Waiting for my flight out of Midway, I was in a decent spot for capturing takeoffs, even if the sky was meh. I held a little impromptu workshop for a few photo hobbyists who said it was impossible to photograph planes taking off without being a professional with expensive gear. I make money from my photography, but I am not a professional. If my level of involvement must be described, just say that I'm an enthusiast. I winged this shot (no pun) with a D300 and Tamron 18-270mm lens. The issue beginners have with variable aperture lenses is that the f-stop increases as the zoom is extended, which reduces light resulting in a darker final image. I set the aperture to f/6.3 so it would not change regardless of zoom, which was ultimately 46mm. Shutter speed was 1/400 and ISO was 400. I framed the shot to have good size and detail of the plane while keeping enough space around it to make two crops, positioning the plane to the left and to the right of the frame. I had the others try these settings and approach with their respective #Nikon D3000 series and #Canon T series cameras. Their reactions were priceless and further affirmed that, really, about the only times I can comfortably interact with people is when photography is involved. I'm cool with that. . . #southwestairlines #midwayairport #amateurphotography #cloudysky (at Chicago Midway International Airport) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAGD1tgHy_B/?igshid=1jellogbwy0nf
