Brooklyn errand girl, Riverside house attendant by day and part time barmaid at Louie’s Pub by night, Annabelle “Luna” Morgan is always on the go. ((Indie RP blog, Newsies OC, multi-fandom; FC: Anne Hathaway This is an indie RP sub account so I'm sorry I can't follow back or send asks.))
In college, I tended to drink Long Islands when I went out, which amazes me in retrospect, considering that now I never leave the house and can’t drink much more than a glass of wine. Truly, the past is a different country; they get drunk differently there.
This drabble is set during the Brooklyn scene when Jack, Boots, and Davey come to visit.
The heat was almost unbearable despite the sun just rising. Sweltering mornings for the Brooklyn newsies were spent cooling off swimming along the docks and that morning in particular was the warmest it has ever been all Summer. Spot Conlon despised the heat, almost as much as snow. He groaned as he made his way over to the docks to join his newsies who decided to take the morning off from selling. The Brooklyn leader got word of Jack Kelly and his Manhattan newsies striking and were on their way to ask for his help. Spot’s mind was already made up. The Manhattan newsies were way in over their heads and it was unlikely he was going to give up his time and his boys to join yet another strike. He would have to let Jack down. It wouldn’t be the first time either but he knew his friend was persistent and he found him amusing at his attempts to humor him.
Climbing up to his perch, Spot took in the view, finding a moment to relax before Jack arrived. He looked down and found one of his newsies, Rails, cursing in pain as he swam his way to climb up from the docks. Spot noticed his friend’s arm was bleeding from what appeared to be a fishing hook stuck to it. He rolled his eyes and called out to his friend, a young lady who was sitting on a crate, writing in a book.
“Luna!” Spot called out. “I think Rails became the catch of the day again. Ya mind shutting him up?”
The girl let out a sigh and blew a few strands of her brown hair away from her face. “I helped him out of a hook last time. It’s your turn.”
Spot crouched down closer to her and explained. “I’m lookin’ out for Jacky-boy right now. He’s gonna be here any time soon and the only way I’m gonna get Rails’ blood on me is if I kill the bum myself. So would ya? Please?”
It was not usual for Spot Conlon to say “please” but Luna knew he would not know the first thing about extracting a hook from something that was not a fish. He often left any medical attention to her especially when it came to his newsies.
Luna rolled her eyes as she closed the book and set it down. She hopped off from the crate and gathered some supplies from her bag. She was known to be prepared with medical supplies while being around Spot and the Brooklyn boys. It was almost a daily routine for her to fix one of them up.
“Lu! A little help please?” Rails clutched his arm, attempting to pick at the hook protruding out of his skin. The boys gathered around him laughed and cringed at the sight.
This was not the first time Luna had to take out a fishing hook out of her friend for he swore he could out swim the other boys even if it meant swimming toward the men fishing at the other side of the docks.
Luna dragged Rails over to a crate and sat him down before she began working on carefully taking the hook out of his arm. She glanced up and saw Jack, Boots, and another boy she did not recognize, walking along the docks toward Spot’s perch.
Rails called out to his friend. “Hey Spot! Jack’s here!”
“Hold still!” Luna growled as she began cleaning the wound and suppressing the bleeding. “Any idea who the new guy is?”
“No idea… Ey! Easy Lu!” Rails flinched and shot her a glare.
Rolling her eyes, she continued to extract the hook out of his arm in a clean sweep. Suddenly, she heard the familiar sound of a glass bottle has been broken. She looked up to see Spot showing off again. She snickered to herself as she noticed the new guy stepped further away. It was certain that was his first time around the Brooklyn boys. She could not help but glance at him a few moments. She noticed his striking blue eyes and his handsome features. She suddenly caught herself staring and unaware of her grip tightening on Rails’ arm. He flinched and glared at his friend. “Hey Lu, would ya pay attention?”
“Sorry!” She tended to his arm and applied a solution to the wound. Overhearing, the new guy speaking up to Spot, she could not help but smirk. This fella surely has no idea who he was talking to. As expected, she found Spot up in his face to call him a “walkin’ mouth”.
“Walkin mouth? You think he could come up with something better than that. Chatter Bum, Blabber Face... okay, I got nothing. ” Luna muttered as Rails held in a chuckle. They listened in on the fella trying to talk Spot into joining the Manhattan boys and Rails had to shake his head.
“There’s no way Spot’s gonna fall for that.”
Taking out a roll of bandages, Luna glanced up at him as she started to unwind it. “Why not? The Manhattan boys are your pals.”
Rails shrugged, trying not to look at his arm. “That’s what we thought when we helped those Bay Ridge boys. Remember that?”
Luna sighed as she began wrapping the bandage around his arm. “Yeah but that was different. Those factory boys were scum to begin with. All they wanted was to use Spot’s connections to the union and as I suspected, the minute some of you boys got stuck in the refuge, they backed out and left you to fix things on your own. But these are newsies, guys like you, finally taking a stand. I thought you boys would be behind that sort of thing.”
Rails shook his head. “Maybe but ya know Spot, he ain’t as trusting anymore.”
Just as Luna was done patching up her friend, she stood up and could not help but overhearing Spot’s challenge. “...You gotta show me.”
She noticed the new boy, David as she heard his name, tried to continue to convince him. It was a hopeless effort and she knew it would take more to convince the leader of Brooklyn to back them up.
She saw Jack rolling his eyes before pulling him back. “It’s alright, Dave. We don’t need them anyway. We’ll handle it on our own. Let’s go.” Jack glared at Spot before he walked away.
“See ya around, Spot.” Boots frowned, hopping off a crate and walked after him. David watched them walk away and glanced back at Spot who went to join his newsies. David let out a heavy sigh of defeat as he followed Jack and Boots to head back to Manhattan.
Rails and Luna watched them leave the docks and saw Spot walking over to them.
“I really think you should help them.” Luna glanced Spot as she rolled up the extra bandages.
Spot narrowed his eyes at her as he glanced at the top of his cane before polishing it. “I don’t remember askin’ for your opinion, Lulu.”
Luna scoffed. “You don’t need to because I’m giving it to you whether you like it or not. And what’s with the new guy? For a minute there I thought you two were going to kiss.” She smirked as Spot shot her a glare. Rails sensed the tension between his friends and immediately walked away to join the fellas.
Luna let out a small sigh and moved closer to Spot so they were face to face. She continued on. “Look, I remembered what happened when you helped the Bay Ridge boys. Jack and his fellas are different. Come on, Spot. You’ve known him for as long as we’ve known each other and he wouldn’t come to you for help if he wasn’t serious about it.”
“It ain’t just Jack.” Spot rolled his eyes. “It’s his boys too. I don’t know them all too well and who knows if they’ll back out when things get complicated? They ain’t knowin’ what they’re gettin’ themselves into.”
“Which is a risk I’m sure they’re willing to take.” Luna stepped closer to him and reached out to touch the key hung around his neck, admiring it. “Manhattan newsies are aware of what you went through especially during the trolley strike. After all, they did help spread the word about it.”
Spot glanced down at her and felt his temper finally subsiding. “Well, my decision still stands. Those boys are on their own.”
Frowning, she stepped back and began packing up the medical supplies. It was no use trying to convince him further. “I’m heading to Manhattan for some errands and I’ll keep an eye out for Jack’s boys. No need to send out any of your birds to spy on them, alright?” She flung her bag of supplies over her shoulder. “You may be underestimating them, Spot. They’ll prove themselves. I’ll see you tonight.”
Spot rolled his eyes. “Yeah, yeah.”
Before she started walking, she paused and turned around. “And Spot?”
He narrowed his eyes at her. “What?”
“That was a nice shot by the way.” She grinned before walking away.

Oh that Rails. Probably involving one of your boys' girls as usual. Whatever happened, serves him right. Just hope he doesn't get himself another death threat. I'm done covering up for him.
