"Iâm okay with that.â Heli swallowed, still considering somehow even though sheâd already said yes to how Charlie and Bronte wanted to bring Drew in. âI didnât think he had limits with you, Bronnie. I mean⊠Not anymore.â She gave her sister a vague gesture to do the twin version of implying that they were living together now and had had a pregnancy scare. âBut if thatâs hot for you guys, Iâm really proud of you.â She wasnât even teasing. Even if she had to crush her jealousy at the notion of having someone who was that clear, that complete in how much they loved her. Even Charlie, who was new at this too, had someone who was willing to try wholeheartedly. And then Charlie said it.
When. Heâs. Sure.
Heli was known for her tantrums. Well, not tantrums exactly. Moments of âbeing obstinate,â as her mother put it (which Heli misheard and repeated as âbeing obstlicanite,â and her parents had figured that was close enough.) Sheâd stamp her foot and set her jaw, and anyone who knew her knew that there was no convincing her to change her mind. Nothing. And yet she couldnât muster ire for Charlie in this moment. Because she was right. Trip wasnât sure. He rarely was. And until recently, Heli always was. But what she was most sure of, always, was him.
Not about his feelings. But of how he made her feel. How his affection made her feel. How his indifference did too. But had it been indifference? Or just fear? Sheâd always been told she was fearless. Maybe in some small way she could show him how to be brave about more than just public sex. Maybe, someday, he would be the boy sheâd never forget again, arguing with his father for her honor as if was something that existed. It made her feel like she was worth protecting. It was why sheâd felt protected, even when Noah was being awful.
Because she knew, if she asked, Trip would be there. Whether they were having sex or not. So maybe, just maybe, she needed to ask.
Her smile wasnât forced. Just fraying around the edges. âWe can go tell Drew. Iâll be okay. Iâve decided it will be, so it will.â She took a deep breath. âThank you.â

Charlie held her breath, her words sounded even harsher after Bronteâs reassurance. Sheâd nodded along eagerly with the possibility Bron presented, but it probably looked fake, like she was just trying to backtrack. She had a feeling it had hit Heli in a way she hadnât planned for, and she wished she could rewind time and say it differently. Charlie wished she could do a lot of things differently.
Then Heli smiled and some of Charlieâs nerves faded, just a bit. It was a fraction of her normal sunshine smile but right now she would take it.
"It will,â Charlie agreed. âYou will. I promise, weâve got you.â She offered her other hand to Heli. âI love you. Youâre so strong and brave, you know?â
Then Charlie remembered something. âBron what did you mean before about bodies walking?â
@brontefusco
Bronte's eyes widened. She was sure her face was beet red, but she couldn't think about that right now. Why on earth had Heli switched to innuendo in the middle of this? Then again, maybe it was a sign that her sister was better. It was a very Heli thing to do. "Um, I meant like... emotional limits. Not...um... that." She prayed that the topic would switch soon, because she did not want to talk about this at all. It was too new and too weird to talk about it. It was private.
Then the topic changed so fast, she felt like maybe she'd hallucinated it. Her heart hadn't stopped rabbiting. "Okay, good. I'll text him for times." This was what she wanted, even if it scared her to pull him further into this. Then again, Heli had revealed a lot to her and Drew the other night, so the pieces were starting to come together.
She almost felt like she could breathe again, but then Charlie asked a question that Bronte wasn't prepared for. She glanced at Heli. "Well..." she knotted her hands together, "We dug up Britt's grave and shewasn'tthere." She gulped. As much as she willed her eyes to look up, she couldn't manage it. "It's empty."
