Apichatpong Weerasethakul:
Tropical Nature + Light Contrast + Infrastructure + Harsh Shadows + Isolated People + Vibrant Colors = A critique of the way that humans and nature interact in both their vibrancy of colors and the impacting relationship that human kind has with natural landscapes.
Personal Formula
My Personal Formula: Snow Coated Nature + Infrastructure + Light Contrast + Soften Shadows + Paired Peoples + Black and White = A blanketed feeling of being unified in an area that has been shaped by nature and mankind but both have an equal weight of being overcome by the weather.

Image 8: Yosemite Tintype
The Last image was created with a gradient filter and photo filter to give the illusion that it was created like a tin type print. A silver gradient was put over the whole picture in place of a black and white filter. After that a curve was applied to the photo creating higher contrast in the photo but still keeping the mid-tone values while pumping up highlights and shadows. For the photo to appear with that tin type look I decided to put an amber looking photo filter with low fill at the end, giving it that varnished look.
Image 7: Yosemite Cloudy Fall
The image to start off with was very flat and I tried to make the image more vibrant but feel like a fall scene. To do this I used a saturation and hue filter over the whole image bringing out the blues in the sky and yellows in the larches. The image then was color graded to make it feel colder while still maintaining the greens and yellows in the trees. Last, a low opacity black and white filter was applied to the clouds in order to give the illusion of a grey and cloudy day in fall.
Image 6: Italy Unrealistic
I played around for a while trying to create a daytime scene with the photo, but after some time I decided to make the lighting very unnatural and other worldly. The sky had a rainbow hued radial gradient filter placed over it to create this psychedelic sunset, and the clouds were tinted using the channel mixer to create an unrealistic sunset. As for the buildings, I wasn’t sure how to color grade them and ended up making them a very dark blue hue to play with the already blue tint they had on them from the image.
Image 5: Italy at Sunset
This photo reminded me of a sunset photo so I decided to put emphasis on the rosy colors seen at a sunset. I color graded this photo and its accompanying one with two separate areas of masks and color grading to each location respectively. The sky was graded to be moderately shifted towards the red, yellow, and magenta parts of the color spectrum. A curve was also applied to the sky bringing out the shadows and highlights while lowering the mid-tones. For the ground area, the Shadows were left slightly blue, and the highlights were moved towards the red, magenta, yellow spectrum to give the illusion light from the sky are slightly rosy.
Image 4: Man with High Contrast Lighting
The posture that the model gives in this image initially struck me as being very threatening. Because of this, I decided to attempt to change the color and contrast within the scene to be more worried and scared. After a curve adjustment layer to enhance the shadows, I layered overtop of the image a blue gradient mask. This was to give it that abandoned building feel. Though it was too overwhelming and much of the detail in the mid-tones were lost after the curve, I finally layered a 40% opacity duplicate of the background image to create more of a dynamic range.
