she’s muttering over a cup of coffee she hasn’t touched save for a few lackadaiscal grazes of fingertips along its dark-coal handle to preserve and mend heat. it’s keeping her distracted, she thinks, while others run amuck to deal with the aftermath of ---- everything. thanos, ashes and dust, people’s disappearances, survivors. she’s fortunate ( or is she? ) enough to stand amongst them, but right now aubrey craves nothing but isolation. she sits and doesn’t drink her coffee, but the steam keeps her at ease. she doesn’t want to recall her teammates’ disintegrating bodies, slipping through her grasp. “more like a buncha’ rag-tags rounded together than covert, stone-fuckin’-cold agents. they -- we were constantly in danger an’ we were fuckin’ rough an’ messy but also close. almost like family, even.” 

she touches the cup again, allows it to get as hot as it was when it first arrived. she peeks a quick glance at the woman next to her and thinks of how she’d typically just freak out over the thought of poising herself within an avenger’s vicinity  --- and it’s carol fucking danvers, she’s been briefed about how crucial she is --- but the current lack of people she desires to share the story with binds her aloof. “coulson, mack, daisy---they were great leaders. are great leaders.” aubrey finally looks up, eyes locked on carol -- the hope in her gaze is almost puerile. there are so many things she wants to ask.
