it’d been a long while since bucky’s been in the dating scene.

at a whopping age 110 years old, he’d only had a few flings under his belt, all back when he was still with steve in the ‘40’s. months long relationships from almost a century ago didn’t quite help him now. times have changed, and so has he. and, as much as that bothered him, he set those feelings aside. he had a lot of other things that he needed to deal with.

bucky found that this came to a halting stop the moment you’d stumbled your way into his life. it was an accident, just as it was for the rest of the new avengers. you were simply at the wrong place at the most unfortunate time. so, while everyone had scolded themselves for winding up in this mess valentina had brought onto them, he had found himself in another predicament.

you were kind, a genuine sort of person he didn’t come across often. you had your baggage, all sorts of stuff you beared on your shoulders, and still you found it in yourself to be positive. not in a cheerful, tooth-rotting kind of positivity. it was a sincere positivity, a sweetness that truly came from your soul. don’t get it twisted: you knew how to be short and snappy, to get your point across when you needed to. that’s what bucky grew quick to admire about you.

and, at first, he thought it was a friendly sort of admiration. he’d admired steve for his stubbornness and loyalty, sam for his courage and determination. so, bucky assumed he’d simply admired you like that. as a friend. he’d tried to date since he’d gotten his life back, and all had fell short. it was the last thing he had on his mind. clearly, he couldn’t hold himself to that forever.

early one morning, with the scent of pancakes and bacon guiding him, bucky walked into the large kitchen of the rebuilt tower. he felt his stomach beginning to grumble at the delicious smell. he found the rest of the team already there, stacking their plates full with freshly made food. he greeted walker a good morning, moving past him to fix himself his own plate. pancakes weren’t his thing, though he would never pass up food that looked this good.

bucky was grateful to find an empty seat next to you. you looked so pretty sitting there, legs crossed, baggy pajamas drooping over your body. he sat down carefully beside you, watching the way your eyes drifted up to meet his. that’s when bucky’s eyes lingered down to your lips. your tongue swiped against your plush lower lip, gathering up a dribble of syrup quickly, offering him a kind, closed lipped smile after. he lingered on the sight for what felt like way too long, despite only being a handful of seconds. you didn’t even notice.

“g’morning,” you greeted, eyes bright as you spoke to him. bucky’s eyes finally found their way to yours, lips upturning into a small smile. you reached over wordlessly to the syrup bottle, gently handing it to the man. when bucky lifted an arm to retrieve it from your grasp, his warm fingers brushed against yours for a split second, touch that had his body buzzing slightly.

“morning,” he responded, carefully putting a little syrup on his pancakes. in a quick and briefly successful attempt to distract himself, bucky filled the quiet air between the two of you. “these look really good, who made them?”

“i did!” you told him, shoulders straightening up slightly at the compliment, giving him another soft smile. while the compliment was unintentional, it seemed to land well with you. he doubled down on them looking good, even giving an appreciative nod your way when he finally tried a piece. you seemed very content with this.

that brief sense of relief bucky felt washed away, his eyes traveling back to your lips again. he tried shaking the feeling, ridding his mind of the thought of his lips against yours, of how nice he thought you looked, even if you were sleepy. he shook his head slightly, palm reaching to press against one of his eyes in annoyance with himself.

this was the first time bucky’s mind had drifted like that with you. it was odd. he wondered if it was just a one time thing, his brain catching up with him from the lack of romantic connection he’d been getting. it’s what he forced himself to believe this morning. he didn’t want to dwell on it for too long.

formal gatherings

despite being a former congressman, going through all of the rather shitty pr practice and public appearances, bucky struggled keeping up with those sort of events. he knew he had to keep his public appearance up, especially with his not-so-good past. that didn’t make this any less painful for him to endure.

valentina insisted on hosting a formal event highlighting the success the new avengers had found in the past couple of months. it wasn’t much, and a lot of it was fabricated, though that didn’t stop her from trying. it frustrated bucky beyond belief to continue on with this. one of the only reasons he continued on was you. and man, did you make it easy to follow along with.

with a new, tailored suit on, bucky found his way to the meeting room a few floors down. suits and uniforms were something he was used to by now. even before his time with hydra, he liked looking nice, making himself look put together. if it were under any other circumstances than right now, he wouldn’t be so tense. it was unfortunate, really.

one unfortunate thing flipped to another the moment bucky layed eyes on you.

even with your back to him, he knew it was you. your hair was done up nice just enough to show off the large dip in your dress, your shoulder blades and your lower back on full display. it was a deep black dress, tight and hugging all the right parts of your body. he had to pry his eyes away from your body the moment you noticed his footsteps behind you.

shifting your body slightly, you turned your head to peer over your shoulder, eyesight catching bucky walking in. you were quick to greet him and give him a wave. the front of your dress was much like the back: a plunging neckline, a small slit running up one of your thighs. it was formal, though a bit revealing. his jaw tensed up slightly at the sight of you, forcing a small smile to his face as he waves back.

this wasn’t the first time bucky’s seen you in something a little revealing, and it certainly wasn’t the first time he’d seen you in a dress. valentina had the group wrapped in public appearances often, which usually meant wearing nice clothing. it was different this time, though. his eyes wandered down to your lips again briefly, glossy and perfect in a smile, an action he thought was just a one time thing. he subconsciously licked his own lips at the sight, deep in thought as he attempts to compose himself. you caught on to his staring this time, only a second before he pried his eyes away from your mouth.

“you look nice,” you complimented genuinely, suddenly becoming aware of how you look yourself. you pressed your lips together in attempts to feel around, wondering if you’d gotten something stuck there you weren’t meant to have. all you felt was the shimmering smooth gloss.

“so do you,” bucky nodded, hands finding their way behind his back, clasping together in a tense hold. he made it a point to look you in your eyes, kicking himself for staring so disrespectfully, even if you’d only noticed his stare at your lips. “you look beautiful.”

you forced yourself to keep your shoulders straight at his words, trying your best not to fold in on yourself. part of you thought that, maybe, bucky was flirting with you. part of you also believed he was only being nice, returning the sentiment you’d given him. regardless, it had you giddy, and maybe even a little hopeful. you whispered a small thank you, forcing yourself not to smile too wide at his words. you didn’t want him knowing you were holding onto it for dear life.

he did notice, just a little. he saw the way your nose scrunched up under his stare, a nervous tick you had. he noticed how your eyes flickered away from him, scanning the room in hopes to calm yourself down. that’s when bucky’s eyes trailed down to your lips for one last look. the urge to kiss you was back and stronger than before. turns out, this might not be something he could shove down and ignore.

wounds

it wasn’t uncommon for injuries to occur during missions. that, however, didn’t stop you from worrying.

you noticed the stab wound on bucky’s side quickly when you finally arrived back to the tower. he had a large, firm hand on his side, walking his way into the elevator. you were swift with the way you followed him inside, slipping in after him, a slight limp on your walk. he noticed quickly how you were staring at him - eyebrows stitched together, a small frown on your face, eyes slipping down to his wound-, and there was no denying he was injured.

“does it hurt?” you asked him, pressing the button to the living quarters. he shook his head at your words, leaning back against the wall casually, hand still pressed against his side.

“barely feel it,” he reassured, though he knew you weren’t gonna let up. “it’s just bleeding a bit. i don’t even think it’s deep enough to need stitches.”

you still frowned, hearing the ding of the elevator, watching the doors slide open. he was the first to exit the elevator, and you were quick to follow, stumbling your way down towards your rooms. you had no intentions, however, of retreating to your own.

“can i take a look at it? just in case,” you questioned, following him around like a lost puppy. the worry you had for him ran deep, and it was for good reason.

the two of you got along well. you made good conversation, amusing him when things got a little extra tense around the building and the team. you indulged in his enthusiasm surrounding books he was reading, ones he was still catching himself up on from the years he’d lost. in turn, bucky let you rave about the music you were into. he even took a listen to some of your favorite artists, all current tunes to him, even if it was from three decade ago. it was nice having you around to accompany him.

you cared for each other, yearned for each other, though nobody said a word about it. it seemed that the two of you were a little too stubborn, too caught up in your heads to admit anything. bucky was still grappling with the idea of dating again, the thought of him actually falling for someone making him nervous. especially now that he’s realized that someone’s you. you, however, were simply a little intimidated by him. you weren’t quite sure if he felt the same way, and you felt you were possibly in a little too deep feeling this way about him.

“if i say yes, will it help you stop worrying so much?” bucky asked, finally finding his way to his room. he looked at you expectantly, free hand not touching the doorknob just yet.

“absolutely,” you nodded. you had much experience with cleaning and patching up wounds. you had the skills to properly make sure he was truly okay. that’s when he gave in, nodding along with you as he opens up the door to his bedroom.

his bedroom was tidy, however a little disorganized. his bed was made, though his dirty clothes basket were overflowing. he had knickknacks sat a little scattered across his dresser and nightstand, books and cds he’s acquired through the years. there was even a picture of him and sam on his nightstand, which you found adorable. you followed bucky into his bathroom without a second thought on the matter.

you froze the moment you watched him begin to tug off the top of his tactical gear, tight and sweaty and bloodied. it took him a second to peel everything off, the only thing he kept on was a black muscle tee. he began rummaging through his medical supply, laying it all out onto the sink for you. that’s when you began swatting him away.

“i’ve got it, i’ve got it,” you told him, feeling his pointed glare at you. you ignored it as you grabbed ahold of a wash cloth. while you let the water run warm, you began speaking again in regards to his wound. “lemme see.”

bucky tugged up his shirt, peeling it away from the open wound, the ridges of his abs defined behind sweat and blood. you had to tear your sight away from it to look at the damage, reaching over blindly to dampen the soft cloth. once wet, you rung it out, watching the way bucky leaned up against the sink. you moved in front of him then, gentle with your next moves.

you began wiping him clean of the blood that’d seeped out of him, though the wound seemed to stop for the most part. your eyes searched up to his, your free hand hovering over his stomach. bucky gave you a nod, granting you permission to touch him further. your hand rested against his skin as you worked to clean him carefully, steadying yourself against him. you could feel the way he tensed up under your touch, the sting of the cloth and your warm fingers causing a weird mix of sensations.

and, even though you told him you only wanted to take a look, you went ahead and bandaged him up anyways. bucky tried to lightly argue it, to push back and insist he could do it himself, cause he could. that didn’t mean you couldn’t finish up the job for him anyways.

“it’s okay to let someone help you, ya know,” is all you told him, gauze pressing against his wound as you began taping it down.

he didn’t say a word after that, he couldn’t. all of his thoughts stopped for a moment, the air falling quiet and unmoving. his eyes fell to your face rather than your hands as you worked, admiring how focused you looked, how careful you were being. he was far from used to this tenderness, and even more from being cared for and taken care of. despite feeling a little uncomfortable in himself - though not at you, not at all uncomfortable by your actions -, not knowing how to receive this properly, he let you. bucky gave himself up to you, letting himself fall into your soft hands just for the time being.

when you finished, taking ahold of his shirt and smoothing it back down his body, your eyes drifted up to his. bucky’s stare was intense, unwavering, conflicted. you were so close to him, hand still on his stomach, thick air hanging between the two of you. there was that urge again. lingering, persistent, agonizing. you felt it too.

shifting a little on your feet, you leaned in closer to him, face inching towards bucky’s as you studied his reaction. your eyes flickered down to his lips, and right as you thought that this was it, that your lips were going to lock, he shook his head slowly. your eyes were quick to widen, hand flying away from his body suddenly. you were utterly mortified, a rush of humiliation washing over your body. you’d misread the situation, seemingly pushing yourself in somewhere that was unwanted.

“i’m sorry,” you croaked out quietly, taking a few slow steps back. you didn’t want him to feel bad for saying no, it’s okay that he didn’t want this. that didn’t stop your heart from sinking to a large, empty pit in your stomach. though you hadn’t kissed, you felt bad for even trying. for cornering him like that. “i shouldn’t have. i guess i just misread it.”

bucky shook his head again, pushing himself off the sink, ignoring the slight jolt of pain down his side as he inched closer to you again. his hand searched for yours, large and warm and patient. you were preparing yourself for a let down, one you were sure he’d be gentle about. he didn’t look mad at you or upset, oddly enough. even if it was silly to think he would, you were still worried.

“you didn’t do anything wrong. you didn’t misread it,” bucky told you softly. that caught you by surprise, your lips parting slightly, hand tightening around his a little. before you could ask what he meant, he continued. “i don’t want to kiss you, not yet. not like this. not until we’ve had our first date.”

you were quick to nod at his words, body beginning to loosen up. his hand was there to comfort you, to reassure you that you hadn’t crossed the line. his boundary was respectable, a sentiment you’d never been given before. its something you never thought twice about. this was sweet.

home-cooked meals

it was a simple first date. the rest of the team were out on a mission, or attending to more meetings valentina had insisted on. you’d somehow managed to weasel your way out of it all, leaving the living quarters of the tower to you and bucky. just the two of you, uninterrupted. he’d insisted on a night in, the rainy weather outside solidifying his choice.

you two stumbled around each other, making a nice dinner side by side. it was full of giggles, small mess-ups, sarcastic jokes tossed to one another. you worried that things would be different, that your dynamic would shift now that you were pursuing this romantically. and it did, of course it did. just not in the bad way. now, you two didn’t have to hide the obvious lovesick stares, ogling each other out in the open without judgment or fear of rejection. the compliments and the words of affirmation flowed a little more freely than before, more casual and more meaningful, dropped here and there between banter.

“you’re lucky you’re so pretty,” bucky told you with a smile, his hands fumbling with a rag to clean up the water you’d accidentally spilled.

“well if i knew i was getting that kind of treatment i wouldn’t have apologized,” you giggled, nudging his arm gently. that was new, too, the touching. it blossomed two nights before this when you helped clean up his wound.

and, despite how large the dining table is, the two of you sat beside each other, just as usual. you spoke between bites of delicious, successfully made dinner. he drank wine with you, too, even though it had very little effect on him. it was nice having this time with him, finally having your feelings out on the open, not worrying about hiding it. it was nerve-racking, sure, but it was nice.

bucky still worried about getting things right with you. it felt right being with you, enjoying your company, admiring you. you eased a part of him he didn’t know could be helped. he was scared to lose that, to mess it up and watch you walk away. that’s something he kept in, though, secluded in his mind for now. sure, somewhere down the line he may voice that. but now, while he’s trying to fully win you over, to make sure he’s yours, he was going to do things right. to wiggle his way in in whatever way he knew how, to make it official.

after you’d finished eating, your conversation dying down, you put your attention to the dishes. you’d gathered the plates first and foremost, walking them over to the pile of dishes you’d used to make the meal. the clinking of your wine glasses echoed quietly behind you as bucky followed your lead. he sat them beside the sink before he turned his attention to you. with hesitation, he pressed his metal hand to your lower back to grab your attention.

“don’t worry about the dishes, i’ve got it,” bucky told you firmly, watching as your eyes drag up to his. your shook your head at him, heat creeping up your neck at his touch, turning to face him. he kept his hand on your back, gentle and steady.

“i helped with the mess,” you insisted, eyes furrowing together. you were close to him again, achingly close. you pushed those thoughts aside long enough to finish this conversation. “so i’ll help clean it.”

bucky’s other hand found its way up to your head, fingers brushing your hair out of your face. in the process, you’d found yourself shifting closer to him, your hand finding its way to the hem of his shirt. you fiddled with the fabric, staring up at him as you looked you in your eyes. “how about you sit here and look pretty for me instead? talk my ear off, give me some company.”

you thought for a few moments, a small pout playing on your lips, frowning slightly. your eyelashes fluttered up at him, your hand smoothing up to his chest and resting there. you could feel his heartbeat, a little quick and unsteady, something that had you fighting back a smile. instead, you continued to play up your pouting.

“under one condition,” you told him, his hand now cradling your cheek gently. leaning into his touch, you gave him your ultimatum. “you give me that kiss i’ve been waiting for.”

bucky’s lips quirked up into a smile, his eyes rolling slightly at your words. he pushed past every ounce of hesitation, insecurity, and second thought as he leans forward. your eyes close at the same time, just moments before your lips finally meet in the most perfect kiss. his soft, pink lips slotted between yours, pressing gently against yours. his careful hold on you kept you there close to his body, unmoving for the time being. the kiss was exactly how he’d pictured it many times before. soft, caring, full of adoration. it was like he was meant to be right here, right now with you, lips pressed together in a genuine kiss.

this was something bucky didn’t have in his life for so long, and he was so grateful he had it now with you.
