ARTH-322 Breakthrough Contemporary Artist
For my final piece I decided to put together something that I knew would remind me of this year and what was important to me. Before I started the assignment I had another idea of what I wanted to do, but then I was taking apart my room and saw a lot of little things that I knew would be amazing for this as a keepsake. On my piece I collaged using pictures of my teammates that were hung up on my wall, some little pieces of game day notes that I got written to from each person in my “family” on our team. A cutout of some of the ratings my coaches gave me that I had hanging up as well as a note that I wrote to remind myself to get better every single day. Everything I had I wanted to keep with me because every single day these things were what kept me going whether it was my teammates and their presence, the kind words other people have used to encourage me, etc. and putting them all together felt right and a good way to capture this year.
The two assignments that I chose to follow and pull inspiration from were formal elements and your art voice. Formal elements came into the piece when I was struggling what to do for my background. I thought to choose a colour that also had something to do with what my piece meant to me and I chose blue because it was the colour for our senior day this year. I used markers, water and a paintbrush to create a little abstract background and then pulled in that complimentary colour of orange and random shapes on the background to add a little flare. The painted portion of my work was the background and making a watercolour essentially as the first step and base layer on my canvas. My art voice I pretty much used other peoples work and writings throughout the collage and so I felt that this was reflective of that assignment because we essentially combined two other peoples works and used them, finding a meaning, aesthetic and concept that fit with what you wanted to do.
