It took a total of five months for Regulus and Barty to figure out Remus once he had caught their eye.
It wasn't advanced arithmancy, but it became abundantly clear to them both that no one else paid enough attention to the lycanthrope.
Having been raised to believe that all werewolves were vicious, disgusting monsters, their first reactions were an inner battle of bigotry.
But, this was Remus Lupin. He was awkward, with long limbs that never quite sat right, and a lopsided smile. They had never seen the bloke raise his voice, let alone attempt to maul somebody.
In fact, the man was docile.
That wouldn't do. It was infurating watching Remus hold himself back out of fear that he'd prove any ridiculous stereotypes about werewolves right.
Regulus and Barty are not just geniuses. They are also massive shit stirrers.
Any opportunity to make his life more difficult, they took. Sneering at him in the corridor, purposely bumping into him, starting arguments for the same of fighting.
Each little slight was a push into the correct direction. Determined to make Remus snap.
I didn't help that Sirius treated Remus like he was a lost puppy that needed protection from the two boys. He was a werewolf for Merlin's sake! The man could handle himself.
Regardless, Barty had hatched a plan, and Regulus was more than happy to participate.
The full moon was in just two days, making it the prime time to finally push Remus past his limit. All they needed to do was get him alone.
Luckily for them, stalking him for months had meant having his schedule memorized.
Barty striked first, cornering Remus in the library just before curfew, almost unable to stay still with how giddy he was.
"I didn't know they allowed pets in the library, Lupin."
Then, Regulus was beside him, having been silently lurking nearby like a little shadow.
"Where's your owner, dog? Did my brother find another mutt to entertain him?"
Remus' chair clattered to the ground with how quickly he stood up, the noise echoing in the otherwise empty library. His hand fisting the collar of Regulus' shirt as he manhandled him, pinning him against the table.
The pure fury that burned in those molten amber eyes was more beautiful than anything either of them had seen. A golden sunset of anger replacing the usually resigned look he had.
"Are you gonna bite him, hm?" Barty mocked, a wicked grin curling at the corners of his mouth. "Go on. Take a bite, dog. Be a good boy and defend yourself." He grabbed a fistful of Regulus' hair and tilted his head back, baring his exposed throat.
Remus didn't hesitate. He sank his teeth into the silky flesh, teeth breaking skin. The taste of blood hitting his taste buds made him moan, his jaw clamping down harder.
It was warm in his mouth. Distracting him from the horror of what he had just done. Regulus was crying from the pain, desperately grinding his hips against Remus while Barty just watched with unbridled joy.
