And yeah… maybe he starts getting gas at the station across from her place.
But that’s just convenience.
Obviously.
About one week later was when their paths finally crossed again. She was on her late night snack run as always.
“Hey Pete!”
she dapped the middle aged man behind the counter making his warm smile emerge.
“Busy today?”
She headed towards the coffee with her eyes practically closed like she owned the place. The man pulled out a bag of chips from the rack next to the counter like he did every night.
“not too bad.. I think the crime is finally goin down this part of the city.”
(Was this partly due to Jason picking up patrols here? Possibly…)
”Yeah? thats good.. city needs a break.” She placed her coffee down, paying the same $7.28 she always did, grabbing the bag with her other hand.
“They talk all this shit on the news but im thinkin these kids runnin round with masks really make a difference..”
“Yeah..” she says softly “yeah i think they do too.. “
“You stay safe out there Aylin..”
“You too.. G’night Petey” she steps out with a wave.
That’s when she sees the bike.
Gorgeous. Black, with red accents.
She crouches slightly, taking a closer look—
Then feels a presence behind her.
Before she can turn—
“That’s my bike.”
She straightens, turning to face him.
Tall. Broad. Built like he could break something without trying.
He sounds like he’s trying to be intimidating, but not very effective.
“S’pretty cool…” she says, unfazed.
But then she notices it.
The flicker in his eyes.
Like he’s seen a ghost.
“What?”
“Nothing.” He goes quiet, like he said too much already.
What the hell is my luck.
(then again, what did he expect being so close to her apartment.)
“Uh… I have to go.”
His voice drops lower as he pulls on his helmet and swings onto the bike.
“Okay…?” she says, watching him.
And just like that, he’s gone.
She blinks after him.
“…Two for two on weird guys.”
