okay releasing my yaps about jin ling/telemachus (epic the musical) parallels because i got enabled lolll this is a much longer post than i originally anticipated so hence the readmore. if you are familiar with greek mythology/the odyssey in general, you will be familiar with the characters involved even if you don't know the musical version. anyway, songs for reference: legendary / little wolf

legendary is telemachus musing about his father, odysseus, who went to war when telemachus was a baby and has yet to return even after 20 years. people do not know whether odysseus is alive or dead, and they are getting restless in the power vacuum he left behind. odysseus was known before he left as a great warrior and leader, so telemachus dreams of living up to that reputation but also worries that he is too young and weak to stand up to those who wish to challenge telemachus in odysseus' absence.

similarly, jin ling's father was a war hero who was in line to become the next sect leader of the jin clan, but he died when jin ling was a baby. in the time since then, his clan has been led by a man not in the official hereditary line of succession (born out of wedlock), and jin ling has been bullied for being an orphan despite the fact that he is the sect heir. jin ling clearly wants to live up to his father's reputation, and even carries his father's sword as his own, but he is insecure in his fighting abilities and he struggles with not truly knowing anything about his parents besides stories he's been told about them.

TELEMACHUS: it's just me, myself, and i / stuck in my bedroom living in this world you left behind / dreaming of all these monsters that i'll never get to fight / but boy i wish i could so i could bring the world some light / 'cause i'm stuck with your stories / but no clue who you are / somebody tell me, come and give me a sign / if i fight those monsters, is it you i'll find? / i know life and fate are scary, but i wanna be legendary / 108 old faces of men who call me small / they're getting impatient, dangerous too / and i would fight them if i was half as strong as you / somebody help me, come and give me the strength / give me a chance, a single opportunity / and i'll overcome these obstacles and scrutiny

i didn't include all the parts in this song that reference penelope (telemachus' mom) because jin ling's mom is also dead so he doesn't actively think about fighting to protect her (though he does wish he knew her too), but there is a line where telemachus says "don't you dare call my mother a tramp" which is also very jin ling-coded because he does get very defensive and prickly if you insult his parents and he is sensitive about being an orphan.

little wolf is a fight scene between the suitors (mainly antinous with the others cheering him on) and telemachus. it's immediately after legendary, with the "don't you dare call my mother a tramp" portion being the inciting incident for the fight. antinous also further goads telemachus by mentioning how his father hasn't been around to teach him about life or combat. jin ling has been provoked into fights by the other party insulting his parents, mentioning their deaths, or even mentioning their alleged killer. in his introduction scene, he gets mad and impulsively attacks the main character for saying that his mother never taught him manners, as he assumed that the mc knew who he was and was making a purposeful dig at the fact that his mother was dead.

ANTINOUS: you've made your worst mistake here / might be your last one too / you'll have run out of bones to break / when you and i are through / i'll teach you all the lessons / your daddy never could / this cruel world doesn't give out presents / just for being good

the fight begins and it's clearly not an even match. the suitors are older than telemachus, and antinous is stronger than he is with more fighting experience. there's a whole chorus of people jeering and taunting telemachus as he basically gets the crap beat out of him. jin ling also frequently gets into confrontations with other disciples in his clan. they often gang up on him during these altercations, resulting in jin ling getting beaten. despite being the sect heir, they don't respect him and though i don't think they (*specifically the other junior disciples that he so often gets into fights with) are bold/smart enough to actually try to kill him, there are adults in the cultivation world that could and would attempt to assassinate him.

telemachus then gets the benefit of divine intervention from the goddess athena in the middle of the fight. while jin ling never receives the blessing of a god, there is a scene in canon (~chapters 127-128 of manhwa, chapter 47 of novels) where he gets into a fight with a group of his clan members and the main character teaches him a move to take them down one-by-one in the middle of the fight, which he quickly learns to replicate and enact on his own. this is also where it is revealed that he has been told not to fight back in these situations by his paternal half uncle.

ATHENA: need some help? TELEMACHUS: what's going on here? ATHENA: is your plan to stand around? / 'cause i suggest you fight back TELEMACHUS: i don't know how ATHENA: uppercut him, now

athena then describes why she decided to intervene on telemachus' behalf, saying she doesn't respect bullies. anyone who knows the actual source material will know that the main character of mdzs would probably not make the same metaphors to dogs and wolves that she does (he's got a deathly fear of dogs) but the sentiment is largely the same. jin ling eventually does prevail over the others with the move he was taught by the mc, who also encourages him to ignore his uncle's advice and start fighting back more while he still can.

ATHENA: alright now, let's try this again / i've no respect for bullies / those who impose their will / i've seen plenty enough to truly understand this kind of filth / let's teach this dog a lesson / in front of all his kind / one young wolf has a larger heart than all these men combined / fight, little wolf, fight / show them that you've got some / bite, little wolf, bite / take advantage now and / strike, little wolf, strike / don't go down without a / fight, little wolf, fight, little wolf / get up and fight

as a last comment, i also think it's an interesting parallel that athena harbors guilt over not doing more for odysseus (telemachus' father) which contributes partially to why she helps telemachus, and the mc in mdzs also harbors guilt over jin ling's parents' deaths so he wants to do what he can to help jin ling.

btw regarding jin ling's dog, if your character speaks chinese/his native language, i will write her name in english (fairy) since both characters would understand the meaning of her name. if there is a language difference (i.e., the characters are speaking a common language that is not jin ling's native language), i will write her name in non-accented pinyin (xianzi) since that's how your character would hear it.

age: 15 title: first crown prince* jin ling of xing *inherited after his father's death, widely contested

backstory

jin ling's father, jin zixuan, was the first son of the emperor of xing. having the heir-apparent born into their clan, the already wealthy jin clan was cemented as one of the most powerful clans in xing. when he became of age, jin zixuan entered an arranged (but ultimately amicable) marriage with jiang yanli, and subsequently jin ling was born, further solidifying the jin clan's bloodline. however, less than two years after jin ling's birth, both of his parents were assassinated, which sent shockwaves through the political landscape of xing. it became unclear whether jin ling, still a baby at the time, would be granted the succession rights of his father. other clans smelled blood in the water and began currying the emperor for favor.

despite the unrest, madam jin (jin ling's grandmother/jin zixuan's mother) had jin ling raised as the first crown prince with the assumption that he would succeed the throne. he was spoiled by his elders, but not so much by others in his generation. as the emperor's health reached a tipping point, the idea to send jin ling to amestris to retrieve the philosopher's stone and secure their clan's succession once and for all was floated. eager to prove himself and woefully naive, jin ling agreed. however, not was all as it seemed, as unbeknownst to jin ling, with the grief-fueled death of madam jin a few years prior, he had lost his greatest advocate and protector within the clan, and other players began making moves behind the scenes to usurp him. he was sent to amestris via boat (a comfortable but slow journey) while dressed in fine robes and adorned in gold accessories (as a prince should be). despite being spoiled most of his life, no attendants or bodyguards accompanied him, as it was said that he should be able to do this on his own. he has brought his father's sword, a bow, and his trusted guard dog (fairy) with him on the journey for his self defense. while jin ling is away on a wild goose chase in a foreign country, his clan is currently being led by his uncle, jin guangyao, an illegitimate heir that was despised by the late madam jin but has since gained favor with the wider population and used his personability to organize some alliances with other clans.

age: 29 title: fourth crown prince nie huaisang of xing

backstory

the nie clan is one of the most powerful clans in xing, known for their martial prowess and aggressive fighting style. their position in the political sphere was solidified when nie mingjue, the second crown prince of xing, was born into the clan. six years later, nie huaisang was born to a different woman in the nie clan, which was very auspicious for the nies. being the second prince born into the nie clan, nie huaisang was never supposed to truly be considered in the line of succession as his older brother would precede him. thus, he openly neglected his martial studies in favor of more artistic pursuits and generally lived a comfortable and frivolous life.

after the death of jin zixuan, nie mingjue became the apparent next in line to become emperor. the jin clan disputed this, arguing that jin zixuan's son, jin ling, despite being a baby, should inherit his father's title and succession rights. however, nie mingjue was well-liked, had forged strong alliances with other clans, and was highly skilled in combat. if it were to come to a direct contest in the future, most believed that jin ling would not stand a chance against him in a contest of popularity or battle.

two years after jin zixuan's death, nie mingjue also died under mysterious circumstances. it was nearly inconceivable to think he could be bested in a fight, even if taken by surprise, so nobody could explain how it happened. with his death, the nie clan was thrown into disarray. nie huaisang, only 16 at the time, was evidently woefully unprepared to lead or take up the mantle of being the leader of the clan. he became very attached to his brother's friend and ally, lan xichen, the third crown prince, relying on the man for advice and assistance with running his own clan. the alliance with the lan clan remained strong, which is the one thing that huaisang's clan can thank him for, as lan xichen became the emperor's heir apparent following mingjue's death. he also remained close with another of his brother's allies, jin guangyao, who had risen to a prominent position in the jin clan despite not being an official heir, as their only official heir was still a baby.

to the public, nie huaisang has a reputation for being anxious and incompetent, relying heavily on his brother's former allies to keep his clan afloat in the fiercely competitive political landscape. in secret, he has actually been investigating his brother's death and plotting to take down the perpetrator. contrary to his act, he is quite cunning. playing the fool gets him plenty of information. people let their guard down around an idiot, after all. he has no true ambitions for the throne, so he's remained in xing while many of the other lower-order heirs are going to the neighboring country of amestris to chase a myth in order to curry favor with the dying emperor.

frieren + verse: wha

age: 1000+ species: elf rank: not officially ranked (has not done any tests), but an extremely capable witch nonetheless apprentice: fern (human)

centuries ago, frieren was the apprentice of the legendary witch, flamme, famed for her prolific contributions to the magical world. now, she is a traveling witch, though most do not know she is a witch at first because she rarely wears their signature pointed hat and she keeps the full extent of her magical prowess hidden most of the time. she will wear the pointed hat is when she goes to witch-specific gatherings or spaces, as she has learned that it is a signal the human witches currently use to designate that they practice magic. the customs change so frequently (in her opinion) that she doesn't usually stay on top of maintaining the most current registration/testing requirements for herself, though she does try to attend events like silver eve to learn about new spells.

she also has an (unofficial) apprentice, fern, who is generally more aware of the customs of the pointed hat witches and wears her pointed hat as expected. fern is an adult and has already passed all four tests, but she still considers herself frieren's apprentice (despite the fact that frieren has not taken the proper tests to even officially take on apprentices, technically), as frieren has much to teach her yet. frieren often allows her to handle any requests for magical assistance on their travels, both as a practical training exercise to improve fern's skills and because frieren herself is not officially recognized in the same way that fern is. that being said, she will step in if she believes fern cannot handle the situation.

being from before the day of the pact, frieren knows magic that is now considered 'forbidden'. she is no great healer, as that type of magic was not her strength even back in the days it was allowed, but she does know some things. she generally complies with the current rules if she knows them, but she also would not be morally opposed to using 'forbidden' spells if she deemed it necessary to do so, as she doesn't feel particularly beholden to the rules that the humans have currently established given how those rules have a tendency to change drastically throughout the years.

i always think about how ranpo just wanted to be understood his whole life. no one had come close, and even though ranpo loves the many people in his life he still found something missing, a hollow in his chest.

but when everything changes it shakes ranpo’s whole being, as poe sweeps into his life with keen intellect that almost rivals his. maybe ranpo will finally be understood, and accepted as he yearns?
