My PIN number to this day is my second grade best friends birthday. There are people I donāt talk to anymore whose families are still in my prayers. There are shirts I wear to bed from exes of 8 years ago who are married now with kids. And I havenāt found a macaroni salad recipe better than my college boyfriendās momsā. Our lives are made up of so many people and when people become parts of our lives, some parts remain long after they leave. And in the same exact way, itās comforting to know there are so many lives youāre still a part of that you have no idea about.

SCAM ALERT!! Told Magazine Inc / New Media International are scams targeting vulnerable creatives.Ā
They lure you in with a very professionally worded email promising an interview with their magazine, saying you were nominated for it by one of your followers. Their website is also very professional on the surface, but if you look closely youāll notice weird things about it. Lots of photoshopped stock photos of models wearing their logo, no real content or articles, blurry images of text where articles might be.
If you say yes, they send you a link to a questionnaire where they get your personal information, along with some questions about your art peppered in. Then theyāll ask you for money so they can mail you a copy of the magazine with your interview when itās out, and thatās where the biggest part of the scam is. Once you send them money, they disappear.
I made it to the interview phase before going NAH, (I asked them a ton of questions about where the heck their articles were and why their magazine didnāt appear in any Google searches - they ignored me and just sent their next copy/paste email in the scam - a real editor wouldāve addressed my questions). Then I found more artists talking about this scam on Twitter, but I havenāt seen anything about it on Tumblr. So, here you go.
Thereās a lot of scams aimed at creatives right now because many us are more vulnerable than ever. Of course Iād love a sweet interview to boost my online shop sales while my entire convention schedule is canceled. But we can outsmart them by doing research, asking questions, and warning others.

Bumping this because the Told Magazine Inc scam has been sending lots of emails to artists again this week. Watch out for them, and ignore or block their emails if you get one.
UPDATE: SoĀ āTold Magazine Incā emailed me today with this threat, all because of this tumblr post.Ā
Iām not sure how seriously I should take it, since itās a bunch of very harsh emotional threats and doesnāt come off as very⦠professional? On one hand, Iām still 100% convinced Told Magazine Inc is a scam organization, (as of today, googling them still doesnāt bring up anything unless you do so in quotes, their website doesnāt even load, and the third hit is my tumblr so lol). On the other hand, if theyāre horrible enough to try to scam small artists out of some money, then theyāre horrible enough to try to sue a small artist for exposing them as a scam. I wonāt be removing this post as of yet, and will be reaching out to several local lawyers for consultations on the matter.
EDIT: At the suggestion of another tumblr user, Iāve reported Told Magazine Inc to the US Federal Trade Commission for attempting to scam small indie artists. I donāt think anything will come of it, but Iām glad something is officially in their records now! Since Iām not confrontational, Iām just going to ignore TMIās fake C&D and collect any other emails they send in the future as potential evidence against them.
EDIT 2: Well⦠itās been 24 hours. :)
Hopefully the last time I update this, but you know what would make Told Magazine Inc really mad? If you filled out a Scam Alert review here:Ā https://www.scamadviser.com/check-website/toldmagazine.com
Apparently they used to be High Alliance Magazine. After some digging, I can tell most of the images up on their website, (now changed to toldmagazine.com and working again) come from renamed covers andĀ āarticlesā from High Alliance Magazine, another scam doing the exact same thing Told Magazine Inc is doing. The ātop storiesā page on their website is a parade of Instagram models they successfully scammed when they were High Alliance. Also this 5 star review for High Alliance on Scam Alert looks oddly familiarā¦
I bet they would also hate it if you reported High Allianceās Instagram page for being a scam underĀ āā¦ā > report user > itās inappropriate > report account > posting content that shouldnāt be on instagram > scam or fraud.Ā https://www.instagram.com/highalliancemagazine/?hl=en
Anyway, again, hopefully this is the last update. I want to thank everyone who reassured me that their angry C&D email was indeed just a very miserable person blowing hot air. Iām still not going to respond since they arenāt worth the time, and have now set up filters to delete all future messages from [email protected] and [email protected]. Thanks again, and keep spreading the word and watching out for your fellow creatives. Theyāll likely change the name of their scam again soon.
Re-blogging another artist/creator who received the scam emailĀ I got under another magazine name. Itās a whole huge thing!
