You, a dorkus malorcus: “why does Lee even draw Magneto hot? He’s supposed to be hella old, dude remembers WW2”
Me, genius: “he was turned back into a baby in the 1970s, he’s not old in the 90s! he just has white hair. Checkmate, atheist!”
(Uncanny X-Men #275, Jim Lee)
Sometimes being a Magneto fan is weird. People will be trashing him for the sin of being old and then someone will pipe up with some shit like "Well I hate him being with Rogue, he's too old, but I guess it's okay in the versions where he's been de-aged since the age gap's not as bad" and I'm just stood there like ".........okay, but you know that's not how this works, right? Like I feel like I'm shooting myself in the foot here, but you know that's not how that works...? Right?"
[conversationally] with the state the economy is in, it's hard to afford restraints these days, let alone someone to tie you down with them. i'm basically having to restrain myself all the time now.

“we need to stop the stigma towards drug users and addicts” and “we need to challenge the idea that being sober makes you boring” and “we need to stop acting like binge drinking to the extent you’re doing medical damage is fun and normal for young people” are all ideas that can and should coexist.
just so we’re clear, the threshold for “binge drinking to the extent you’re doing medical damage” is waaaay lower than you think.
I work in an obstetrician and gynaecologist’s office. we have to tell patients on a regular basis that they are binge drinking weekly when they think they are simply consuming a normal amount of alcohol on the weekends.
having more than 3 drinks in a single sitting if you have an estrogen based endocrine system is a binge that is medically significant.
having more than 5 in a sitting is a medically significant binge for someone with a testosterone based endocrine system.
every time you do this, it significantly impacts your risk of getting breast cancer, and damages your liver. it takes time to recover from that liver damage. if you’re having a 3-5 or more drink binge on a weekly basis, you are an alcoholic, medically speaking, and your liver is not recovering.
again: the bar for what binge drinking is, medically, is so much lower than what you think it is.
alcohol is a really toxic substance and not something you should fuck around with.
again: if you have an estrogenized hormone system (common for most women), then 3 drinks is a binge. if you have a testosteronized hormone system (common for most men), then 5 drinks is a binge.
anything above that number, consumed as frequently as weekly or more, and you’re medically a binge drinking alcoholic.
also, if you’re drinking any quantity of alcohol 6 days a week or more, that’s another threshold at which, medically speaking, you meet the definition of alcoholism. your liver needs more days without alcohol in your system than just one a week to recover and be healthy.
I don’t say any of this to shame anyone—to me, alcoholism or substance use disorders aren’t a sign of weakness or moral failing. and most of us genuinely don’t know this stuff.
rather—I point this out because it’s important to reduce harm, and find ways to live healthier, happier lives. there is a life outside of constant binge drinking. it’s not always easy to find it. but it’s out there. you deserve a life where your emotional needs are met by something other than alcohol, and a life in which your liver is healthy, and the ways you cope and celebrate and find joy don’t put you at increased risk of cancer.
also–even if alcohol is the only way you can self-medicate, or if you choose to go on with your alcohol usage anyway regardless of other options–you still deserve to know what it’s doing to your body.
information is key. you don’t have to stop drinking, but the utter lack of education on alcohol + the normalization of binge drinking in current society leads to many people drinking without any idea of what it’s doing to their bodies.
addicts deserve accurate medical information regardless of what they decide to do with it. for some people, losing liver function is worth the benefits they get from binge drinking, but they can’t make that choice if they don’t know what the consequences are to begin with.
addicts deserve accurate medical information regardless of what they decide to do with it.
Can someone tell me the definition of one drink in this context?
Because a vodka shot is not the same as (idk, some low alcohol percentage alcohol.)
So, what does 3 (or 5) drinks mean.
0.6 ounces of alcohol is a standard drink. Examples include 12 ounces of 5% alcohol beer, or 1.5 ounces of 40% alcohol liquor.
are we confident it’s a hormone- related thing and not a size issue where in someone who is a larger overall body is going to have an easier time than someone with a smaller overall body?
do we have evidence of this being hormone related? Like in trans individuals or maybe people with PCOS or intersex people or is this purely body size?
Are you saying hormone-related but we just have evidence of, say, cisgender men being able to drink more than cisgender women? Do we even have evidence for this or is this just generic medical recommendations? What’s the science actually saying here?
I was going to ask. This sounds like the kind of thing that was devised a little (not totally) disingenuously in the sense that sexism absolutely played a role, and then it got perpetuated without much further investigation.
I would like to be wrong but this sounds like a thing where “hormones” are a stand in for “sex at birth” and where the real issue lies is in body size and composition. Estrogen OS = overall shorter with more fat. Testosterone OS = overall taller with more muscle. Fat/muscle affects how things are broken down and used, and how much of those things someone needs. Meds, alcohol, food.
Not trying to be an asshole, fully believe that there are variations in how much people can tolerate and that body size and composition do tend to align with how the medical industry sorts people into two sexes. Just…I don’t trust research to look that deeply into things like this, once they start getting quoted.
Also just a smidge of “LADIES are delicate and too much of the demon rum will overwhelm their uteruses and they will swoon.” The way women are told they should eat less than a man their height and weight just because they are women, and women should eat less (delicate flowers, must not be seen to swallow meals like a snake, must not be allowed to get fat). No. You are feeding a body. If you aren’t feeding muscle, you are telling it to store fat.
This just sounds like science that is broadly right, for really stupid reasons.
(1500 calories is used as a starvation tactic in Guantanamo, btw, and it’s damaging physically and psychologically. Don’t do it to yourself.)
I am not at my sharpest rn, probably about an hour away from developing a migraine so forgive me, but I was curious about this, too. A quick Google seems to suggest that alcohol can fuck with both the way your liver metabolizes and regulates estrogen in the body, with alcohol metabolization being prioritized over estrogen. It can also raise levels of aromatase, which causes androgen to convert to estrogen. So there's maybe part of it, at least.
Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) has a multifaceted development, progressing from alcoholic steatosis to alcoholic hepatitis and ultimately to

Something that I don't miss from the older days of fandom was the frequent, encouraged internalized misogyny in fanworks. There used to be a certain kind of commonly found trope in fic where if someone wanted to write a m/m ship involving a character that had an established woman love interest, they'd either a) write the woman in their fic as a wildly ooc, comically evil, brake-cutting, psychopathic harpy out to ruin her male love interest's life and/or his purer, healthy relationship with the other male character in the ship and/or b) include a completely unnecessary moment wherein one or both male characters muse within their inner monologue about how, actually, deeply unfulfilled and disconnected they've always felt in their relationships with women, and perhaps that was just maybe because women were ever so slightly all petty, shallow bitches, inferior in every way to men. Anyway, that all said, I do love when fandom runs up against characters that are canonically established as not only loving women, but as being such absolute, irrefutable sluts for women that they just can't feasibly manage that and appreciate the character at the same time and have to either handwave the character's sexuality entirely, or just make them bi. For example: I think I have seen maybe one and a half fics my entire fandom lifetime that tried the aforementioned shit with Gambit. 99% of his slash-loving fandom looks at him and mentally adds "bi" to his manwhore description and just rolls with it as god intended.

Post x-men 97 season whatever
Rogue: I got fired from the team because I picked you.
Erik: Shame. Guess we'll start our own team. Come on Gambit.
Meanwhile Remy is tied up and gagged so he can't escape.
Rogue: How are you more concerned about his safety.
Erik: He's never leaving our sight again!
Remy: 😡
Erik: Shhhhh you're safe now. We will protect you mon ami
I think of Erik saying "mon ami" and can only think of that post about him picking up "ain't" from Rogue and breaking Charles's brain 😂
Also a big hearty middle finger to all the haters since it looks like Rogue and Erik are still on the same team in the new '97 promos, even if I do hate Erik's mustache

“You write the beginning and then you go back and rewrite the beginning, and you never got off page one. It’s kind of a syndrome, and I have a rash piece of advice which is — Go on, page two, page three, and never look back. Get something finished, no matter how lousy it is. […] Perfectionists cannot get going unless they kind of do violence to their own instincts, and just blast ahead.”
— Ursula K. Le Guin, The Last Interview and Other Conversations
One of the most tiring experiences when you have OCD is when something goes wrong and you're trying very hard to stay calm, and not let the trigger take hold and ruin everything, to just manage it and other people just. Will. Not. Let you.
It feels like you're in some kind of blockbuster action movie, very delicately trying to defuse the bomb that's going to take out the world leader du jour and you've been shot in the leg and you're very very carefully reaching towards the red wire with your little clipper tool and someone that's not even supposed to be in shot comes up and starts slapping your hands away yelling "cAN't You JuSt, CAn't YOu JuSt - " and you're white-knuckling your fraying sanity and trying to politely tell them to just give you a minute but "I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS YOU NEED TO GET OVER IT, i REALLY THINK IF YOU WANTED TO YOU'D JUST TRY -"
*BOOM*
Y'know how there are things in nature about whose existence your ability to be chill with exists very much on a sliding scale of size? Because we are having some kind of seasonal earwig invasion at the house I'm living in, and what I'm saying is that it turns out that earwigs can get a lot bigger than I thought they could, and in the last week or so I have been exposed to an end of that size range that I could have very much gone my whole life without ever knowing about.

I keep looking at the Krakoa books and thinking maybe I should give them a shot, but. Ehn. I feel like looking at them is like looking at a big, beautifully decorated, expensive cake that everyone around you is gushing over, but it's in a flavor that you've just never much cared for. I really am trying to move away from coming to conclusions about media before I've actually seen/read it, but I can't engage with everything, and a lot of what I do see about it reminds me strongly of an article I read discussing why the ending of Game of Thrones felt so unnatural to so many fans. The article just looked at how some writers will write from a character informed approach, while others may use a method wherein they decide at some point how they want things to end and then write the story in that direction. Krakoa feels very much like the second method to me, which is personally not my beautiful cake, plus a lot of the character writing seems to have been all over the place. Anyway. Dark X-Men is up next on the list, mostly for the hope of a decent supporting role portrayal of Gambit. I know Magneto gets a lot of cool focus during Krakoa, so maybe I'll get to more of it someday.
Judith Butler, philosopher: ‘If you sacrifice a minority like trans people, you are operating within a fascist logic’
Feels like a good time to remind certain people that this is coming from Judith Butler, who is not just a leading feminist philosopher, but also THE COFOUNDER OF QUEER THEORY
The literal cofounder of queer theory as an academic field says that abandoning trans people is fascist logic.
The voices in our community trying to exclude us may be loud, but they are not right, and they do not speak for the community as a whole or our history or anything at all.
Trans people belong here. We always have, and we always will.
