Day 2 : Greater Chestnut Weevil (Curculio caryatrypes)
This silly guy is a member of the weevil family. Chestnut weevils, like acorn weevils, get their food from using their snout to bore through chestnuts and leave eggs inside or to feed on the inside. When the eggs hatch they get plenty of food to grow!
The reason I chose this special little guy this week is because the University of Michigan has just recently rediscovered them! They were pronounced extinct almost 30 years ago dye to the loss of the American Chestnut tree.
Day 1 : Pyrops candelaria
These little guys are native to countries like Vietnam and Thailand, and feed off of tree sap by drilling their proboscis into it. Just like their cousins, the lantern fly, the plants effected usually end up dying. They were discovered in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus, but the species "pyrops" were recognized in 1839.
INTRO POST!
This blog is dedicated to showcasing 1 cool bug a week, every friday! Posting times will vary :P
Each post will have the bugs scientific name (and common name if there is one) and some info on the bug! Suggestions can be sent to my ask box with either a picture of the bug or a description (just wanna make sure I get the right one :3) random bugposting will be normal, but you can find bug of the week by searching my tag (bug of the week) on my blog!
